Abstract Michael Danos was a theoretical physicist who worked in photonuclear physics, relativistic heavy ions and x-ray imaging devices, and spent several years as a Visiting Scholar at the Enrico Fermi Institute. The Michael Danos Papers consist of 15.75 linear feet of correspondence, calendars, writings, notebooks, clippings, transparencies, conference materials, photographs, blueprints and diagrams, and computer disks. Information on Use Access Series V (Boxes 20-28) contains restricted material. Much of this material contains legal correspondence, and is therefore restricted indefinitely. PEOPLE APPOINTMENTS & AWARDS Cornell gets a new chair Two prominent accelerator physicists and Cornell alumni, Helen T Edwards and her husband, Donald A Edwards, have endowed a chair in accelerator physics at Cornell.The chair is named after Boyce D McDaniel, pro fessor emeritus at Cornell. The first holder of the new chair is David L Rubin, professor of physics and director of accelerator physics at Cornell.The donors David Rubin is the first incumbent of the new Boyce McDaniel Chair of Physics at Cornell, asked that the new professorship should be endowed by Helen and Donald Edwards. The chair is named after Boyce D McDaniel. WEINBERG UGENE WIGNER WAS A towering leader of modern physics Efor more than half of the twentieth century. While his greatest renown was associated with the introduction of sym- metry theory to quantum physics and chemistry, for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize in physics for 1963, his scientific work encompassed an astonishing breadth of sci- ence, perhaps unparalleled during his time. In preparing this memoir, we have the impression we are attempting to record the monumental achievements of half a dozen scientists. To avoid pitfalls and their sometimes serious consequences, however, considerable experience with the method is needed. The case of George Placzek appears as an excellent one to illustrate the procedure and its problems. Placzek’s work covered a broad range of topics, including optical and neutron spectroscopy, neutron diffusion, nuclear reactions, and nuclear energy. He worked in a large number of places with some of the most outstanding collaborators and also as sole author during his short professional life. His publications appeared in regular, so-called source journals, in books, lecture notes and also internal reports which were classified till several years after the end of the war. In this article we analyze Placzek’s work and its impact with the aim of illustrating the power and virtues of bibliometric techniques and their pitfalls. ,QWURGXFWLRQ The term ELEOLRPHWU\ is usually applied to the quantitative investigation of the number of publications of individuals, institutions and/or disciplines and their impact as measured by the number of citations they received. The origin of modern bibliometry is related to the foundation in 1954, by E. Garfield, of the company (XJHQH*DUILHOG$VVRFLDWHV, one year before Placzek’s untimely death in 1955. In 1960 the company’s name was changed to ,QVWLWXWHRI6FLHQWLILF,QIRUPDWLRQ (ISI). Its main product at the time was &XUUHQW&RQWHQWV, a booklet containing the table of contents of journals selected to be relevant to the progress of science.1 In 1964 the ISI launched the 6FLHQFH&LWDWLRQV,QGH[(SCI), covering at that time 600 scientific journals.
