Hawk 289 Cobra Replica

10 BIRD OF PREY The Hawk 289 Cobra replica soars with the spirit of the original Story and Photos by Iain Ayre

ven though Cobra replicas strive to imitate the original, they all differ in the details. Consider E the Hawk 289. While it runs a bit pricier than some replicas, the end result is a very high-quality car appreciated on the secondhand market. On the other hand, it’s possible to build one on a budget, as the body and kit sell for about $9,800 (plus shipping and customs fees to the U.S.), and good donor engines are an option. In addition, the use of a donor MGB does help save quite a lot on the build. Expensive items such as the axles, brakes, steering column and so on can all be bought as a package in a rust-doomed MGB for well under $1,000. The choice of an American Ford V8 engine also helps to keep mechanical costs reasonable. It’s still possible to find a period-correct 289 ci V8 engine without breaking the bank, although the later 302 ci is essentially the same engine. Stuart Clarke was very taken with the 289 Cobra many years back in an article. That authentic Cobra served as inspiration for his build, and he replicated it as closely as has been practical. But is a fiberglass-bodied kit car based on an MGB going to be anything like an AC Cobra, in real terms? The answer is emphatically, “Yes!”

reincarnationmag.com | Fall 2018 11 Hawk 289 Cobra Replica

For historical perspective, the AC Ace, on which the Cobra was based, was a stylish and spirited 1950s . The Ace originally used the company’s own straight-six, designed back in 1918. AC finally replaced the geriatric engine with a Bristol six, but then Bristol ceased production of car engines. The optional Raymond Mays-improved six was unpopular with posh AC customers, and the prospects looked grim. Then a Texas showman called suggested fitting the small-block Ford V8 with its light, thin-walled block casting, yielding double the horsepower. That concept snowballed into a legend, as the Cobra developed into a fat, scary monster with huge 427 ci big-block motors and bulging wheels and arches. The Hawk is one of the few available replicas of the earlier and more subtle 289 Cobras, with skinny wheels and flattened wheel arches. The suspension on the AC was by single transverse springs at both ends, which was OK for its 2-liter engine, light aluminum body and twin-tube chassis, but not well-suited for dealing with serious power. The same applies to the MGB’s axles and suspension. Like the AC, the MG’s suspension is quite good for its time, and even with basic V8 power doubling its performance, it doesn’t have any nasty habits lurking to bite you. The handling is stable and progressive, and while it doesn’t grip spectacularly well, it will give you plenty of warning before it begins to let go. There’s no snap oversteer or helpless understeer as with big-block Cobras, and the small-block V8 suits both Cobras and MGBs well. The doors are quite small, so if you’re of generous size, The usual manual gearbox coming with a donor Mustang it would be wise to visit Hawk and check that you fit in the engine would be a T5, a strong gearbox with well-spaced ratios. car. Alterations are possible, both in suits and this car. With around 250 lbs-ft of torque available for a relatively light car, gear changing is to some extent optional: You can take off

This engine is a genuine 289, although a 302 uses the same block and is a lot easier to come by. It’s a good engine, cheap to overhaul, powerful, reliable and light for its capacity.

This transverse spring is actually only a visual element. It’s nonfunctional, as the real suspension consists of MGB coil springs.

in second gear and go straight to fifth, and the car will grumble sleepily along at 1,200 rpm. The Hawk’s chassis and body are both thick and substantial, and the car’s overall weight will be similar to an MGB, although the center of gravity will be lower. The light 289 ci V8 engine is actually only slightly heavier than the old-fashioned and very heavy B-series four. It’s also mounted farther back in the chassis, so again, the weight balance is quite like the MGB but rather improved. The dyno-measured torque from Stuart’s V8 is 275 lbs-ft and 210 hp, so substantial power is on tap. It’s not too much for the MGB axles, though, as the Salisbury differential is the same for the MGB, the MGC, and the MGB GT V8. (That’s provided you avoid violence with the clutch, as the differential will comfortably handle a fairly standard 5.0-liter V8.) If a much cheekier engine or rough driving techniques prove too much for the MG differential, a Jaguar XJ6 independent rear end can be bolted to existing alternative brackets on the Hawk chassis, and the Jag axle is pretty well indestructible. The same applies to the front brakes. The standard MGB brakes will lock up the front wheels, as the car still weighs more or less the same as the standard donor MG. Bigger brakes do give you more control and better resistance against fading, so Stuart elected to go down a traditional British upgrade route and fitted Princess four- pot calipers. For more aggressive stopping power, the American Wilwood brand offers good value for money. The original MGB suspension is an independent double wishbone, with the upper portion a lever-arm shock absorber. Even so, this unequal-length double wishbone setup is still a very satisfactory system. The MGB’s crossmember is discarded in the Hawk, but the rest of the donor MG’s front suspension and steering are used. There’s also a Hoyle-designed independent rear suspension conversion available, or Hawk can supply anti-tramp bars (traction bars) and a Panhard rod upgrade for the standard MGB live axle. The sophisticated Hoyle geometry available from Hawk is definitely an improvement, but there’s no rush to replace a perfectly serviceable MGB front or rear axle. Stuart’s engineering experience was initially academic rather than hands-on, and with the help of evening classes, he taught himself to repair cars, from which it’s only a small step to building them. In fact, with a brand-new chassis and body, building a car like a Hawk is probably easier than a restoration. Most folks would agree that this is a charismatic, beautiful and tempting car. If you like MGBs, you will love the Hawk 289. It’s still a 1950s sports car — but with optionally scary performance.

reincarnationmag.com | Fall 2018 15 WISDOM

16 f it were easy, everybody would be doing it, right? That old saying certainly applies to developing a replica and I bringing it to market. Just ask Chris Kleber, D.D.S. Although a dentist by profession, he’s always had a longing to cut his teeth on the replica car business. He opened wide and shared some of his teething pains in doing so. “It all starts with a dream,” he notes. “We all have them as we TEETH read the car magazines or walk through car shows and museums. That special car that you feel defines you and your style or horsepower WISDOM dreams.” How a retired dentist became For Chris, it started with a neighbor’s white Porsche 356A Speedster when he was in fifth grade. “It was so classy compared wiser in the replica business to our family’s blue 1962 Chevrolet Bel Air .” Later on while attending dental school, he could only afford a 1968 1,300 cc, a “poor man’s Porsche” instead of the Speedster that Story and Photos by Larry Weiner he longed for. Then he spotted an Intermeccanica Speedster replica that he realized was actually an affordable alternative, since scraping together enough money to buy a real 356 Porsche Speedster was out of the question. Already knowing how to work on VW Beetles, Chris figured this was the route to feeling the wind in his face, driving a homebuilt replica 356A Speedster down the winding California coastal highway. Just like James Dean would have done — except without the tragic accident. Inspired by these two cars, Chris didn’t experience any collisions, but he did hit a few bumps in the road along the way in founding his own replica firm. After many years running a successful dental practice, he reasoned, how much harder could it be to run a replica firm? Ever done a root canal? Chris came across the opportunity to invest in a company that manufactured replica 356 Speedsters, 356A Coupes and 550 Spyders. However, a series of unexpected business events ensued, presenting him with the chance to acquire the fiberglass molds of all of these models, along with chassis manufacturing equipment and marketing rights. In developing a manufacturing facility, Chris concentrated on building cars to a “roller” stage, where individuals could finish their own cars to their specific personal tastes. His initial firm, operating under a different name, shipped these rollers overseas and to many areas of the United States. The internet kept expanding and this was — and still is — the main source of new customers. Taking roller cars to several car shows helped expand his market exposure. “We even had Austin Powers posing in one of the Speedsters!” (Fittingly, he was actually a look-alike of the Mike Myers character, a replica of Austin Powers if you will.) Chris eventually parted ways with this precursor company, closing it down and establishing his own company, KitMan Motors, in April of 2016. With that change came even more challenges. It was obvious to Chris that he needed to drill down deeper to improve the chassis, making it stronger and easier for the home or pro builder to complete. To make the chassis match and mount to

reincarnationmag.com | Fall 2018 17 The lack of frills on this coupe gives it a more menacing performance persona.

“ It all starts with a dream ... That special car that you feel defines you and your style or horsepower dreams.” Chris Kleber, D.D.S.

18 the body, Chris worked with Ed Fenn of Fenn Chassis Research (who builds 200 mph salt flats racers) to develop a subframe that bolts directly to a shortened VW chassis. It permits both home and professional builders to attach the body directly to the chassis, rather than fiberglassing the body to the frame. This custom, three-piece subframe weighs only 135 pounds and accepts either a coupe or Speedster body. It uses existing mounting points and is fitted on a modified VW pan, shortened from 94.5 inches to an 82.7-inch wheelbase. Modified and registered VW pans can be purchased with or without the subframe. Another benefit of the subframe is that it can be used as a cutting template if the builder wants to shorten and recondition a 1967-71 VW Beetle chassis themselves, instead of purchasing one already done by KitMan Motors. Alternatively, a custom tube frame is available as well, (also developed by Ed). It’s engineered to handle a higher- powered engine for those customers who relish a livelier level of performance, or even track duty. The floor is made of 16-gauge steel, and the total weight of the KitMan tube chassis is 280 pounds. It uses standard ball-joint beam axles up front and an enhanced VW IRS in the rear. The pan of the tube chassis resembles a reinforced VW Beetle pan, but with a thicker gauge sheet metal. The tubular chassis uses a standard VW pedal assembly, with guide tubes for the clutch and accelerator cables built into the reinforced tunnel. An integrated VW rear torsion assembly with a factory VIN makes registering the car with the DMV easier. Surprisingly, the coupe is the company’s most popular body style, even though it’s a more challenging car to build than the Speedster. The bodies are laid up in sunny Tijuana, Mexico, (ideal for curing the resin) and come in black gel coat. A hood, deck lid, dashboard, doors, and front and rear bumpers are included.

reincarnationmag.com | Fall 2018 19 To strengthen areas of stress, such as on the rocker panels and doors hinge locations, a 1/4-inch-thick steel plate is embedded into the fiberglass. Total weight of the KitMan Coupe body is 350 pounds, and the full-up weight of a completed car is about 2,200 pounds (depending on the type of chassis used). As part of his acquisition of the previous company that manufactured turnkey cars, Chris bought a half-finished 356A Coupe with a custom tube chassis and a midmounted 2.5-liter Subaru engine and many other custom features. He felt that finishing this special car would allow him to understand the build process better, and thus better assist prospective customers. Chris points out that the car shown here has the identical coupe body that KitMan Motors now offers, and is nearly complete, with just a few finishing touches needed to be show ready. Even so, KitMan Motors is aptly named, as the company does not normally take cars to completion, but instead offers a component package that’s builder-friendly. Chris isn’t content to rest on these projects, however. He’s now looking into creating a Spyder chassis, as he only offers a body at this time. But then again, Chris has never backed off from taking on fresh challenges, persevering with a big, healthy smile on his face.

Rather than the more

common Volkswagen Type 1, this custom-built coupe runs a midmounted 2.5-liter Subaru engine mated to a VW Bus transaxle.

reincarnationmag.com | Fall 2018 21 Tesla Powered Exocet Readers’ Rides ELECTRIFYING POTENTIAL

22 Editor’s Note: We first spotted an electrified version of Exomotive’s Exocet at the SEMA Show last fall and were intrigued by its Tesla powertrain. Sensing a whole new type of donor vehicle for various project cars, we asked the car’s builder, Ben Horst of Eddy Motorworks, to share some details about his conversion. Ben founded Eddy Motorworks about a year ago with the sole intention of building electric vehicles unlike anything else on the road. His Electrocet, is a radical departure that demonstrates electrifying potential.

t makes sense why most electric vehicles on the market fit one of two molds: luxury sedans or I unexciting commuter pods. After all, these two segments cover a large chunk of the total auto TENTIAL market. But we think that the really exciting part is exploring what can be done with the emerging technologies from the passenger-car world. That’s no different from the very beginnings of motor vehicles: As soon as there were cars, there were people tinkering to make them faster. Building an Exocet with a Tesla powertrain Our company, Eddy Motorworks, builds high-quality electric conversions, taking classic cars from rusty and sputtering to As Told by Ben Horst brilliant and thrilling. As we were starting off, we were also looking to build a flagship vehicle to prove the capabilities of a Photos by Ben Horst and high-performance electric drivetrain in a nonconventional Chadbee Photography vehicle. At the time, we had two vehicles: a hybrid-electric track car prototype and an all-electric 1980 MGB. (We also now have two other EV conversions in the works, a DeLorean and a Mercedes 380SL.) Without exception, we bumped into Kevin Patrick from Exomotive at every event we took our cars to. He would be showing off his Exocet component vehicle kits, a chassis and body system based around the Miata, but we’d always end up talking about how cool an electric version of the Exocet would be — fittingly called the Electrocet. Actually, I think we might have come up with the name first, and then worked out the idea for the Electrocet itself. However it happened, I sat down with Kevin a couple weeks later with a stack of powertrain options for the project. I told him that they were ordered by increasing performance, so of course he flipped straight to the last page. It was titled “Tesla Model S Large Rear Drive Unit and 52 kWh Battery Pack.” I built a computer simulation that calculated performance of EVs based on the build specs for this setup, and it predicted a range of over 280 miles and a 0-60 mph time of 3.0 seconds. It looked great on paper (and software), and so the build began. The first step was to get a totaled Model S as a donor. I scoured the online auctions daily until we found one that had all the right damage in all the right places, so as to not hurt the parts we actually needed. Kevin got it delivered to his shop in East

Besides Tesla’s private Supercharger system, there are a few main standards for fast charging: CHAdeMO, CCS, and SAE Combo. We truly believe there’s a place in motorsport for EVs. OK, they can’t outrun the LMP1 car on a straight yet, but I would argue that the smile-to-speed ratio is unbeatable. Even at relatively slow speeds, the Electrocet makes you feel like you’re piloting a fighter jet with a really good muffler. I don’t know where motorsport will go in the coming years, but my hope is that more people will look at EVs as more than just a luxury or commuter car. They add up to 860 cubes, or 14 liters of displacement, and deliver 1,150 horses, with an equal amount of torque. This V12, all-aluminum monster had so much power, Jeff detuned it to 1,000 hp so the tires wouldn’t disintegrate on his way to the grocery store. (At only 1,600 rpm, the torque is already cresting 800 lb-ft.) His particular engine was built and dyno’d by Hasselgren Engineering in Berkeley, California. Originally designed for marine applications by the aptly named (but now defunct) Torque Engineering, only 12 of these mammoth mills were ever built since they cost $125,000 each. However, Jeff claims that his engine is the only one in existence that runs. Getting that to happen in a Cobra was quite the task, requiring five-plus years of meticulous fabrication work by the talented This V12, all-aluminum monster had technicians at Kirkham Motorsports. This firm has never been one to shy away from extreme projects, aptly qualifying them so much power, Jeff detuned it to 1,000 for Jeff’s ambitious build. But the devil’s in the details, as they say, and these included relocating the firewall rearward several inches and making room hp so the tires wouldn’t disintegrate in the body for six-tube headers on each side. In addition, the stainless steel 4-inch frame rails required some modification in on his way to the grocery store. order to accept the Brobdingnagian block.

32 No, your eyes don’t deceive you. Those are six-tube headers on each side.

Bolted on top are custom-machined billet throttle bodies with 65-pound injectors located under the butterfly valves. Feeding them is “one big-ass Weldon billet fuel pump,” Jeff declares. It delivers 300 gallons per hour, in order to keep pace with the car’s voracious consumption rate. This thirsty snake gets only 3.5 mpg (and that’s just at cruise). No wonder it has a 40-gallon tank. The fuel lines are more than a half-inch in diameter, thicker than your thumb, and the pump draws so much juice it requires 8-gauge wiring. To squeeze the engine into the Cobra’s constricted bay, the coaming at the base of the windshield extends over the pair of the throttle bodies located right in front of the firewall. The ECM actuating them is a Pectel SQ6 with custom Mil-Spec wiring from Zentec, designed for off-road racing. Fortunately, the car lives in Arizona where collector cars are exempt from smog regs. “This thing would never pass emissions testing,” Jeff admits. To further accommodate the extra length of the engine, the TREMEC TKO 600 five-speed was shortened and fitted with a Tilton dual-disc clutch and a 9.5-inch drive shaft. The large hump in the cockpit covers a pair of reverse-rotation Tilton Super Starters typically used in NASCAR vehicles. Once it’s up and running with a ferocious rumble (check out those hand-fabricated sidepipes with six header tubes per side), you’d think excess heat might be a problem. And you’d be right, as “It gets real toasty real quick,” Jeff says. So he has an individual Stewart electric water pump for each bank of cylinders, along with the largest four-core radiator that Kirkham Motorsports offers, which gulps down 26 quarts of coolant. The 3.54-ratio Dana 44 rear end also required some slight modification to handle the V12’s twist. Its CV joints and half- shafts were upgraded to a much harder maraging steel (a material employed on rocket and missile skins). It’s such an improvement, A pair of NASCAR-grade Kirkham Motorsports ended up using it on all its Cobras. The design juices get flowing and all the ideas start popping up. Starting from new is always exciting and also a little stressful, but that’s part of it. As for the first start, it’s super exciting to crank the car up and hear the engine breathe for the first time (kind of like when you hear the whine of a helicopter turbine kick on). The sound of the pistons and exhaust through fresh pipes and a few taps on the go-fast pedal — it’s music. Lastly, when completing the kit, it always seems to end on a sunny day with a picture of the car at the bottom of the driveway — mission accomplished! Now it’s time to clean the garage and start thinking about the next one. The last few cars that I built as of late have been theme-based,

Erik Treves built the Hawk Coupe his way, melding his experience with six previous Factory Five Racing projects, plus his military training on Apache and Blackhawk helicopters.

I wanted to do with it. I knew I wanted a Coyote motor in it, but I didn’t want to do a “plain” build. There isn’t anything wrong with plain or true to the original, but as Wayne always tells me, “You need to challenge yourself every day.” My last car was an extremely period-correct 289 FIA Cobra , so another period-correct car wasn’t on the radar. The issue with the Gen 3, and the original car, is that it is such a timeless shape, that it begs you to “color inside the lines” and stay true to the original look. A challenge for me? You bet! How to make the car my own, yet not insult the history of the car, its designer Peter Brock, or the engineers at Factory Five (Jim Schenck and Jesper Ingerslev). The journey began, and for thefirst time, I wasn’t sure exactly where I was going to end. In addition, this was the first Coupe I’d ever built and it was the beta version! If that wasn’t challenging enough, shortly after deciding on the Coyote drivetrain, I remembered a PowerNation episode of a Coyote twin-turbo Mustang. Perfect! That was the fuse that would lead to my vision of the Hawk Coupe. I decided to build a car that paid homage to two brotherhoods, the Army and Factory Five. A car that would tribute my years of service in the Army and what it did for me, and to my other extended family in the Factory Five community. All the other cars, while built by me, didn’t really tell my story or reflect who I was in the finished product. This car does exactly that. Starting with the military color, olive drab CARC green, which is the color of the helicopter that saved my life and countless others. The cyclic stick from a helicopter serves as gearshift lever, and the decals on the exterior are from my units. And most important, are the names of two souls on the rear

Erik Treves’ initial goal for the Coyote was an output of 675 hp, but he ended up with way more: 805 horses at the flywheel.

Otherwise, the engine is completely stock, actual helicopter cyclic stick right out of the 2016 Mustang. The Coyote internals were improved serving as a gearshift lever. after the 2014 model year. It’s very well documented that the newer engines will support 1,000 hp, so including these power adders was an easy decision. For the plumbing and all, the first thing that needed to happen is establishing a horsepower number goal. Too often people just throw stuff together and then these parts aren’t really happy — the combination just doesn’t work, or doesn’t work well. Here’s where my friend Wayne came in. We wanted to make around 100 hp more than the Green Lantern Cobra, so we aimed for 675 horses (but ended way north of that, as you’ll see). The horsepower level determines how big of a turbo you need and also sets the size of the intercoolers. Then you have to figure out where to put all the pieces. When I first saw the coupe layout at the SEMA Show, the footboxes looked perfect for intercoolers, and the turbos would go right around the header area. My initial assessment was right, as that plan never changed! It looks really complicated, but honestly, it really can’t go any other way in my opinion. I never sketched it out or anything, I looked at it and it just made sense. The fabrication part was a simple exercise in welding tubes together and making things as tight and symmetrical as possible. For me, it’s about the little things and making sure everything I do is very deliberate. And as each detail grows on the next, they end up complementing each other. That’s the big difference between a DIY “throw-it-together” turbo kit (which looks like it sounds) and a clean custom turbo installation that looks like it was born to be in the car. I think that’s what I accomplished with this car. In the end, the piping and turbos work really well with the Coyote, and that engine really wants to be forced some air. I am really not leaning hard on it at only 10 psi, and it’s making around 805 hp at the flywheel — plenty of power! The neat thing is that it is easy to drive and very enjoyable. That’s a tough combination to have at these horsepower levels, but it’s a testament to the Coyote engine and the engineering of Factory Five Gen 3 Coupe. The car is built with an incredibly rigid chassis, and it works well with a nice streetable tune by Wayne. Looking back on the project, there is so much detail covered in matte black and green paint that you don’t even notice how much “stuff” is in the car. Every place you look there is another small detail that was missed the first two times you looked at the car. The motto of the build was “everything gets touched.” That’s a lot of pieces to touch, but in the end, the car came out exactly as I hoped and I stand next to it as proudly as I wore the patch on my right shoulder while in uniform. The Gen 3 Coupe is by far the best design from Factory Five to date, and as a result, it’s the best driving car I’ve ever built.

with a low-mounted steering wheel greatly benefits from a modern tilting column.

great many street rods built in recent years adopted steering columns from late-model Chevrolets built in A the 1980s and 1990s. Today, a few decades later, it would be fair to say that those columns are being replaced by units that deliver a much improved driving experience over OEM. It’s not because the OEM assemblies had some fatal flaw — it’s just that by today’s standards, they are less able to satisfy aftermarket requirements. Perhaps the most notable advancement in the evolution of the modern steering assembly is a tilt mechanism. This feature was initially introduced to street rods of the 1930s style to bring about a more comfortable steering wheel angle, since some discomfort resulted from the awkwardness of the original near-vertical column. In addition, tilt provided welcome relief, particularly on entry and exit from under a low steering wheel (often the case on a Cobra replica), or tall seat (especially for those drivers with generous proportions). Though the technology gradually evolved into the familiar five- position tilt, modern mechanisms like these from the Tecumseh, Michigan, firm ididit further refined the device to incorporate eight positions. As such, these steering columns conveniently arc through a total of 35 degrees, with three positions above the center location and four below. “The tilt mechanism provides such creature comforts it’s almost a necessity,” points out Patrick Russum of Rods R Us. “It fine-tunes the column to your driving style.”

he words “family reunion” conjure up a wide range of emotions T for most people. For some, this phrase brings up memories of good times spent with family and friends, while for others, it AMILY WAY might create some apprehension. Fortunately for Cobra owners, everyone in this “family” is surrounded by stunningly beautiful cars and some of the most like-minded and generous enthusiasts in the automotive world. Now in its 15th year, the London Cobra Show has grown to be one of the most fun-filled auto festivals on the planet. Hosted by the Ohio Cobra Club as a charity fundraiser for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, this annual event is held in London, Ohio, and the surrounding area during the last weekend in June. A tally of 154 Cobras registered for this year’s event, representing more than 10 states, with some participants traveling several hundred miles to the show. This year also attracted 15-plus Cobra owners who registered for the event without even bringing their car, just so they could enjoy the camaraderie of the show. Thursday is arrival day, and it’s a spectacle to witness each of the uniquely beautiful roadsters, coupes and even a few GT40s make their way into the parking lot. With each arrival, everyone gathers around to check out the rides and to greet old friends or welcome new ones. Soon enough, hoods are up and the good times are underway. If you’re a roadster owner with no convertible top, you tend to have more concern than usual about the weather, and there were ominous forecasts for heavy rain throughout the weekend. While some folks tow their cars to the event, the vast majority of Cobras arrive under their own power. Many navigated rain-soaked roads on the way to the show, but the Cobra drivers and their passengers proved their mettle, and a group of hearty enthusiasts began streaming in by early Thursday afternoon. Cobra roadster owner and regular LCS attendee, Garry Bopp, was in the middle of engine upgrades this year, so he would not be able to bring his car but decided to make the trip from Atlanta anyway. “I was not happy that my Challenge Car wasn’t ready for LCS, but I certainly wasn’t going to miss out on the show,” Garry relates. “I saw on the Ohio Cobra Club webpage that they were looking for volunteers to help out at the show, and I signed up to work the burnout lane on Saturday afternoon.” But it turned out that he wasn’t stuck with just being a bystander to all the driving excitement. “No sooner did I arrive than my friends, Brian and Tracy Klecker and Matt and Mary Ries, offered me their cars to drive at the autocross!” Garry enthused. “I had never done autocross before, so I was somewhat reluctant to take them up on their offers, but Matt finally wore me down, and I jumped in his car and did several sessions. Great fun!” Friday’s official events included a variety of guided cruises. These included the Wade Chamberlain Memorial Autocross, a road trip to the Vintage Grand Prix at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, the Frank Forestier Memorial Cruise to Serpent Mound, the Flying Freddie Memorial Cruise to the National Museum of the United States Air Force, and an escape to the Shawshank State Prison tour.

SNAKE HANDLER

64 How an Aussie Python attacks its prey | Story and Photos by Steve Temple

reincarnationmag.com | Fall 2018 65 Australian Python Cobra

hey do things a bit differently Down Under. Take T snakes, for instance. The pythons of Australia have no venom, and contrary to popular misconception, they don’t crush their prey to death. The speed with which the coils are applied is impressive and the force they exert is significant, but death is caused by cardiac arrest. There’s another kind of python in Australia that might give competitive drivers a heart attack, too, as it strikes with impressive speed. That’s the Python developed by George Vidovic, a Cobra replica with a whole ’nother twist. Before we reveal how he found a new way to skin a replisnake, a bit of history is in order. As recounted in his self-published book, Pride Passion Persistence — One Man’s Automotive Dream, he was inspired back in 1979 by a movie, The Gumball Rally, to travel to America and purchase a Cobra. That replica served as a starting point for decades of development, culminating in the car shown here. Despite lacking any formal training in engineering, his first version of the Python brand uncoiled in 1982 at the International Motor Show in Sydney. Admittedly a shaky start, with only a 302 Ford for power, the design would evolve over the years from Under the removable cowl hood a ladder frame with MGB fronts and a Jaguar rear end, to a tubular space-frame chassis with custom, purpose-built lurks a 358 ci (5.8-liter) NASCAR suspension. And a whole lot more, as we’ll see. It took years of track-hardened use to develop the current configuration, experimenting with a variety of Ford and Chevy dry-sump V8 built by John Sydney engines. George has competed in more than 300 individual races, winning an owner/driver championship in 1998, and a Racing to deliver 600-plus horses. team owner championship in 2000, among many other achievements.

66 Even though the rawboned racing cockpit is right-hand drive, left-hand versions can be specified instead.

Aero mods keep the Python streamlined and stuck to the track.

No award for cosmetics with this 600 hp NASCAR mill. It’s all about winning a trophy on the track.

The removable front clip makes for quick access in the pits.

68 An earlier version of the racing Python lit up the track at Sandown International Raceway in 2005.

Braided fluid lines abound in this engine bay.

What’s the competition-grade setup now being campaigned here in the States? The fronts feature dual, unequal-length A-arms fixed to a General Motors steering rack and uprights and damped by KONI adjustable coilover shocks. The Raybestos six-piston calipers squeeze down on 330 mm vented discs. Out back is an independent rear suspension consisting of an 8.8-inch differential and CV joints, and unequal-length control arms with alloy uprights and adjustable KONI coilovers. The brakes are four-piston units. Under the removable cowl hood lurks a 358 ci (5.8-liter) NASCAR dry-sump V8 built by John Sydney Racing to deliver 600-plus horses. Power surges through a four-speed Jerico gearbox. The engine bay is far from pretty, but its execution is functional and menacing. So too is this race car’s cladding, with radical aero treatments at both the leading and trailing ends, plus a large rear wing, all to reduce drag and increase downforce. Pods for the side exhausts and ducting at the rear quarters are also designed to enhance airflow. As George puts it, in 2014 he created “a new bodied, Cobra-style car that wouldn’t lose the essence of the legendary Cobra, yet would still be able to bring the body shape into the 21st century.” In other words, “the Python looks like a Cobra that has swallowed a Le Mans LMP1 race car.” While George is the main driver of the Python (literally, in many cases), he’s sold his tooling and operation to David Murphy of TRJ Engineering, who plans to export the Python to the States. Either left- or right-hand drive cars will be available with a variety of packages, ranging George Vidovic readying from street to competition configurations. hearken back to the ’60s, the Roush engine has a state-of-the-art Borla Induction injection system.

70 FYI EFION Borla’s high-performance electronic fuel injection Story and Photos by Steve Temple

hat racing enthusiast doesn’t appreciate the look and performance of Weber carbs? Those air horns on the W throttle bodies not only look impressive, but also make beautiful music on the track. How about on the street? Well, they really weren’t designed for slow speed — kind of like expecting a thoroughbred to also be a workhorse. And tuning out the “flat spot” in the power band requires some expertise. Easy if you know how, but there’s another alternative to running a track star on the street: electronic fuel injection. EFI wasn’t available back in the ’60s when the GT40 won at Le Mans. But this modern-day replica from Superformance benefits With the engine located right behind the cockpit, from advances in induction technology. The 560 hp Roush 427 IR (a you can’t help but feel the flood of horsepower. stroked Ford 351W) is fitted with an EFI system from Borla Induction. Actually, two different versions of EFI are available from Borla. One has a period treatment (the Eight Stack throttle body system), featuring retro looks with contemporary EFI technology. Configured to look like the Weber carburetor systems of the 1960s, the Eight Stack system has a traditional style you’d expect in a replica of an iconic ’60s racer. The other is a more modern looking system that Roush uses with its crate engine packages. It mounts up just like a set of Webers would, but makes no effort to conceal its modern EFI components. Whichever one you prefer, they both completely omit having to make any calibration changes for weather, temperature and altitude — thus omitting the need for trays full of varying jet sizes. The engine computer, a user-tunable FAST XFI Sportsman unit in this case, automatically compensates for these variations in climate and barometric pressure. If you’re driving a classic racer or muscle car,

72 this means more time driving and fewer tuning adjustments and hard starts. After all, those Webers were tuned for running in the upper part of the rev range, as much as 90 percent of the time. So when older Le Mans cars came into the pits (such as the Shelby GT350R, FIA Cobra, and GT40), they didn’t idle at low revs like any street car does. In fact, their idles were set high, at about 2,000 to 3,000 rpm, so they wouldn’t have any stalling issues. This setting also maintained the air velocity so they wouldn’t pop and sputter through the stacks due to their lumpy cams with long durations. That’s because big cams and open-port induction systems don’t work well together at low revs — unless you have a lot of cubic inches to keep enough volume and velocity going through them. You have to feather the throttle to get into the higher range of the power band, where these systems love to run. Anything below that and they bog down. Enter the modern EFI. It’s made a world of difference in engine performance, with precise computerized metering that runs cleaner and smoother. It delivers the right amount of fuel, at precisely the right time for every engine operating condition, across the entire rev range. The electronic control unit, or ECU, receives information from a variety of sensors, in and around the engine, and makes the appropriate adjustments to fuel delivery to maintain optimum, preset air/fuel ratios. Borla’s system uses a batch-fire, rather than sequential setup, as the latter is better to optimize an engine for racing on the ragged edge. On the other hand, a batch- fire system is nicely suited for a road-going vehicle. EFI systems work a bit better than the IDA or IDF Weber carbs because fuel is delivered via a high spray, rather than being reliant on air velocity to “pull” fuel through the main jets. They’re also not subject to fuel surging and frothing associated with float bowls in carburetors. The forces resulting from hard cornering on uneven road conditions, whether in horizontal or vertical motions, have no effect on EFI systems. In addition, when adding forced induction, EFI can be programmed to compensate for the boost in airflow. The Borla throttle body systems consists of individual throttle bodies that make for a “one runner per cylinder” induction system. Available in both 50 mm and 58 mm throttle sizes (for small- and big-block applications, respectively), these systems provide the best of both worlds: maximum power output, good cold-start characteristics, and stop-and-go drivability on the street. VENDORS The Borla throttle body induction system includes high- volume fuel rails so there’s plenty of fuel reserve to pull Ad on Borla Induction Superformance from under hard acceleration. Since the injectors require Pg. 27 877-462-6752 800-297-6253 a steady supply to operate properly, there’s an adjustable www.borlainduction.com www.superformance.com fuel pressure regulator, now integrated into the fuel rail crossover at the rear, and machined from 6061-T6 aluminum. A Hall effect sensor, which precisely measures variations in a magnetic field to determine engine speed, is available as an upgrade and is typically preferred for competition applications. Why? “It never wears out,” points out Borla’s Garry Polled. “There are no contact points.” Does that mean there’s no more tuning required on an EFI? Not exactly. “Just because it’s electronic fuel injection doesn’t mean you don’t have to go through a balancing procedure,” he Borla Induction’s latest Gen 3 notes. throttle kits have screw-in air For proper functioning, all the throttles need to open and horns and fuel rails that are close at the same time (essentially the same process as synchronizing “blind” at the front. multiple carburetors, but somewhat easier with EFI). Without going into excessive detail, this procedure basically involves adjusting the compensating and bypass screws on each pair of throttle bodies so that all eight throttles are within one graduation on an STE airflow meter. Then, you’ll want to check the voltage output of the throttle position sensor. It should be between 0.5 and 0.7 volts at idle and 4.5 volts at wide-open throttle. In addition, Vlado Jancev of V’s Performance does a 100- mile shakedown on the engine to tweak the low-throttle performance on the street. “Roush does a dyno tune so the engine fires up and runs,” he points out. “Making power is easy, but we look for any hiccups on the street, using a laptop to check the timing and fuel, and make sure it’s a smooth running car with good driveability.” The fuel pressure When installing an EFI engine, obviously electrical connections

That means using wiring with sufficient gauge, and the fuel rail crossover at grounding wire must be attached with a star nut to an unpainted the rear and section of the vehicle’s frame. Otherwise the ECU might not machined from function consistently in actuating the EFI system. But that’s a 6061-T6 aluminum. small price to pay for such a vast improvement in driveability and reliable performance in a wide variety of conditions.

74 Take a close look at the Weber-style throttle bodies and the fuel rails and injectors are obvious. There’s no effort to conceal them, as on Borla Induction’s period-style Eight Stack system.

In December 1992 I purchased a 1974 Datsun 260Z for $200. The very next month, I purchased the Velo Rossa body package and starting tearing down the car. Once I had the car mostly stripped down, I delivered it to a friend, Don Morris, who owns a shop in Stockton, California. A few weeks later, John delivered the kit himself, driving over from Arizona. He spent the day at the shop answering questions. He was very helpful throughout the entire 15-month build, and to this day, I periodically reach out to him with questions and to provide him with updates on the life cycle of the fast, red Spyder. The car was built following John’s instructions with little variation. We installed a rebuilt L24 engine and four-speed transmission, dual downdraft Webers, six-into-two headers, glass packs and a custom X-pipe exhaust. In addition, the suspension was upgraded and Honda bucket seats were installed. We modified a set of Prime wheels by painting the center area for a more traditional style and wrapped them in tires from BFGoodrich Tires (265/50R15 rear and 215/60R15 front). I had

At the end of the build, I was so excited to drive it that I couldn’t wait for paint. I began driving the car in the red gel coat pretty regularly. I loved it so much that I just couldn’t give it up long enough to get it painted. Eventually, I decided I wanted to personalize the car a little. We inset the taillights and removed the rings. I also fiberglassed over the fuel door on the rear quarter panel, and turned the filler neck to inside the trunk. Lastly, I darkened the headlight covers and had the car painted Porsche Red. Ever mindful of the car’s creator, I sent John pictures of all my modifications. The car continued to be driven weekly, weather permitting, as it is a full-time convertible. Around 2004, I met Gary Cook at a car show where he was showing his Datsun 240Z race car. His company, Vintage Performance in Sacramento, California, specializes in Mustangs and Cobras, but he loves Datsuns. I told him of my car, and he said he was actually considering building one himself. Since that time, Gary has helped me with every modification to the car, several of which were items of his own creation. In 2006, Gary switched out the seats, installing Miata buckets, a new dash, and custom vent covers under the hood. He also modified and installed the original side-draft carburetors, which worked better than the downdrafts. A few years later, we upgraded to a 280ZX five-speed transmission. In December 2016, I purchased a 1976 280Z with plans of installing another Reaction Research kit. Instead, I decided to finally make my Velo Rossa as fast as it looks. First, Gary rebuilt and installed an L28 engine with an E88 head and a Rebello 279- .540 Hot B Cam. Rebello also supplied the triple 44 mm Webers on a TWM intake and a Centerforce gold clutch. The whole setup now makes approximately 240 hp, and a custom crossbrace was built to finish off the engine compartment.
