Thankfully, the weather stayed dry all day (it started to drizzle with just 10 minutes to go), so the day’s proceedings went according to plan. For both morning and afternoon sessions the gates had to be opened 30 minutes early because of the queue, and in all 631 people attended the event, with fathers being admitted free. Cars on display in Halls B, C and D were shown with bonnets up, while outside a string of 45 cars took it in turns for five-minute demonstration runs around the quadrant in each session. This included a surprise Back to the Future appearance of ‘Dr Emmett Brown’ in a DeLorean. A handful of motorcycles also joined in the parades. The museum’s deli, together with the various food and beverage stands set up in Hall A, kept all the dads and their families suitably nourished and the wine sales table was also full of activity. Many visitors bought tickets for a ride around the L’Ormarins grounds aboard the ex-Heidelberg Commer-based Merryweather fire engine, complete with its wailing ‘dee-dah’ siren. Also busy all day was the slot car circuit, which proved to be a very popular distraction for youngsters. The day’s action was thoroughly enjoyed by all, borne out by the many compliments received directly by FMM and comments posted on the various social network sites. A NEW OLD ROLLS-ROYCE JOINS THE COLLECTION FMM has just acquired a remarkable motor car, a Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost. The chassis, number 14AC, was manufactured in 1915 and immediately commissioned by the British Admiralty for war duty. The car was sold back to R-R in 1918 and refurbished by Vickers before becoming the property of famous South African military commander Sir Pierre van Ryneveld, who kept the car until his death in 1972. Johan, Koos and Koos’s son Johan van der Wat collectively bought the car from the estate. The original body had been replaced but the Van der Wats had the car restored to a period London-Edinburgh Sports Tourer design. Since then the car has been regularly driven, shown and rallied by the Van der Wat family, and now it has become part of the FMM collection. The 1930s proved that: the Winter Olympics in Germany in 1936, when the President of the International Olympic Committee threatened to cancel the Games unless the anti-semitic posters were all taken down now, whatever Adolf Hitler decrees; the 1936 Summer Games in Berlin and Hitler's look of utter disgust when Jesse Owens, a negro, won the 100 metres; the World Heavyweight title fight in 1938 between Joe Louis, a negro, and Germany's Max Schmeling which carried racial undertones and overtones. The fight lasted 2 minutes 4 seconds, and in that time Louis knocked Schmeling down four times. They say that some of Schmeling's teeth were found embedded in Louis's glove... Motor racing, a dangerous but genteel activity in the 1920s and early 1930s, was touched by this, too, and touched hard. The combustible mixture produced two Grand Prix races at Donington Park, in 1937 and 1938, which were just as dramatic, just as sinister and just as full of foreboding. This is the full story of those races.

Matra Djet 5S 1965 Gallerij +32 (0)53 63 12 33 www.marreyt.com [email protected] Matra Djet 5S 1965 In the beginning of the sixties, two French-built Merk Matra competition cars were dominating the racing scene: the Alpine A110 in rally-sport and the Deutsch Bonnet / Matra Djet in road racing. Model Djet 5S Although they excelled both in their separate disciplines, for the main public they were direct competitors. The first Bonnet-only (formerly Bouwjaar 1965 Bonnet was partnered with Deutsch = DB sports cars) built sports car was the 1962 Djet, based on years of racing experience in Le Mans. Its mid-engined concept gave a road behaviour and weight distribution that were unequaled at that time. Unfortunately the Djet was so expensive to produce that Bonnet went bankrupt in 1964. The Matra (Mécanique Aviation TRAction) company was founded in 1945 with a core business in military plane manufacturing, aerospace applications and the processing of all sorts of plastics. It was in this last branch, they manufactured the glassfibre body shells for René Bonnet cars and when Bonnet went bankrupt, Matra took over the rights to build sports cars. From then on the Djet was further improved and several Djet (later renamed Jet) evolutions followed. Matra's racing experience, Formula 1-2-3 successes and their strong marketing machine made sure that Matra reached the Paris jet set: it became a must-have for the rich and the famous (Joeri Gagarin owned one). Even the French Gendarmerie owned several cars to patrol the autoroute du soleil! Needless to say, the Matra Djet is a beautifully engineered and highly successful little sports car, enjoying a strong appreciation by sports car connoisseurs which is translated in a steadily increasing value.

ACES WILD ACES WILD The Story of the British Grand Prix THE STORY OF THE Peter Miller Motor racing is one of the most 10. 3. BRITISH GRAND PRIX exacting and dangerous sports in the world today. And Grand Prix racing for Formula 1 single-seater cars is the RIX GREATS toughest of them all. The ultimate ambition of every racing driver since 1950, when the com petition was first introduced, has been to be crowned as 'World Cham pion'. In this, his fourth book, author Peter Miller looks into the back ground of just one of the annual qualifying rounds-the British Grand Prix-which go to make up the elusive title. Although by no means the oldest motor race on the English sporting calendar, the British Grand Prix has become recognised as an epic and invariably dramatic event, since its inception at Silverstone, Northants, on October 2nd, 1948. Since gaining World Championship status in May, 1950 — it was in fact the very first event in the Drivers' Championships of the W orld-this race has captured the interest not only of racing enthusiasts, LOONS but also of the man in the street. It has been said that the supreme test of the courage, skill and virtuosity of a Grand Prix driver is to w in the Monaco Grand Prix through the narrow streets of Monte Carlo and the German Grand Prix at the notorious Nürburgring. Both of these gruelling circuits cer tainly stretch a driver's reflexes to the limit and the winner of these classic events is assured of his rightful place in racing history.
