{ to,26?5 THE ORGAN WORKS OF HEALEY WILLAN THESIS Presented to the Graduate Council of the North Texas State College in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements For the Degree of Master of Music By Robert L. Massingham, B. S., M. S. Denton, Texas August, 1957 PREFACE LHealey Willan occupies an unique position in Canadian Music and can be considered as that nation's "elder musical statesman." At the time of writing he is a septuagenarian and still very much active in his profession. Born and trained in England, he was well-established there when he was persuaded to come to Toronto, Canada, in 1913 at the age of thirty-three. Since that time he has contributed enor- iously to the growth of music in his adopted country, carry- ing on the traditions of his fine English background in music while encouraging the development of native individuality in Canadian music. Iillan has been first and foremost a musician of the church--an organist and choirmaster--a proud field which can boast many an eminent name in music including that of J. S. Bach. Willan's creativity in music has flowered in many other directions--as a distinguished teacher, as a lecturer and recitalist, and as a composer. He has written in all forms and for all instruments, but his greatest renown, at any rate in the TUnited States, is for his organ and choral works. The latter constitute his largest single body of compositions by numerical count of titles, and his organ works are in a close second place. iii Willants Introduction, Passaqaglia, and Fuue has been well-known for decades as one of the finest compositions in organ literature, enjoying a position alongside the organ works of Liszt, Yranck, and Reubke.

  • The Musical Heritage of the Lutheran Church Volume I
The Musical Heritage of the Lutheran Church Volume I Edited by Theodore Hoelty-Nickel Valparaiso, Indiana The greatest contribution of the Lutheran Church to the culture of Western civilization lies in the field of music. Our Lutheran University is therefore particularly happy over the fact that, under the guidance of Professor Theodore Hoelty-Nickel, head of its Department of Music, it has been able to make a definite contribution to the advancement of musical taste in the Lutheran Church of America. The essays of this volume, originally presented at the Seminar in Church Music during the summer of 1944, are an encouraging evidence of the growing appreciation of our unique musical heritage. O. P. THE USE OF MULTIPLE STOPS IN WORKS FOR SOLO VIOLIN BY JOHANN PAUL VON WESTHOFF (1656-1705) AND ITS RELATIONSHIP TO GERMAN POLYPHONIC WRITING FOR A SINGLE INSTRUMENT Beixi Gao, B.M., M.M. Dissertation Prepared for the Degree of DOCTOR OF MUSICAL ARTS UNIVERSITY OF NORTH TEXAS May 2017 APPROVED: Julia Bushkova, Major Professor Paul Leenhouts, Committee Member Susan Dubois, Committee Member Benjamin Brand, Director of Graduate Studies in the College of Music John W. Richmond, Dean of the College of Music Victor Prybutok, Vice Provost of the Toulouse Graduate School Gao, Beixi. The Use of Multiple Stops in Works for Solo Violin by Johann Paul Von Westhoff (1656-1705) and Its Relationship to German Polyphonic Writing for a Single Instrument. Doctor of Musical Arts (Performance), May 2017, 32 pp., 19 musical examples, bibliography, 46 titles. Johann Paul von Westhoff's (1656-1705) solo violin works, consisting of Suite pour le violon sans basse continue published in 1683 and Six Suites for Violin Solo in 1696, feature extensive use of multiple stops, which represents a German polyphonic style of the seventeenth- century instrumental music. However, the Six Suites had escaped the public's attention for nearly three hundred years until its rediscovery by the musicologist Peter Várnai in the late twentieth century. This project focuses on polyphonic writing featured in the solo violin works by von Westhoff. In order to fully understand the stylistic traits of this less well-known collection, a brief summary of the composer, Johann Paul Westhoff, and an overview of the historical background of his time is included in this document.

Journal of the International Society for Orthodox Church Music Vol. 4 (1), Section II: Conference papers, pp. 83-97 ISSN 2342-1258 https://journal.fi/jisocm Stifling Creativity: Problems Born out of the Promulgation of the 1906 Tserkovnoje Prostopinije Fr Silouan Sloan Rolando [email protected] At the beginning of the twentieth century, the Greek Catholic Bishop of the city of Mukačevo in what is now Ukraine promulgated an anthology of Carpatho- Rusyn chant known as the Церковноє Простопѣніє (hereafter, the Prostopinije) or Ecclesiastical Plainchant. While this book follows in the tradition of printed Heirmologia found throughout the Orthodox and Greek Catholic churches of Belarus, Ukraine, and Russia starting in the sixteenth century, this book presents us with a number of issues that affect the quality and usability of this chant in both its homeland and abroad as well as in the original language, Old Church Slavonic, and in modern languages such as Ukrainian, Hungarian and English. Assuming that creativity is more than just producing new music out of thin air, the problems revealed in the Prostopinije can be a starting point the better to understand how creativity can be unintentionally stifled and what can be done to overcome these particular obstacles. A Brief History Heirmologia in this tradition are anthologies of traditional chant that developed in the emergence of the Kievan five-line notation in place of the older Znamenny neums. With the emergence of patterned chant systems variously called Kievan, Galician, Greek and Bulharski, each touting unique melodies for each tone and each element of liturgy, the Heirmologia would be augmented with these chants often replacing the older Znamenny, especially for the troparia, stichera and prokeimena of the Octoechos.

SOMETIME HULSEAN PROFESSOR AND LADY MARGARET S READER IN DIVINITY IN THE UNIVERSITY OF CAMBRIDGE HLon&on MACMILLAN AND CO., LIMITED NEW YORK: THE MACMILLAN COMPANY 1901 All rights reserved PRINTED BY J. AND C. F. CLAY AT THE UNIVERSITY PRESS NOTE. book contains the notes made by Dr Hort THISfor a course of Lectures which he delivered in Cambridge as Hulsean Professor in the October Term, 1884. They were written out almost in full, and are printed substantially as they stand. It is clear from the Preface, which was found in the same box with the Lecture Notes, that Dr Hort had intended to publish them. They form a natural supplement to the volume of Lectures on Judaistic Christianity printed in 1894. The subject was one which clearly had a strong attraction for him as one of the earliest attempts to grapple seriously with some of the most indestruct ible problems of life and thought, from a point of view substantially, however imperfectly, Christian. His copies both of the Recognitions and of the Homilies bear the marks of careful and repeated study, the fruits of which are only indirectly repre sented in these Notes. Among other things he had compiled a full Index Verborum for the Recog nitions/ which it has not seemed worth while to vi NOTE print in this volume, but which will gladly be put at the service of any editor of the text of the Recognitions.

Public demand for major works in support of the annual choral festivals held throughout England at that time was considerable which led to the creation of many large scale works for orchestra with soloists and chorus.

ALL SAINTS CHURCH BOYNE HILL MAIDENHEAD PARISH NEWS www.allsaintsboynehill.org.uk Issue 55 21 April 2021 Dear Parishioners and Friends of All Saints, Boyne Hill, The sermon that you will find in this week’s Parish News was preached on the Third Sunday of Easter and speaks about how we are to be an Easter people partaking the Body of Christ that we might become the Body of Christ within our communities. During Songs of Praise on Sunday, apart from the comedian Frank Skinner speaking powerfully about his faith and indeed his prayer life, we heard Archbishop Stephen Cottrell ask that the Anglican Church should offer a Christian presence within every community. As the 98th Archbishop of York he said that we have learned to appreciate each other differently. We are not so individualistic neither do we measure ourselves by the size of our house, car or salary. Instead, says Stephen, we ‘are measuring ourselves by the size of our hearts.’ We are called as communities to rediscover our humanity, and love God and neighbour and build new communities with a new sense of belonging. The second part of All Saints Boyne Hill’s vision is welcome and encouraging people to discover a sense of belonging so that we might as a community share gospel values with others. As we have been planning the work for the floor at All Saints we have once again been challenged to think what impact a Christian community at Street’s wonderful building makes on the surrounding needs and challenges. During the Pandemic we saw the value of many people making every effort to connect with people who needed company via a phone call, offering to purchase food and sometimes medical supplies.
