We begin this solemn Holy Week with the reading of the Passion of our Lord Jesus as it is found in the according to Mark. In this account we hear in graphic detail the events and suffering that Jesus endured for us. While we know his death is not the end and that that his Resurrection will soon be celebrated, we also know the hatred and violence that Monday–Wednesday, March 29–31 Jesus experienced continues in our time. Every time a life is cut Morning Mass, 8:00 AM short because of hatred or violence the whole community suffers. I pray these holy days will foster a deeper encounter with Jesus for all of us and that we will strive to celebrate these days with reverence and devotion.

While we are permitted to observe a more normal pattern of wor- ship this year, we still need to observe the protocols put in place to ensure the safety and protection of all. We still need to wear masks and observe physical distancing. There will be no proces- sions, washing of feet, or physical contact with the cross for adora- tion. There will be no service of light and the holy water fonts re- main empty. Yet, we are permitted to gather as a Church, both in person and virtually. God’s Word will be proclaimed and the sacra- ments will be celebrated. The pandemic restrictions may alter how we celebrate these holy days and rituals, but they won’t stop us from celebrating!

As we enter into the , may you and I get a glimpse of the details of our own lives, that through the power of ’s death and Resurrection we may be renewed and transformed more and more into his likeness.

Let us pray for one another, Fr. Jerry

isch–ing Lines F by Deacon Howard Fischer All throughout Mark’s Gospel disciples, bystanders, the mi- raculously cured, and even demons are commanded by Je- sus to keep silent about the wonders they have experienced. Why? Because one cannot truly understand who Jesus is until you have experienced his suffering, death and Resur- rection. Without this event that we call the Paschal Mystery, Jesus might simply be seen as a teacher, prophet and/or healer. Only with his sacrifice on the cross and his Resurrection from the dead do we encounter the truth that Jesus is the only Son of God. Thus, it is no coincidence that the Passion narrative takes up 25% of Mark, Matthew and Luke, and one-third of John’s gos- pel.

One challenge with familiar Scripture stories is that we almost instantly switch into auto-pilot mode and no longer truly listen with fresh ears and open hearts. Perhaps this is most true with the Passion narratives. Fr. Dom Grassi writes:

When it was released back in 2004, everyone seemed to be talk- ing about the movie “The Passion of the Christ.” It was an apropos title on so many levels, inciting passionate comments from many. I remember listening to an intense discussion about it when some- one who had been noticeably silent was asked his opinion. When he said that he had chosen not to see the movie, he was flooded with questions as to why. He answered quietly and simply, “I read the book. I know how the story ends.”

We enter Holy Week with the proclaiming of the Passion and death of Jesus as recounted in the . We have heard it innumerable times. We have seen numerous television and movie interpretations. Still, it remains compelling and moving. We are moved at the when Jesus shares his Body and Blood. We are saddened by deserting Jesus in the garden and angered by the high priests and Pilate and by Pe- ter’s denial. We identify with as he carries Jesus’ cross and by Joseph of ’s courage. We shudder as we hear the cold stone rolled against the entrance to the tomb.

We listen anew or we dilute the impact and meaning. We tend to gloss over the unpleasantness of the torture and execution of the Son of God because it is unbearable to conceive...especially because it is unbearable to admit that we are culpable. It is your the act of ultimate love. Until you and I embrace this insight with sin and my sin that is as much responsible for the death of Jesus our whole beings, we are not truly grasping the immense, trans- as were the fickle mob that called for his blood and the leaders forming totality of the Jesus Event. The following reflection from author Alice Camille (which demonstrated by our Savior. I’ve shared before) has always hit me over the head: You and I are not called to be passive observers but rather active “It’s become a Holy Week practice to wonder what each of us participants in the work of salvation. We must be willing to commit might have done differently, given the chance. Am I Peter, am I and sacrifice, to transform our vices into virtues, to dedicate our Judas, am I the anonymous one who runs away? At bottom, entire lives to following Christ. Without the cross, there can be no though, we’re all really : the sinner for whom the Just Resurrection. That is the message of . As much as we may resemble other characters in end with death but with eternal life! Now that’s an ending worth the story, we are all ultimately Barabbas! CATHOLIC SOCIAL TEACHING “Any human society, if it is to be well-ordered and productive, must lay down as a foundation this principle, namely, that every human being is a person, that is, his nature is endowed with intelligence and free will. Indeed, precisely because he is a person he has rights and obligations flowing directly and simultaneously from his very nature.” Pope John XXIII Check out socialjusticeresourcecenter.org for a plethora of information about and resources on social justice issues like: capitol punishment, criminal justice system, domestic abuse, economic justice, environment, healthcare, housing, human trafficking, hunger, immigration, poverty, racism, and more. ”The mission of the Social Justice Resource Center is to link faith to action by providing information and resources on the social issues of our time.”
