Solo quando è mandato come apprendista dal poco ortodosso Padre Lucas (Anthony Hopkins) -un leggendario sacerdote che ha eseguito migliaia di esorcismi- la corazza di Michael, finalmente, comincia a cedere. Il seminarista è coinvolto in un caso inquietante che sembra perfino trascendere le capacità di Padre Lucas e inizia a intravedere un fenomeno che la scienza non riesce né a spiegare né a controllare…un male così violento e terrificante che lo costringe a mettere in dubbio tutte le sue precedenti certezze.
