People with a disability are encouraged to apply EDITORIAL Senior Final Series - Issue 2, September 7th - 8th, 2019 By MATTHEW DUCK Failing to plan is planning to fail. It’s an old adage but it still rings true. As we draw closer to the end of another season, it’s an important period for league and clubs alike to review the year and identify opportunities moving forward. Some of that reviewing and subsequent decision-making has already commenced. As some of you will have read, last week it was announced that ahead of the 2020 season the approach to the player points model is set to change, with consideration of ‘sustained success’ (thus potentially being reduced a point(s)) and/or ‘distinct disadvantage’ (for whatever reason) that may potentially warrant an additional point(s). As mentioned, this is a model used extensively throughout Victoria and comes with the majority support of WRFL senior clubs. WRFL Footy The weeks immediately following the end-of-season also provide an Record opportunity to consider other initiatives in anticipation for the season ahead, including further expansion of the WRFL’s training and development space. Western Region The WRFL made a marked effort to increase its training opportunities over Football League the past two seasons, although pulled back a little in 2019 on the volume of what was delivered last year. The Victoria University WRFL/EDFL Volunteer’s President Meredith Angwin Conference was held again earlier this year and focused on club planning, fi nancial management, risk management and compliance, and managing Level 1, Whitten volunteers. The Conference will likely run again in 2020, although potentially Oval, Footscray under a different format. CEO With the development of the WRFL’s website has come further opportunity Matthew Duck to utilise the website as a hub of information for club administrators. My experience as a club administrator is that at times you can drown in emails, O f fi c e and the ongoing development of ‘Club Hub’, a portal on the website where key 03 9315 5400 information, survey links and results, opportunities for clubs etc have been Editor universally shared has hopefully simplifi ed the process for club administrators. Kristen Alebakis Online support/education tools will continue to increase moving forward, meaning people can access support when and where it suits them. Focusing on key appointments, recruiting, budgeting, junior development, strategic planning etc are just some of a host of activities clubs are about to embark upon, if not already. Not surprisingly, a lack of volunteers is a major Cover: threat to our clubs, and is closely related to player retention and fi nancial Kevin Johnson from Altona stability. If you’re reading this as a club supporter, spectator, parent or friend, in action earlier this season. and you’ve thought about helping out before but never have, I urge you to seek out your club president and offer to take on a job. Never has it been Picture LOCAL LEGENDS more important for our clubs and our community. PHOTOGRAPHY See you at the footy.
