  • Elementary, My Dear Readers
NEW ORLEANS NOSTALGIA Remembering New Orleans History, Culture and Traditions By Ned Hémard Elementary, My Dear Readers NCIS (which stands for Naval Criminal Investigative Service) is an extremely popular “police procedural” television drama that has spun off as a New Orleans series. NCIS: New Orleans, which airs Tuesday nights on CBS, is set in the Crescent City and it would be highly unusual if you haven’t seen the show filming around town. It premiered on September 23, 2014. The episodes revolve around a fictional team of agents led by Special Agent Dwayne Cassius “King” Pride, Special Agent Christopher LaSalle, and Special Agent Meredith Brody. They handle criminal investigations involving the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps. If the NCIS team seems to be everywhere you look these days, allow yourself to travel back in literary time and imagine another famous detective team present all around you. Even if their bailiwick was late Victorian England, I seem to feel their presence all around this historic city. Perhaps you will, too. Arthur Conan Doyle penned his first Sherlock Holmes story, A Study in Scarlet, in novel form in 1886 at the age of 27. In it Holmes expounded: “Criminal cases are continually hinging upon that one point. A man is suspected of a crime months perhaps after it has been committed. His linen or clothes are examined and brownish stains discovered upon them. Are they blood stains, or mud stains, or rust stains, or fruit stains, or what are they? That is a question which has puzzled many an expert, and why? Because there was no reliable test.

Young, gifted and punk: my mad days with Rik Mayall June 18, 2014 6.03am BST The untimely death of me old mucker Rik Mayall last week has prompted a plethora of obituaries in the press and on television and radio. However, as someone who “nearly” grew up with Rik at Manchester University in the mid- 1970s (we never quite made the leap to post-adolescence) his premature death has been a devastating personal blow – as it has, I’m sure, to all those who knew him. As the youngest of the 1975 intake – Rik was only 56 years old when he died – his passing not only uncomfortably reminds us all of our own mortality but has invoked the glorious memories of an age of creative experiment and glorious mayhem. As an undergraduate studying Drama at Manchester University, I first met Rik when both housed in the Manchester University Hall’s of Residence at Owen’s Park, Fallowfield. What united us from the off was our love of the absurd, the irreverent and the cheap burgers from the so-called Armpit – the nearby Canadian Charcoal Pit take-away. Also we both had a penchant for pulling faces, putting on silly voices and like many of our generation, quoting large sections of Monty Python sketches, which were seen as de rigeur for “coolness” in the mid- 1970s. He was a fascinating life-force, not least because he could stick the top of his ear into the hole. The living was easy at that time with generous student grants to ease the squalor of student life – or rather to propagate it.

Following the military tradition of his family, Hawkesworth joined the Grenadier guards in 1940 and had a distinguished World War II record. In 1943 he married Hyacinth Gregson-Ellis and on demobilisation from the army began work in the film industry as an assistant to Vincent Korda. As art director he worked on many films for British Lion including The THIRD MAN (GB, 1949), OUTCAST OF THE ISLANDS (GB, 1951), and The SOUND BARRIER (GB, 1952). As a freelance designer he was involved with The MAN WHO NEVER WAS (GB, 1955) and The PRISONER (GB, 1955). Joining the Rank Organisation as a trainee producer, Hawkesworth worked on several films at Pinewood and was associate producer on WINDOMS WAY (GB, 1957) and TIGER BAY (GB, 1959). Hawkesworth's writing for television began with projects including HIDDEN TRUTH (tx 9/7/1964 - 6/10/1964), BLACKMAIL (Associated Rediffusion tx 1965 - 1966) and the 13 part BBC series CONAN DOYLE (tx 15/1/1967 - 23/4/1967), before embarking on the acclaimed LWT series The GOLDROBBERS (tx 6/6/1969 - 29/4/1969). It was with the latter that the Sagitta Production Company who were to produce the highly successful Edwardian series UPSTAIRS DOWNSTAIRS (tx 1970 - 1975) for LWT, came into existence, making Hawkesworth and his long term professional partner Alfred Shaughnessy household names.
