For the Old Believers, from the beginning of the movement, in the middle of the 17th century, icons were at the center of their religious life. They were also at the center of religious conflict between Muscovite Patriarch Nikon, who initiated the reforms of the Russian Orthodox Church, and the Old Believers and their proponent, archpriest Avvakum Petrov. Some sources and documents from the 16th and 18th centuries make it possible to analyze the reasons for the popularity of small-sized icons among priested (popovtsy) and priestless (bespopovtsy) Old Believers, not only in their private houses but also in their prayer houses (molennas). The article also shows the role of domestic icons from the middle of the 17th century as a material foundation of the identity of the Old Believers movement. If it is indeed so, Yahoel’s role in controlling these entities puts him in a very special position as the dis- tinguished experts in secrets, who not only reveals the knowledge of esoteric realities but literally controls them by taming the Hayyot and the Leviathans through his power as the personification of the divine Name. Yahoel as Sar Torah In Jewish tradition, the Torah has often been viewed as the ultimate com- pendium of esoteric data, knowledge which is deeply concealed from the eyes of the uninitiated. In light of this, we should now draw our attention to another office of Yahoel which is closely related to his role as the revealer of ultimate secrets – his possible role as the Prince of the Torah or Sar Torah. The process of clarifying this obscure mission of Yahoel has special sig- nificance for the main task of this book, which attempts to demonstrate the formative influences of the aural ideology found in the Apocalypse of Abraham on the theophanic molds of certain early Jewish mystical accounts. In the past, scholars who wanted to demonstrate the conceptual gap between apocalyptic and early Jewish mystical accounts have often used Sar Torah sym- bolism to illustrate such discontinuity between the two religious phenomena. -

After forgiving his brothers for what they had done, Jacob and his entire clan moves to Egypt and this is where the book of Exodus begins. What turn of event occurs in the life of the Israelites in Egypt? Exodus 1:8-11 A generation passes and new powers come to be. A new pharaoh “whom Joseph meant nothing” became fearful the Israelite nation, becoming so fruitful and huge, would rebel against him. The Israelites became slaves to the Egyptians. The Pharoah comes up with what solution? 1:22 Kill every Hebrew boy that is born. The future deliverer is delivered. 2:1-10. A boy is spared, saved from a watery death through the means of an “ark”. Sound familiar? Moses is delivered to one day deliver God’s people out of Egypt, but for the time being, was being brought up in the Egyptian royal household. Moses becomes an enemy to Egypt. 2:11-15. Moses tries to do what is right, but has to flee Egypt for his life so he goes to Mdian. God has a message for Moses. Chapter 3. The Lord tells Moses he will be the one to deliver the Israelites out of slavery, but Moses immediately doubts. 3:11. God tells Moses who He is. 3:14-15. I am who I am. God gives Moses special abilities in order to convince the people. -

Mellon Collection 1937.1.1 ENTRY The painting shows the Madonna seated frontally on an elaborate, curved, two-tier, wooden throne of circular plan.[1] She is supporting the blessing Christ child on her left arm according to the iconographic tradition of the Hodegetria.[2] Mary is wearing a red mantle over an azure dress. The child is dressed in a salmon-colored tunic and blue mantle; he holds a red scroll in his left hand, supporting it on his lap.[3] In the upper corners of the panel, at the height of the Virgin’s head, two medallions contain busts of two archangels [fig. 1] [fig. 2], with their garments surmounted by loroi and with scepters and spheres in their hands.[4] It was Bernard Berenson (1921) who recognized the common authorship of this work and Enthroned Madonna and Child and who concluded—though admitting he had no specialized knowledge of art of this cultural area—that they were probably works executed in Constantinople around 1200.[5] These conclusions retain their authority and continue to stir debate. -

Magruder, III All rights reserved Abstract Byzantine icons have attracted artists and art historians to what they saw as the flat style of large painted panels. They tend to understand this flatness as a repudiation of the Classical priority to represent Nature and an affirmation of otherworldly spirituality. However, many extant sacred portraits from the Byzantine period were executed in relief in precious materials, such as gemstones, ivory or gold. Byzantine writers describe contemporary icons as lifelike, sometimes even coming to life with divine power. The question is what Byzantine Christians hoped to represent by crafting small icons in precious materials, specifically cameos. The dissertation catalogs and analyzes Byzantine cameos from the end of Iconoclasm (843) until the fall of Constantinople (1453). They have not received comprehensive treatment before, but since they represent saints in iconic poses, they provide a good corpus of icons comparable to icons in other media. Their durability and the difficulty of reworking them also makes them a particularly faithful record of Byzantine priorities regarding the icon as a genre. In addition, the dissertation surveys theological texts that comment on or illustrate stone to understand what role the materiality of Byzantine cameos played in choosing stone relief for icons. Finally, it examines Byzantine epigrams written about or for icons to define the terms that shaped icon production. -

If, in the debate about the primacy of sculpture or of painting, Vasari (out of conviction it seems and not for reasons of tactics) declared that the controversy was futile because both arts were equally based οη "d isegno", Ι am afraid that tod ay a similar proposition to remove the object of dissent between art criticism and art history by claiming tha.t both were equally based οη "artistic theory" would, unfortunately, be rejected as being tόta11y out of place. Reconciliation being, at least for the moment, impossible, an art historian might be allowed to stress what in his eyes is one of the advantages of art criticism over art history: that it takes a stand, that it takes risks, that it measures the relevance of a work for the present and for the immediate future. It goes without saying that an art critic also jud ges a contemporary work under the burden of his or her knowledge of the art of the past and of the literature written ab out it. Υ et, this does not change the fundamental fact that the appreciation of the work and the value judgements about its assumed "quality" or "validity as a statement" are elements insid e a perspective looking towards the future and not towards the past. -

23 A Note towards Quantifying the Medieval Nubian Diaspora Adam Simmons Throughout the Christian medieval period of the kingdoms of Nu- bia (c. sixth–fifteenth centuries), ideas, goods, and peoples traversed vast distances. Judging from primarily external sources, the Nubian diaspora has seldom been thought of as vast, whether in number or geographical scope, both in terms of the relocated and a non- permanently domiciled diaspora. Prior to the Christianisation of the kingdoms of Nobadia, Makuria, and Alwa in the sixth century, likely Nubian delegations, consisting of “Ethiopes,” were received in both Rome and Constantinople alongside ones from neighbouring peoples, such as the Blemmyes and Aksumites. Yet, medieval Nubia is more often seen as inclusive rather than diasporic. This brief dis- cussion will further show that Nubians were an interactive society within the wider Mediterranean, a topic most commonly seen in the debate on Nubian trade.1 Above all, it argues that Nubians had a long relationship with Mediterranean societies that has primarily been overlooked in scholarship. Whilst the evidence presented here is not aimed to be definitive, it does highlight that Nubia’s Mediterranean connections may even have been more diverse than what Giovan- ni Ruffini argued for in his book Medieval Nubia whilst describing Nubia as a “Mediterranean society in Africa.”2 May we even argue for a more developed thesis of interaction? What about the Nubian societies throughout the Mediterranean who interacted with other communities both spiritually and financially? It will be argued here that these questions should be revisited and have potential to fur- ther expand Ruffini’s Mediterranean thesis. -

The video narrates each of the steps, focusing on the craftsmanship and different materials. This is a good teaching resource to complement a lecture on the Early Renaissance because it helps the students to appreciate craftsmanship and skills involved in the creation of altarpieces, and it generates discussions on the value and cultural significance of those works. At the end of this class and after showing the video, if there is enough time, I like to show contemporary examples of artists utilizing gold leaf, such as Barkley Hendricks’ Lawdy Mama (1969) and Chris Ofili’s The Holy Virgin Mary (1996), and open for discussion on the different meanings of gold, past and present. Learning Goals: After completion of this assignment, students will be able to: - Explain the technical and material aspects of gold-ground panel painting. - Analyze how the technique influences the resulting artwork. Activity - During a class on the Early Renaissance, while looking at altarpieces by Cimabue or Giotto, I explain tempera painting and the process of gold leaf application in general terms. - After the lecture, students watch the Gerry Museum video on gold-ground panel painting, while working on a series of guiding questions that direct them during the video (sample attached) - After the video, we discuss as a class about what surprised them in the process, and how technique might influence the resulting artwork.
