Children’s Divine Liturgy at Cathedral

A Children’s Divine Liturgy is held on the first Sunday of the month at the Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral of the in Philadelphia. During his on April 2, 2017, Fr. Roman Pitula spoke about how we have different choices we can make in our life. Fr. Pitula said how every power we have is from God and it depends on how we use this power. For example, Fr. Pitula held up a lighter during the homily and asked the children, “Is fire good or bad?”. The answer is both; fire can be good and bad. Fire is good if it is used to light candles or to prepare food, like when going camping. However fire is bad if we use fire to set a house on fire or light someone on fire. Fr. Pitula explained how it’s not that God created something bad; it’s about how people use what God created. If you use fire for good, it’s helpful. But if you use fire to light people on fire, then fire is bad, and you are never to do that. Fr. Pitula ended his homily saying how Jesus died on the cross for us because He loves us and He wants us to love each other and be good Christians.

Washington—Angelic voices once again echoed through the halls of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception as the seminarians of St. Josaphat Seminary continued the tradition of singing the Akathist of the Mother of God on the 5th Saturday of the Great Fast in the Byzantine Chapel. For over 10 years, the seminarians and priests have made an effort to share this treasure of the Eastern Church, the Akathist, with the Catholic University community as well as the many daily visitors to the Basilica, and the Eastern Christian Community of Washington.

The Akathist is one of the most beautiful prayers of the Eastern Church that honors the Blessed Mother. St. John Paul throughout his reign presided several times at the celebration of the Akathist of the Mother of God. Most notably during the Jubilee Year of 2000, he presided at the celebration in the Basilica of St. Mary Major on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. St. John Paul in his homily said, “Mother of the risen Lord and , Mary goes before us and leads us to genuine knowledge of God and to the encounter with the . She indicates the way to us and shows us her Son. In celebrating her with joy and gratitude, we honour the holiness of God, whose mercy has worked marvels in his humble handmaid. We greet her with the title Full of Grace and implore her intercession for all the children of the Church, which celebrates her glory with this Akathistos Hymn.”

Faithful from the Catholic University Community and the Washington Ukrainian Catholic Community pray with Fr. Robert Hitchens and the seminarians of St. Josaphat Seminary as they sing the hymn “Rejoice O Bride and Maiden ever pure.”

In response to the recent bomb threats against the Katz Jewish Community Center (JCC) in Cherry Hill Township, NJ, and others across the nation, Mayor Chuck Cahn of Cherry Hill Township started an initiative to strengthen ties with the residents and organizations of Cherry Hill in a show of solidarity against hate crime. On March 27th, 2017, Mayor Cahn released a video titled "Hate Has No Home in Cherry Hill" at a Township council meeting. This short video of 2.5 minutes in length features various A scene from the video segment residents, civic groups, and houses of worship coming showing Fr. Makar together in unity to take a stand against hate crime. Father Paul Makar, pastor of St. Michael's Ukrainian Catholic Church, Cherry Hill, NJ, was approached by representatives of the Cherry Hill Police Department to be a part of this new initiative. In the interest of building ties and developing fruitful relationships among the various residents of the Cherry Hill community, Father Paul and St. Michael's Church was filmed and made part of Mayor Cahn's public service video that appeared in many South Jersey and Philadelphia news and media outlets. We Ukrainian Catholics, at St. Michael's Cherry Hill, remember hate directed against our people (such as the Holodomor of recent memory, and the War in Ukraine) and know the fear, humiliation, and resentment that results from being hated without cause. We believe that all men are created in the image and likeness of God, and that all people are deserving of dignity and respect. We value our friendships with our diverse and various neighbors in Cherry Hill Township, and in a spirit of brotherhood, we, at St. Michael's Cherry Hill, too stand with our neighbors against hate crime.

This year, many students will be able to fill their with beautiful pysanky, rather than just plain colored eggs! Thanks to Mrs. Melanie Fedynyshyn, our librarian and a parishioner of Assumption parish for guiding students through all the steps of transforming a plain egg into a work of art.

APRIL 16, 2017 30 UKRAINIAN EASTER TRADITION

NEW OR

All the days of this week are considered as constituting one day with Easter. It is called the New Week or Bright Week for two reasons: because the whole creation is renewed by Christ, and because the catechumens who were baptized on Easter wore their white (baptismal) robes all week long. The catechumens were those who were instructed in the faith during the Great Fast in preparing to receive the Holy Mysteries (Sacraments) of initiation on Easter Sunday. The three Holy Mysteries of initiation were: Baptism, Chrismation, and the Holy Eucharist.

The joyous celebration of the Lord’s resurrection continues the entire week. The royal doors of the iconostasis are kept open the entire week to signify that Christ by His Resurrection opened the gates to heaven.

ARTOS

The Easter bread is blessed on Easter Sunday and remains on the tetrapod placed with an icon cover for all of Bright Week. It is cut and distributed to the faithful on Thomas Sunday.

PYSANKA

Pysanka is an Ukrainian . The word is derived from the Ukrainian word “pysaty,” meaning to write . The designs are written or drawn on egg with melted beeswax using an instrument called a “kystka.”

In many cultures, the egg was viewed as a source of creation. Pre-Christian peoples had used decorated eggs to welcome the sun during the spring cycle of festivals.

Written on the pysanka are symbols. The pysanka design blends ancient rituals with Christian traditions. Spring is time of rebirth: the grass turns green again, flowers bloom, and the birds sing a cheerful song.

Easter celebrates the Resurrection of our Lord. The egg symbol was likened to the tomb from which Jesus rose. (continued on next page) APRIL 16, 2017 31 UKRAINIAN EASTER TRADITION (continued from previous page)
