ABSTRACT At least 67 domestic façades were painted in Venice by the end of the sixteenth century, often featuring illusionistic imagery depicting allegorical and mythological figures and narratives in fictive architectural spaces. Due to the iconographic flexibility and economic efficiency of the practice, scholarship has recognized its utility as a means for emerging and elite citizens to decorate their homes and “fashion” their public identities while ascribing to traditional republican values. Yet in his 1537 architectural treatise, Sebastiano Serlio accentuated the licentious potential of the painted façade, advising the painter to “not the destroy the order of the building” by “imitating reality while preserving the building’s decorum.” By linking the structural integrity of a building to its clarity of form, Serlio recognized the latent possibility of altering the meaning and reception of architecture enacted by painting on the charged support of the façade. Focusing on select remaining fragments and examining the materiality of the painted façade, particularly the relation between ornament and structure, this thesis emphasizes the pictorial simulation of -

“Not a day without a line Pigments drawn”: and painting techniques of Roman Artists Ruth Siddall 18 This paper presents a review of the current state of the study of Roman paintings using scientific and primarily microscopic techniques. Despite the wealth of available material, the scientific analysis of pigments from Roman art is in its infancy with only a small range of material published in the literature. Much of the current discussion of Roman paintings relates to the works of contemporary authors, primarily the natural historian Pliny and the architect Vitruvius, as reliable sources concerning the extent of artists’ palettes. Whilst their works do cover the standard palette, analyses have shown that there are local and regional palettes emerging. Multilayer mortars have been characterised by petrographic, mineralogical (X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive analyses and geochemical analysis (X-ray fluorescence). Additionally, radiocarbon dating of the mortar binder fraction was performed in order to establish the chronology of the building in the absence of other archaeological chronological records. The results showed that similar siliceous aggregates and lime binders were used in the fabrication of multilayer system mortars. Some multilayer wall mortars show ceramic fragments or brick powder to produce hydraulic mortars and improve the resistance to moisture. -

A Historical Review of Development of Chemical and Mineral Admixtures for Use in Stucco Plaster and Terrazzo Floor By M. Collepardi Synopsis: When the historical buildings of the Republic of Venice were erected all the construction materials and the corresponding techniques were always carefully selected. Even at that time architects were aware of the importance of the durability of buildings in a very hostile environment such as that existing in Venice characterized by permanent humid air and capillary rise of salty water from the foundations. In particular cementitious materials were adopted in agreement with the empirical rules of the Romans’ experience and adapted for the particular Venetian environment. The present paper examines two specific cementitious materials which became very popular throughout the world: the stucco plaster and the terrazzo concrete. At the time of the Republic of Venice, chemical admixtures were not available. Therefore, masonry artisans and architects developed a special know-how to manufacture durable materials. This was based on the use of mineral admixtures and natural substances, the invention of innovative binders and the development of special application techniques. After the advent of portland cement and especially of chemical admixtures, modern stucco plaster and terrazzo concrete can be produced with different (not necessarily better) properties and at higher rates of productivity. The present paper examines the microstructural aspect, the composition, the performance, and the manufacturing process of the original and modern materials.
