Helen Lederer before purchasing it in order to gage whether or not it would be worth my time, and all praised Finger Food. Helen Lederer: 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. One of the Few Quick Reads Made in 2012, But a Bit of an Average StoryBy James N SimpsonThe Quick Reads series of books aim is to increase literacy levels by encouraging those who don't like to read beyond magazines and comic books to try fiction through cheap priced short story length fiction and nonfiction. Titles sold off the rack for only a couple of pounds, in fact in 2013 it's down to one pound. Although there were quite a few titles in former years, 2012 (which Finger Food was a part of) saw the beginning of a drastic decline in the number of books released under this UK initiative, a decline which has continued into 2013 with even less. Possibly due to the bad economic landscape in the UK, or maybe due to the vast amount of cheap short stories available on Kindle, who knows. So firstly I would point out it is commendable that actress Helen Lederer has submitted to a hopefully not, but by the looks of things dying but worthy cause with her short fiction story Finger Food. However as much as doing a good deed is worthy of praise, I keep that and the rating of a book separate. For me compared to the other Quick Reads books this one is a pretty average story. That is important when you consider the purpose of these books is to encourage someone who doesn't read much to want to read more. I just don't think Finger Food would do that. It takes a while to get going, the first half of an obnoxious type main character wanting all the full attention of the cake shop worker to the extent of a bratty child would demand over its siblings. I just found a bit of an effort to push through. The short story does get better when Bella gets to the TV studio but even there the story is fairly uneventful. It looked there was going to be a bit of comedy or comeuppance scene involving the contents of a blender at one stage but for some reason Lederer chose to avoid going there. This will adequately pass the time for commuters but I don't think anyone will remember it after they've moved onto their next book.Being this is one of the celebrity, and not people who are actual authors as a career entries, Finger Food may be more appealing to those who are fans of the TV show Absolutely Fabulous and other programmes Helen Lederer has starred in, as well as of her stand-up comedy in general. Bella le Pard's career as a TV presenter is 'on hold'. To fill her days, she sits in a coffee shop and obsesses about a wedding dress in the neighbouring shop. Her luck changes when she gets the call from her old boss at 'Flair for living TV' to present a pilot for a new food and chat show. But her revived TV career is short-lived when one of the celebrity guests threatens to steal the show. Bella finds herself turning to blackmail to save her job. But will her threat to reveal her boss's infidelity keep her on TV? And will she ever find a reason to buy that dream wedding dress? About the AuthorBorn In Llandovery, Helen began her stand-up comedy career at London's Comedy Store. She is best known as the dippy Catriona in the hit TV series Absolutely Fabulous with Jennifer Saunders. She has appeared in many hit TV comedies including Naked Video, French and Saunders, The Young Ones and Harry Enfield's Television Programme. She is a familiar voice on BBC Radio 4. Writing credits include Coping with Helen Lederer, Single Minding, Girls Night Out and Girls Night In. Her one-woman show Still Crazy was a sell out at the Edinburgh Festival. Young, gifted and punk: my mad days with Rik Mayall June 18, 2014 6.03am BST The untimely death of me old mucker Rik Mayall last week has prompted a plethora of obituaries in the press and on television and radio. However, as someone who “nearly” grew up with Rik at Manchester University in the mid- 1970s (we never quite made the leap to post-adolescence) his premature death has been a devastating personal blow – as it has, I’m sure, to all those who knew him. As the youngest of the 1975 intake – Rik was only 56 years old when he died – his passing not only uncomfortably reminds us all of our own mortality but has invoked the glorious memories of an age of creative experiment and glorious mayhem. As an undergraduate studying Drama at Manchester University, I first met Rik when both housed in the Manchester University Hall’s of Residence at Owen’s Park, Fallowfield. What united us from the off was our love of the absurd, the irreverent and the cheap burgers from the so-called Armpit – the nearby Canadian Charcoal Pit take-away. Also we both had a penchant for pulling faces, putting on silly voices and like many of our generation, quoting large sections of Monty Python sketches, which were seen as de rigeur for “coolness” in the mid- 1970s. He was a fascinating life-force, not least because he could stick the top of his ear into the hole. The living was easy at that time with generous student grants to ease the squalor of student life – or rather to propagate it.

Stand-Up Comedy and Everyday Life: Post-war British Comedy and the Subversive Strain. Christopher Ritchie. Goldsmiths College, London, Ph. D Drama, 1998. - ME Ia- AM GOLDSMITHS 87 0079879 6 Abstract. This thesis "examinee,,, its to life , . stand-up comedy and relation everyday and presents a model of everyday life in the commodity society. It seeks to define stand up comedy and how it works as a performance mode and will offer a definition of the stand-up comedian. It will examine how jokes reflect opinions and attitudes within everyday life and how they can communicate negative cultural myths, stereotypes and ideologies but also reach beyond the merely absurd and comical to present authentic moments that enable us to locate the truth about ourselves. The thesis seeks to locate a stand-up comedy that enables us to understand ourselves in relation to life in the commodity society. The thesis traces a subversive lineage through post-Second World War comedy from The Goon Show through the satirists of the 1960s and Monty Pylhon's Flying Circus to Alternative Comedy and stand-up comedians in the present day. The 'Alternative Comedy moment' between 1979 and 1981 is central to the thesis as is the relation to American stand-up comedy, Punk and the rise of reactionary humour in Britain. Alternative Comedy is identified and placed in a social, political and counter-cultural context. The achievements and failures of this comedy will be discussed with particular focus on the redefinition of the role of women and sexual politics in stand-up comedy and the creation of a thriving London cabaret and comedy scene.
