FREE ELLIOTT SMITH PDF Autumn De Wilde | 224 pages | 09 Nov 2007 | CHRONICLE BOOKS | 9780811857994 | English | California, United States Either/Or (album) - Wikipedia N o one could honestly claim to be surprised when they heard Elliott Smith had committed suicide. Plenty of folky singer-songwriters have a reputation for making introspective, melancholy music, but none quite like Smith's. He was the "unhappiest man in the land", a singer you didn't so much Elliott Smith to as commiserate with. According to his friend, singer Mary Lou Lord, Smith was the heir to the tragic mantle of her former boyfriend, Kurt Cobain: he was making records for "the sad kids". His gloom was more than sulky posturing: when Smith sang about heroin addiction or alcoholism or depression, he was singing about things he had experienced first-hand. The cover of his second, eponymous solo album, released in Elliott Smith, features a grainy image of bodies Elliott Smith from a high building. As one tribute article wryly noted, you couldn't say that Smith didn't warn you. That is Elliott Smith to say the circumstances of his death were not shocking. Last year, just before lunchtime on Tuesday, October 21, Elliott Smith apparently had an argument with his girlfriend, fellow musician Jennifer Chiba, at their home in Silverlake, Los Angeles. As the row got worse, Smith threatened to commit suicide. Like most of Smith's close friends, Chiba was used to him making melodramatic threats about ending his life. After all, this was a man who, when he decided to relocate from Portland to Brooklyn in the late s, bade farewell to his Oregon friends by informing them that it was likely he would never see them again because he was "probably going to kill himself".

7th January 2014 For Immediate Release: Toadies Announce Release of 20-Year Anniversary Edition of Platinum Selling Breakthrough Debut Album Rubberneck – Out April, 1st 2014 on Kirtland Records New York, NY – Fort Worth, Texas’ Toadies kick off 2014 with the announcement of the April 1st release of the 20-year anniversary edition of their platinum-selling breakthrough debut album Rubberneck on Kirtland Records. Originally released in the summer of 1994 on Interscope, the anniversary edition has been remastered and will include three additional songs from the Rubberneck recording session with producers Tom Rothrock (Foo Fighters, Elliott Smith, Jimmy Eat World) and Rob Schnapf (Tokyo Police Club, Saves the Day, Beck) as well as two rare live songs – fan favorite “Tyler” and their most popular single to date “Possum Kingdom.” When asked about the reissue, drummer Mark Reznicek commented: Hard to believe it's been 20 years since “Rubberneck” was released. It seems like yesterday, but at the same time it was a lifetime ago. Of course, we never dreamed people would still be listening to the album 20 years later or that it would become a staple on radio after all this time. So, as a thank you to all our fans for supporting us through the years, and as a way to celebrate this milestone, the time seemed right to remaster and reissue the album. To enhance the package and complete the “Rubberneck” experience, we've included some cool bonus rarities. Three songs from the original recording sessions have been included, giving fans the complete “Rubberneck” recording sessions for the first time ever.

  • PROCESS-ORIENTED AESTHETICS in 1990S ALTERNATIVE ROCK and HIP-HOP
SIGNIFYING DIY: PROCESS-ORIENTED AESTHETICS IN 1990s ALTERNATIVE ROCK AND HIP-HOP Brian Jones A dissertation submitted to the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of Music. Chapel Hill 2014 Approved by: Mark Katz David García Jocelyn Neal Philip Vandermeer Albin Zak © 2014 Brian Jones ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT BRIAN JONES: Signifying DIY: Process-Oriented Aesthetics in 1990s Alternative Rock and Hip-Hop (Under the direction of Mark Katz) This dissertation posits and demonstrates a framework for analyzing how sound recordings convey meaning in rock—considering how listeners experience recordings, not only as fixed products, but also as sonic evidence of implied actions. I call this framework process-oriented aesthetics, and I define it as a sensibility in which musical meaning is conveyed in a record’s sonic foregrounding of its own production process. In this sensibility, recordings sonically evoke what I call a production myth—a real or imagined backstory, nurtured through the surrounding discourse, that adds meaning to the musical sounds. Production myths encourage listeners to aestheticize practices of musical creation and help facilitate intellectual and creative engagement in listening. The effects of process-oriented aesthetics rely upon the interplay between the nuances of recorded sound and the assumed (or imagined) circumstances of their production. I investigate these aesthetic sensibilities in the music and discourse of 1990s alternative rock and hip-hop. Alternative rock in the 1990s harbored an enduring tension between the small- scale, non-commercial values of its indie roots and the music’s eventual mass-mediated popularity.

But through music, I found I could say what I was feeling.” 18 yamaha all access winter ’07 19 Blunt’s path to pop music success was an unconventional one. Before charming the world with insightful, moody ballads like “You’re Beautiful” and “Goodbye My Lover,” he served in the British Army for four years, including several months as a 22-year-old peacekeeper in Kosovo. In 2002, James left the army to face another kind of adversary: the music industry. Armed only with some “dodgy demos” showcasing his formidable songwriting talents and arresting voice, Blunt quickly found management and publishing deals, and soon crossed paths with songwriter/produc - er Linda Perry (Pink, Christina Aguilera), who signed him to her Custard label.
