View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Carolina Digital Repository 59 UNC-Chapel Hill DCRP Best Master’s Project of 2009 Evaluation of Environmental Effects of Songpa New Town in Seoul, Korea Jun Huh The purpose of this research is to examine the environmental effects of the proposed Songpa new town development built along the urban growth boundary in South Korea. The project evaluates the proposed development plan from an environmental perspective, which can be easily ignored during a planning process. With the logistic regression model considering accessibility and physical constraint factors, future development in the proposed new town and infill development in two existing alternative areas are simulated based on the assumption that future development will follow past development patterns. The project examines changes in runoff volume directly affecting water quality and flooding in and around the study areas. Pre-development and post-development runoff volumes are estimated through hydrologic analysis using land use, soil type, and average rainfall data. Editors’ note: Portions of this feature have been edited million inhabitants, which is 25% of the total population or cut due to content and space considerations. Within one generation, Korea had transformed itself from a poor agrarian society to a modern industrial nation, a feat never seen before. What makes Korea’s experience so unique is that its rapid economic development was relatively broad-based, meaning that the fruits of Korea’s rapid growth were shared by many. The challenge of course is unlocking the secrets behind Korea’s rapid and broad-based development, which can offer invaluable insights and lessons and knowledge that can be shared with the rest of the international community.

What We Look for in Good Accommodations : We collected information from guesthouses for foreign tourists and hanok guest houses which have acquired a designation certificate from each district office in Seoul (as of August 31, 2014), hotels, and motels via telephone and written surveys. We have also incorporated opinions from an advisory committee consisting of specialists in hotels and tourism, humanities, hanok architecture, and interior design, as well as onsite investigations by reporters. Finally, accommodations with special stories have been selected based on a com- prehensive evaluation in terms of historic significance, the background of owners, spatial uniqueness, and cultural and artistic value.
