  • Children's Implicit Recall of Junk Food, Alcohol and Gambling Sponsorship in Australian Sport
Bestman et al. BMC Public Health (2015) 15:1022 DOI 10.1186/s12889-015-2348-3 RESEARCH ARTICLE Open Access Children’s implicit recall of junk food, alcohol and gambling sponsorship in Australian sport Amy Bestman1,2, Samantha L. Thomas1,2,3*, Melanie Randle2,4 and Stuart D. M. Thomas1,5 Abstract Background: In Australia, sport is saturated by the promotion of junk food, alcohol and gambling products. This is particularly evident on player jerseys. The effect of this advertising on children, who are exposed to these messages while watching sport, has not been thoroughly investigated. The aim of this research study was to investigate: (1) the extent to which children implicitly recalled shirt sponsors with the correct sporting team; (2) whether children associated some types of sponsors with certain sporting codes more than others; and (3) whether age of the children influenced the correct recall of sponsoring brands and teams. Method: This experimental study conducted in New South Wales, Australia used projective techniques to measure the implicit recall of team sponsorship relationships of 85 children aged 5–12 years. Participants were asked to arrange two sets of magnets – one which contained sporting teams and one which contained brand logos – in the manner deemed most appropriate by them. Children were not given any prompts relating to sporting sponsorship relationships. Results: Three quarters (77 %) of the children were able to identify at least one correct shirt sponsor. Children associated alcohol and gambling brands more highly with the more popular sporting code, the National Rugby League compared to the Australian Football League sporting code.

  • Slim Jim Phantom Has Secured His Place As a True Rock-N-Roll Icon. As the Legendary Drummer for the Stray Cats, Phantom, Alongsi
Slim Jim Phantom has secured his place as a true rock-n-roll icon. As the legendary drummer for the Stray Cats, Phantom, alongside band mates Brian Setzer and Lee Rocker, spearheaded the neo-rockabilly movement of the early 80s. With a love for 50s rock-n-roll the Stray Cats took inspiration from that bygone era and mixed with their youthful energy and aggression produced the updated hard-edged rockabilly sound that saw them conquer London, Europe and later the U.S., gaining fans among the likes of Keith Richards, Mick Jagger and Robert Plant along the way. Born in the Brooklyn Borough of New York City, Jim grew up listening to his parents’ jazz records and by the age of ten took up the drums. Immersing himself in the art of drumming and the world of music, Jim took lessons with Mousie Alexander (who played with Benny Goodman), which included the study of jazz and working through books by Jim Chapin and Ted Reed. By the late 70s Jim was playing in bands with school friend and bassist Lee Rocker and they soon joined forces with guitarist Brian Setzer. The rest, as they say, is history. The Stray Cats had numerous hit singles in the early 1980s, their classic album “Built for Speed” went double platinum, and their song “Rock This Town” is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s list of “The Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll.” Summer 2008 saw Jim and the Stray Cats reunite for an extensive tour of Europe. In February 2009 the band headed to Australia and New Zealand for the first time in 18 years - a tour which was eagerly anticipated by Australasian fans.

  • Species Information
Species information 1 Forest Products Commission Species information Beefwood Grevillea striata Beefwood is a medium-sized tree to 14 m, usually with a single trunk and diameter up to 600 mm. Bark is deeply fissured, rough dark grey to the branches, while new bark is rufous red. It grows in the northern Goldfields, Murchison, eastern Gascoyne, southern Pilbara and the Kimberley. Wood description Heartwood is a rich red colour, and straight-grained, with distinctive rays on quartersawn timber. Sapwood is a pale yellow. Wood density Green density is about 1230 kg/m3, air-dry density about 965 kg/m3, and basic density about 820 kg/m3. Drying and shrinkage Tangential and radial shrinkage are about 3.3 and 2.0 per cent respectively. Workability Goldfields craftsmen rate beefwood as very poor for sanding, average for boring, screwholding, stability and finishing, good for machinability and gluing, and excellent for turning. Strength group and properties AS2879 rates beefwood as (S3) and (SD4), which was confirmed by the above air-dry density. The more important strength properties based on strength groups are given in the table below. Property Units Green Dry Modulus of Rupture MPa 73 94 Modulus of Elasticity MPa 12400 14000 Max Crushing Strength MPa 36 54 Hardness KN - - Availability Limited availability because of the scattered nature of the resource. Uses Aborigines used the dark hard resin as an adhesive in tool manufacture. The timber has considerable potential for craftwork, particularly as inlays in marquetry. 2 Forest Products Commission Species information Black morrel Eucalyptus melanoxylon Black morrel is a small to medium-sized tree scattered through the eastern Wheatbelt and central Goldfields, extending south-east of Lake King.
