    PRESS RELEASE Amsterdam, 8 March 2018 Dr A.H. Heineken Prize for Art 2018 awarded to Erik van Lieshout Erik van Lieshout Photo: Jussi Puikkonen The international jury for the Dr A.H. Heineken Prize for Art has unanimously selected Dutch visual artist Erik van Lieshout as this year’s laureate. Van Lieshout will receive a cash prize of EUR 100,000, half of which is meant to finance a publication and/or exhibition. The award ceremony will take place in Amsterdam on Thursday 27 September 2018. The Dr A.H. Heineken Prize for Art is Netherlands’ most prestigious prize for visual artists. It is financed from a private fund and was established thirty years ago. To mark this milestone, the Van Abbe Museum in Eindhoven will be hosting a major jubilee exhibition from 14 July to 30 September 2018. About the laureate Erik van Lieshout (born in Deurne in 1968) lives and works in Rotterdam. He studied at the Academy of Art and Design in ‘s Hertogenbosch and Ateliers ‘63 in Haarlem (1990- 1992). His work consists of drawings, collages, sculptures and videos, often combined into multimedia installations. He always features in his own videos. ‘Erik van Lieshout explodes into our consciousness,’ was how one reviewer recently described Van Lieshout’s exhibition I am in Heaven (Anton Kern Gallery, 2015). As a Manifesta 10 artist (2014), he spent two months overhauling the basement of the Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg, along with the seventy or so stray cats that live there. He sketched and filmed the process. While it appears to document the overhaul, Van Lieshout’s film The Basement (2014) is really about Russia under Putin, gay rights, the seizure of the Crimea, censorship and Pussy Riot.

Hierin vindt u een weerslag van wat het fonds het Presenteren en programmeren afgelopen jaar mogelijk kon maken via bijdragen aan productie en presentatie van kunst en erfgoed uit Nederland. En ook wat het fonds zelf aan activiteiten heeft belegd om kunst en erfgoed voor het voetlicht te brengen. De opbrengst komt uitgebreid aan bod in zeven hoofdstukken genoemd naar de zeven platforms waarin we de uiteenlopende bijdragemogelijkheden en activiteiten hebben gebundeld: Talentontwikkeling, Vitale Internationale presentaties Collectie Nederland, Opdrachten, Presenteren en programmeren, Internationale presentaties, Stimuleren markt en Samenwerken. Het afgelopen jaar was het eerste jaar van een nieuwe cultuur- planperiode, met als motto Verdieping en versterking van de Stimuleren markt vrijhaven van verbeelding, tegelijk de titel van het beleidsplan voor 2017-2020. Voor het realiseren van deze vrijhaven houdt het fonds bij zijn bijdragen aan beeldende kunst en erfgoed twee thema’s voor ogen: ontwikkeling en verbinding. Om inzichtelijk te maken in hoeverre deze doelen worden behaald is een methode Samenwerken van effectmeting verfijnd.

Heineken Prize for Art has awarded the prize to visual artist Ansuya Blom. She will receive 100,000 euros, half of which is intended for a publication and/or exhibition. The jury described Ansuya Blom’s work as intimate, engaging and poetic. The Dr A.H. Heineken Prize for Art is the biggest visual art prize in the Netherlands, financed from a private fund, the Dr A.H. Heineken Foundation for Art. Established in 1988, this year’s biennial prize is being awarded to a visual artist for the seventeenth time. The exact date of the official award ceremony will be announced at a later date as a result of the Covid-19 measures. Jury report Her work does not clamour for attention, nor does Ansuya Blom herself. She chooses to stay in the background and lets her work subtly penetrate. For more than forty years Blom has been steadily working on an oeuvre that explores the boundaries of the inner world of experience. In films, drawings, paintings, installations and texts, she always manages to get under the skin and portrays humankind’s struggle with itself and the environment in an engaging and poetic way. Blom’s work radiates a great social and societal commitment. With her interest in psychoana- lysis and psychiatry, her work offers a space for the voices of those who are often not heard: the marginalised or forgotten people.

    Bibliografie 2004 Beeldende kunst 1850-heden Inleiding bij Sophie van Steenderen, Beeldende kunst 1850-heden. Publicaties van Nederlandse kunsthistorici van 1998-2003 , VNK-bibliografie 2004 Jan van Adrichem 1 De bibliografie die de VNK jaarlijks uitbrengt over een specifiek deelgebied van de tekstproductie van Nederlandse kunsthistorici heeft in 2005 betrekking op het tijdvak 1850 - 2000. De VNK-editie 2005 bundelt de kunsthistorische oogst uit een periode van zes jaar - van 1998 tot en met 2003. Resultaat: de omvangrijkste bibliografie die de VNK tot nog toe maakte. Er zijn 3353 titels in vervat van zo´n 2000 auteurs. Wat zegt dat over de stand van het onderzoek en de tekstproductie in kunsthistorisch Nederland? Bewijst de omvang dat het goed gaat? En –nu we deze biografie toch ten doop houden in het SMCS- wat is bijvoorbeeld het aandeel van de musea van moderne kunst bij deze productie? De vragen zijn concreet genoeg, maar toch moet worden vastgesteld dat het niet eenvoudig is uit de besproken onderwerpen -gerubriceerd over niet minder dan 24 categorieën- iets algemeens te concluderen, dat niet tegelijk een enorme platitude is. Want het beschouwen van besprekingen van Jongkinds proto-impressionisme, of Alma Tadema´s historieschilderkunst, in relatie tot teksten over het video- en filmwerk van bijvoorbeeld Julika Rudelius of Jeroen de Rijke/Willem de Rooij maakt het probleem direct inzichtelijk: dat is een hachelijke onderneming omdat de pluriformiteit van de kunst binnen de afgelopen 150 jaar zo groot is dat het onbegonnen werk lijkt. En zo´n taak heb ik nu op mij genomen. Laat ik om te beginnen iets zeggen over de vermoedelijke oorzaken van de indrukwekkende omvang van deze bibliografie.
