MONSOON 2012 PRCS Sit-Rep 3 12-09-12 Pakistan Meteorological Department weather forecasting report, dated 12th September 2012, states that Monsoon current is penetrating into upper parts of the country upto 4000 feet. It supports the predictions of a fresh monsoon spell likely in the northern area after few days; chances of spell in northern areas have been termed as high by the Pakistan Weather Portal. Overall Monsoon is expected to withdraw from the country during the third week of September. So far, according to NDMA report of 12th September 2012, 139 people have died and 182 people got injured in the monsoon rains all over the country. PRCS is responding in Sindh, Punjab and Balochistan. In Sindh PRCS health units have already started working, in Punjab assessment teams are on the field and pre-positioned disaster preparedness stocks are being mobilized and in Balochistan teams are ready but the worst affected districts Jafferabad and Nasirabad are still inaccessible so coordination is ongoing. Background-Situation/Updated Situation The latest advisory issued by Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) on 11th September 2012 states that the Monsoon Rains in Sindh/Balochistan are subsiding rapidly. The current spell produced unprecedented rains in Southern Punjab, Sindh and eastern parts of Balochistan in last 5 days. The chief amounts of recorded rainfall in last 5 days are: Jacobabad = 481 mm, Khanpur = 291 mm, Rahim Yar Khan = 236 mm, Larkana = 215 mm, Sukkar = 206 mm, Shorkot = 152 mm, Chhor = 137 mm, Multan = 136 mm, Toba Tak Singh = 130 mm, Mithi = 121 mm, Dera Ghazi Khan = 120 mm, Badin = 108 mm, Sahiwal = 107 mm, Okara = 103 mm, Hyderabad = 90 mm, Dadu = 90 mm Weather Forecast for Next 24-Hours Scattered thunderstorm/rain is expected over Lower Sindh, Kashmir, North & Northeast Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit Baltistan. Isolated thunderstorm/rain is expected over Eastern Balochistan, South Punjab and upper Sindh RIVERS’ STATUS All the major rivers are flowing in their state of normal flow. SUMMARY OF LOSSES AND DAMAGES NDMA reports, given the current trend of monsoon rains, so far 139 people have died and 182 people got injured all over the country. They are also reporting increasing damages to agricultural land and livestock. Mostly hit districts lie on the northern side of the Indus river path and adjoining to Balochistan. So far they have treated 425 patients in 4 districts. The major diseases being treated are scabies, diarrhea, skin rashes, fever and Malaria. They are also reporting 14,357 acres of cropped area being affected as well as damages to 47 water supply schemes. (Damage report PDMA Balochistan dated 12th September 2012 1800hrs). According to the PRCS representative, due to breach in Sam canal water entered in Dera Allahyar city (Jafarabad District) and emergency has been declared at Jafarabad & Nasirabad Districts. Huge population movement has taken place, communication system is disturbed at many locations, roads and train tracks are inundated /washed away due to rains. District Disaster Management Officer Sibi reported that heavy rain continued from the past 48 hours in Tehsil Lehri of District Sibi and about 4 feet rainy water crossed through the town of Lehri/ Bakhitarabad yesterday. Heavy flood water came from Lal Shah Dam District Dera Bugti. Affected districts include: Muzaffargarh, Mianwali, Toba Taik Singh, Kamalia, Rahim Yar Khan, Hafizabad, Rajanpur and Dera Ghazi Khan. Based on the communication from PRCS Punjab Branch, Districts DG Khan and Rajhanpur have been badly affected by this spell of monsoon rains starting from 9th September. Rain floodwater developed a breach in Dera Ghazi Khan Canal, inundating a major portion of the city. Meanwhile, floodwater also entered Rajanpur district.
