Z 'GRAGGEN The Australian NationaL University The Research School of Pacific Studies Department of Linguistics Canberra 1969 III PREFACE This thesis is the outcome of a period of research which began in August 1964 when I was transferred as a Missionary of the Society of the Divine Word (S.V.D.) to the Catholic Mission Station at Mugil. My linguistic aim at that time was to gain a basic idea of the nature of the Mugil language and to get an overall pic ture of the linguistic situation in the area for which I had to care as a missionary. An orienta tion trip to various parts the Bogia Sub of district and the Mlddle Ramu area was made in the second half of 1965. It was then that it became apparent to me how insufficient our linguistic knowledge of the Madang District was. Published material could be adequately understood only in the light of new field studies. Fieldwork was resumed again in January 1967 under the auspices of the Australian National University. Initially had planned to make a I descriptive and comparative study of the Mugil IV language. I did, however, not succeed in establishing a family or stock with Mugil as a member, but the survey work along the coast progressed well and was equally successful in the Ramu River area. was surprised to encounter in I the Ramu River area, typological features found along the coast. The original plan of the field trip was then given up and the rest of the time spent on establishing the boundaries of typolo�i cal features such as the indication of the subject with the verb, the prefixing or suffixing of possessive markers or object markers and oth�rs, and on collecting the necessary materials for a lexical classification the languages. -

Lean In modern technological societies we take the existence of numbers and the act of counting for granted: they occur in most everyday activities. They are regarded as being sufficiently important to warrant their occupying a substantial part of the primary school curriculum. Most of us, however, would find it difficult to answer with any authority several basic questions about number and counting. For example, how and when did numbers arise in human cultures: are they relatively recent inventions or are they an ancient feature of language? Is counting an important part of all cultures or only of some? Do all cultures count in essentially the same ways? In English, for example, we use what is known as a base 10 counting system and this is true of other European languages. Indeed our view of counting and number tends to be very much a Eurocentric one and yet the large majority the languages spoken in the world - about 4500 - are not European in nature but are the languages of the indigenous peoples of the Pacific, Africa, and the Americas. If we take these into account we obtain a quite different picture of counting systems from that of the Eurocentric view. This study, which attempts to answer these questions, is the culmination of more than twenty years on the counting systems of the indigenous and largely unwritten languages of the Pacific region and it involved extensive fieldwork as well as the consultation of published and rare unpublished sources. -

Matukar-Panau: A case study in language revitalization* Theresa Sepulveda Senior Linguistics Thesis Swarthmore College 2010 …we must do some serious rethinking of our priorities, lest linguistics go down in history as the only science that presided obliviously over the disappearance of 90% of the very field to which it is dedicated. -Michael Krauss (1992), ―The world‘s languages in crisis‖ in Language 68 (1):10 Abstract This case study in language revitalization focuses on the Oceanic language of Matukar-Panau from Papua New Guinea. Recent work on a talking dictionary of Matukar in Swarthmore College‘s Laboratory for Endangered Languages Research and Documentation as well as the development of an orthography and first book in Matukar will be evaluated in terms of the viability of Matukar in the 21st century. I will first present the sociolinguistic background of Matukar in order to examine the extent and cause of Matukar‘s endangerment. Categories will include the history, geography, government recognition of, and demography of, Matukar and Matukar villagers (Tsunoda 2005). An emphasis will be placed on the reaction of the ethnic group of Matukar villagers to the growing dominance of Tok Pisin and the corresponding language shift (Dorian 1981). Next, I will examine the language endangerment phenomenon and define language death. In order to classify Matukar on a scale of language endangerment, I will describe Michael Krauss‘s (2007) and Joshua Fishman‘s (1991) classification systems of language vitality. I will then present Matukar‘s ratings based on UNESCO‘s document on language vitality and endangerment (2003). These systems provide a quantitative way to identify the characteristics of a dying language in areas such as age of speaker population, domains of language use, and availability of written material. -

PNG’s languages, as the repositories of ethnobiological knowledge and culture, play a crucial role in biodiversity conservation. The current trends in cultural, social and economic changes in PNG are threatening the survival of languages and ethnobiological knowledge, but there are very limited studies done to assess the suspected decline of indigenous language and ethnobiological knowledge of Papua New Guinea. Using a structured questionnaire, upper secondary school students (n=4220) in 17 schools in three culturally different provinces (National Capital District, Madang and Eastern Highlands) of the country were assessed of their language skills (measured as the ability to name 24 human body parts) and ethnobiological knowledge (measured as the ability to name bird species and list traditional uses of plant species) in relation to their socio-demographic information. -
Calquing and Metatypy
CALQUING AND METATYPY Malcolm Ross The Australian National University 1. Introduction I coined the term ‘metatypy’ a decade ago in Ross (1996), a programmatic article about language contact and the comparative method. In particular, I wanted to characterise a contact phenomenon which had certainly been discussed in the literature but which I felt had not been adequately characterised or clearly distinguished from other contact phenomena. Metatypy is a diachronic process whereby the morphosyntactic constructions of one of the languages of a bilingual speech community are restructured on the model of the constructions of the speakers’ other language. I will use Weinreich’s (1963: 31) terms ‘replica language’ and ‘model language’ for the two languages. The constructions of the replica language are changed through metatypy so as to match those of the model language in meaning and morphosyntax.1 The process of metatypy was recognised by scholars long before the term was coined. The classic account concerns the situation at Kupwar, an Indian village on the Indo-Aryan/Dravidian border, where the local varieties of (Indo European) Urdu and (Dravidian) Kannada have undergone radical restructuring on the model of (Indo European) Marathi to the extent that there is morpheme- for-morpheme intertranslatability among the three varieties (Gumperz 1969, Gumperz & Wilson 1971). I have three goals in this article. The first is to deconstruct my earlier account of metatypy and show that metatypy is preceded chronologically by lexical and grammatical calquing but is separate from these processes. There are thus languages which have undergone widespread grammatical calquing but have stopped short of metatypy. -
