SOMETIME HULSEAN PROFESSOR AND LADY MARGARET S READER IN DIVINITY IN THE UNIVERSITY OF CAMBRIDGE HLon&on MACMILLAN AND CO., LIMITED NEW YORK: THE MACMILLAN COMPANY 1901 All rights reserved PRINTED BY J. AND C. F. CLAY AT THE UNIVERSITY PRESS NOTE. book contains the notes made by Dr Hort THISfor a course of Lectures which he delivered in Cambridge as Hulsean Professor in the October Term, 1884. They were written out almost in full, and are printed substantially as they stand. It is clear from the Preface, which was found in the same box with the Lecture Notes, that Dr Hort had intended to publish them. They form a natural supplement to the volume of Lectures on Judaistic Christianity printed in 1894. The subject was one which clearly had a strong attraction for him as one of the earliest attempts to grapple seriously with some of the most indestruct ible problems of life and thought, from a point of view substantially, however imperfectly, Christian. His copies both of the Recognitions and of the Homilies bear the marks of careful and repeated study, the fruits of which are only indirectly repre sented in these Notes. Among other things he had compiled a full Index Verborum for the Recog nitions/ which it has not seemed worth while to vi NOTE print in this volume, but which will gladly be put at the service of any editor of the text of the Recognitions.

(University of NSW) B.D. (University of Sydney) Grad. Dip. Min. (Melbourne College of Divinity) School of Arts Faculty of Arts Griffith University A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy May 2007 ABSTRACT The Anglican Church of Australia agreed to a national constitution in 1962. Yet at a national level it is hardly a cohesive body with a sense of unity and common purpose. Historically, Australian Anglicanism developed along regional lines, with the result that diocesan separateness rather than national unity became enshrined as a foundational principle of Anglicanism in Australia. This study questions this fundamental premise of the Anglican tradition in Australia. It argues (1) that it is not a true reflection of the Anglican ethos, both in its English origins and worldwide, and (2) that it prevents Anglicanism in Australia from embracing its national vocation. An alternative tradition has been present, in fact, within Australian Anglicanism from the beginning, although it has not been considered to be part of the mainstream. Bishop Broughton, the first Anglican bishop in Australia, was deeply sensitive to the colonial context in which the Anglican tradition was being planted, and he adapted it accordingly.

BELL AND SONS, LTD. 1914 CHISWICK PRESS: CHARLES WHITTINGHAM AND CO. TOOKS COURT, CHANXERY LANE, LONDON. 5^^ 7 M^iD-s^ PREFACE I -AM ashamed to think for how many years this volume has " been announced as in preparation." Small, however, as it is, the task of gathering material for it has been not light. The historical chapter, in particular, necessitated much research. Of guide-books to Malvern and its church there are many, but they show that characteristic weakness of their tribe — a readiness to make dubious historical statements upon no real authority, and a tendency to repeat, without inquiry, each other's inaccuracies. I cannot hope that my historical chapter is free from errors, but I trust that, being equipped with references, it may prove of service to later students travelling along the same road. Most valuable assistance has been given me from many quarters. I am indebted to, among others. Dr. M. R. James, Mr. G. McN. Rushforth (who is preparing, I am glad to know, a monograph on the Priory's ancient glass).

  • Translation, Canonization, and the Cult of the Saints in England, 1160-1220
TRANSLATION, CANONIZATION, AND THE CULT OF THE SAINTS IN ENGLAND, 1160-1220 Elizabeth Hasseler A thesis submitted to the faculty at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in the Department of History (Medieval History). Chapel Hill 2014 Approved by: Marcus G. Bull Brett E. Whalen Robert G. Babcock © 2014 Elizabeth Hasseler ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Elizabeth Hasseler: Translation, Canonization, and the Cult of the Saints in England, 1160- 1220 (Under the direction of Marcus G. Bull and Brett E. Whalen) The twelfth century marked a significant change in the way that saints were made. While previously sanctification had been a primarily local phenomenon, overseen by local bishops through the ritual practice of translation, throughout the twelfth century the development of formalized, juridical canonization processes allowed the papacy to oversee the process of making a new saint. This thesis addresses the nature of this shift, arguing that even as canonization proceedings became more common, the ritual of translation still retained significance as an act of local cult building. Focusing on the cults of Edward the Confessor and Thomas Becket, both of whom were canonized by the papacy and subsequently translated by their communities, this study will show that the translation ceremony remained significant through the twelfth century as a moment at which saints were commemorated, their lives narrated, and their remains enshrined within the sacral landscape of the community. iii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Thanks go first of all to my family and friends who have supported me throughout my time in school.

ARMITAGE ROBINSON, D.D., F.S.A., Dean of Wells. r I THE beautiful tomb on the south side of the chapel of -L St. Calixtus, adorned with exquisite alabaster panels representing the Annunciation and figures of canons vested in the choir habit, was for a long time assigned to Dean Husee (1302-1305), in spite of the fact that its workmanship was of a much later date. Sir William St. John Hope, who some years ago identified it as the tomb of Thomas Boleyn, pre- centor of Wells, 1451-1472, has been good enough to write me a note stating the grounds of this identification. He " says : Burke gives the arms of Bullen of Stickford, co. DISSENT, DISCUSSION AND DISSEMINATION: THE STRATEGIES OF THE KENSINGTON SOCIETY IN THE MID-VICTORIAN WOMEN’S MOVEMENT REBEKAH JULIA FAIRGRAY CURRER ORCID: 0000-0002-6276-3586 SUBMITTED IN TOTAL FULFILMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY (ARTS) SCHOOL OF HISTORICAL AND PHILOSOPHICAL STUDIES THE UNIVERSITY OF MELBOURNE FEBRUARY 2020 That from Discussion’s lip may fall What Life, that, working strongly, binds – Set in all lights by many minds, To close the interests of all. Lord Alfred Tennyson, Love Thou Thy Land, 1842, as quoted in the English Woman’s Journal, Vol. II, No. 9 (Nov. 1858) 159. ABSTRACT This thesis investigates the strategic communication of mid-nineteenth century British feminism through the activism and networking of the Kensington Society (1850-1890). Collectively and individually, the sixty-eight members of Britain’s first female-only discussion society practised a range of intellectual communication strategies to reform the position of women in society. In combining literary historical and communication approaches, it also aims to readdress the intellectual heritage of the Kensington Society, asking why it was established, and how it was utilised to spark a wider discussion on women’s rights in mid-nineteenth century Britain. To do so, the thesis investigates the political and religious dissenting heritage of the sixty-eight members; their English Woman’s Journal; discussion through private letters and publications, and their involvement in founding Britain’s first women’s tertiary college, Girton College, Cambridge. Through a historicist examination of the communication of the Kensington Society, it specifically examines the pivotal role the Society played in the individual reforms of its members, and the wider women’s movement of Victorian England.
