TERESA STAFF OF 'S PASSION RECTOR The Reverend Monsignor This Sunday, called Palm or , is the first day Kieran E. Harrington [email protected] of . Riding on a borrowed The Reverend Israel Perez colt, Jesus was hailed by the crowds as they blessed God [email protected] and shouted “Hosanna!” This event is reported in each of DEACON the four Gospels. At the Liturgy of the Word on Palm Sunday, the events of Jesus’ Deacon Fausto Duran passion are proclaimed in their entirety. In Cycle B, we read the passion [email protected] of Jesus as found in the . We will hear these events proclaimed again when we celebrate the Triduum later in the week. On Good Friday, we will DEACON/RCIA DIRECTOR read the from the . Deacon Manuel H. Quintana [email protected] In Mark’s Gospel, Jesus’ passion and death are presented as the consequence of the tension between the Jewish authorities and Jesus that had been building RELIGIOUS EDUCATION throughout his public ministry. This tension reached its breaking point when Jesus Ms. Jessica Figueroa drove the merchants and moneychangers from the Temple. After this event, the [email protected] chief priests and scribes began seeking a way to put Jesus to death, and yet, this Mrs. Brenda Donald is only the surface explanation for his death. [email protected]

Throughout this Gospel, Mark challenges the reader to consider the claim with PARISH SECRETARY which the Gospel begins: Jesus is the Son of God. When we read Mark’s account Fabiola Edmond of the passion, we begin to comprehend the deeper theological statement being [email protected] made about Jesus’ death. In Mark’s telling of the passion narrative, Jesus unders- tood his death to have been preordained, and he accepted this death in obedience ADMINISTRATOR to God’s will. Jewish Scripture is quoted only once, but there are several references Bill Slattery to the fulfillment of the Scriptures. Jesus understood his anointing in as [email protected] an anticipation of his burial, and he announced that this story would be told toge- MUSIC DIRECTOR ther with the Gospel throughout the world. Jesus predicted his betrayal by Judas Mr. Alejandro Zuleta as well as Peter’s denial. At his arrest, Jesus acknowledged that the preordained [email protected] time had arrived. Jesus was both confident and silent before his accusers. After he was sentenced to death, Jesus did not speak again until his final cry from the BULLETIN cross. The bystanders misunderstood and believed that he was calling for Elijah. Alma Ramales [email protected] The Roman centurion, however, affirmed what Mark has presented throughout this Gospel: Jesus is the Son of God. Nowhere was this revealed more fully than in his YOUNG ADULTS death on the cross. [email protected] During Holy Week, we prayerfully remember the events of Jesus’ passion and dea- th. As we meditate on the cross, we ask again and anew what it means to make the statement of faith that Jesus, in his obedient suffering and dying, revealed himself to us as God’s Son. 3 THE CO-CATHEDRAL THE CO-CATHEDRAL ST. TERESA OF AVILA OF SAINT JOSEPH OF SAINT JOSEPH WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH As we end March 2021, Women's History Month, let us honor and learn about Saint Magdalene of Canossa, who made an impact in our faith.

The history of the Church is full of many female / women Catholic saints, who received recognition for great deeds or meritorious conduct. Many lost their lives in defense of the faith, while others were themselves the mothers of important saints. Many were also honored for their contributions to the Church and their community. Wealth and privilege did nothing to prevent today’s saint from following her calling to serve Christ in the poor. Nor did the protests of her relatives, concer- ned that such work was beneath her. Born in northern Italy in 1774, Magdalen knew her mind—and spoke it. At age 15 she announced she wished to become a nun. After trying out her vocation with the cloistered Carmelites, she realized her desire was to serve the needy without restriction. For years she worked among the poor and sick in hospitals and in their homes, and also among delinquent and abandoned girls. In her mid-20s, Magdalen began offering lodging to poor girls in her own home. In time she opened a school, which offered practical training and religious ins- truction. As other women joined her in the work, the new Congregation of the Canossian Daughters of Charity—or Canossian Sisters—emerged. Over time, houses were opened throughout Italy. Members of the new religious congregation focused on the educational and spiritual needs of women. Magdalen also founded a smaller congregation for priests and brothers. Both groups continue to this day. Magdalen died in 1835. Pope John Paul II canonized her in 1988.
