The village and of Dolton is located within the administrative area of Council (TDC). It has a population of approximately 900no. residents (2011 Census). Dolton is located between the villages of (approximately 2-miles/3.2-kilometres to the north-west); Merton (approximately 5-miles/8-kilometres to the west); and Winkleigh (approximately 6.2-miles/9.9-kilometres to the south-east). The runs to the west of the village, on a north to south axis.

Dolton has a range of facilities and amenities, including (but not limited to) St. Edmunds Church, Dolton Church of primary school, a village hall, Premier convenience store with a post office (Church Street Stores), 2no. public houses (the Royal Oak and the Rams Head Inn), a traditional butcher and an electrical store.

Great Torrington (approximately 7.8-miles/12.5-kilometres to the north-west) provides a comprehensive range of facilities and amenities, including St. Michael and All Angels’ church, a primary school (Great Torrington Blue Coat Church of England primary school), a secondary school (Great Torrington School), Torrington Hospital, various business and industrial estates, a Lidl store, various banks, a range of public houses, cafes and restaurants, a range of national, regional and local shops and businesses, an arts centre (the Plough Arts Centre), a rugby club (Torrington Rugby Club), a football club (Torridgeside AFC) and a library.

Communications

Road – Cleave Hill (B3217) becomes South Street and then Rectory Road as it passes through Dolton. It connects to the A3124 at Dolton Beacon (approximately 1.2-miles/1.9-kilometres to the north-east of the village). The A3124 connects to Winkleigh and Great Torrington and thereafter the A377 via the B3220. Alternatively, the B3217 from Dolton Beacon provides routes to (via the A377), which is approximately 14.5-miles (23.3-kilometres) to the north.

Bus – Dolton is served by bus service 5b, which is operated by Stagecoach. It runs from to Barnstaple (via Great Torrington and ). There are up to 8no. services per day in each direction on weekdays.

Rail – The Tarka Line train service runs from Exeter to Barnstaple. The nearest station to Dolton is Portsmouth Arms (approximately 6.9-miles/11.1-kilometres to the north-east) which provides branch line services to Exeter Central (which has main line services to London Waterloo) and Exeter St. Davids (which has main line services to London Paddington). Tiverton Parkway (approximately 35.7-miles/57.4-kilometres to the east) also provides main line services to London Paddington.

Air – Exeter International Airport is approximately 41.3-miles (66.4-kilometres) to the south-east. The airport offers scheduled and chartered flights to a range of national and international destinations.

The proposed residential development scheme comprises 2no. 2-bed semi-detached dwellings, 1no. 3-bed detached dwelling, 1no. 4-bed detached dwelling, 1no. 4/5-bed detached dwelling and 1no. 5- bed detached dwelling.
