The advantage of this was that it has enabled a composite picture of CIL viability issues to be presented to the clients and discussed collectively with them before finalisation, and there have been many benefits for them in considering these matters as a totality rather than viewing them in isolation. The Straw Plait and Hat Trades, Illegitimate Fertility and the Family in Nineteenth-Century Hertfordshire NIGEL GOOSE University of Hertfordshire Abstract The straw plait and hat industry provided considerable employment for women and children in south and west Hertfordshire in the nineteenth century, but was absent in much of the north and east. Many contemporaries felt it had a deleterious effect upon morality and the stability of the family, and its regional specificity within Hertfordshire allows these propositions to be tested through a comparative analysis of illegitimacy and examination of the family circumstances of young straw workers. It is discovered that illegitimacy ratios often give a misleading impression, failing to take into account the size of the population ‘at risk’, while illegitimacy rates suggest only minor differences between straw and non-straw areas, a more noticeable feature of the data being the generally higher illegitimacy rates found in Hertfordshire’s small towns. Nor does the evidence suggest that the industry led to early break up of families. The rise and decline of illegitimacy in England between the late eighteenth and late nineteenth centuries presents a continuing conundrum, and while the growth and decay of the straw industry offers little explanatory value, this article suggests that the changing conditions in the agricultural labour -

NICKEY LINE GREENSPACE ACTION PLAN 2019 – 2024 Produced by: On behalf of: OVERVIEW Greenspace Action Plans Greenspace Actions Plans (GAPs) are map-based management plans which specify activities that should take place on a site over a stated period of time; these activities will help to deliver the agreed aspirations which the site managers and stakeholders have identified for that site. Public Engagement Engagement with stakeholders is at the centre of effective management planning on any site. An initial engagement period was held for five weeks in December 2017 and January 2018, to establish core aims and objectives for the site; these are reflected in Section 3. This plan has been produced for a second stage of engagement to enable stakeholders to comment on the proposed management actions for the site. Coordination with St Albans City & District Council As the Nickey Line leaves from Hemel Hempstead towards Redbourn, it crosses into the St Albans District Council (SADC) administrative area. A GAP is already in place for the St Albans section. The programme of works for the Dacorum section has been produced to complement the programme in the St Albans section. A coordinated approach will be taken wherever practical to deliver projects jointly to ensure continuity across the administrative boundary. Deposited by Messrs. Boulton Sons and Sandeman for the Cannon Brewery. Inventory compiled: LAccession 162] March 1968 D/ECb Introduction This collection consists of deeds incident to the conveyance of the vhole of the Hoddesdon Brewery and all its licensed houses in 1866 and titl e deeds of some of those houses and of others that were acquired later. The expansion of Hoddesdon Brewery dates from its purchase by William Whittingstall from Rene Briand in 1781. From that date til l his death in 1803, rfhittingstall systematically enlarged the brewery*s commercial outlets by buying up a number of public houses in the surrounding district. Messrs. John Christie and George Cathrow bought the property from Vhittingstall's executors and at the death of Cathrow in 1842 it was sold privately to a new partnership of Messrs. Peter Christie, John Back and Robert Hunt. After Peter Christie's death and when 3ack and Hunt had retired to their country estates, the firm was conveyed in 1866 to Charles Peter Christie. On his death in 1898 it was turned into a public company which 30 years later was absorbed by the Cannon Brewery of London, later controlled by Taylor, Valker and Co. and now by the Ind Coope combine.
