Lime Kilns in Worcestershire
Lime Kilns in Worcestershire Nils Wilkes Acknowledgements I first began this project in September 2012 having noticed a number of limekilns annotated on the Ordnance Survey County Series First Edition maps whilst carrying out another project for the Historic Environment Record department (HER). That there had been limekilns right across Worcestershire was not something I was aware of, particularly as the county is not regarded to be a limestone region. When I came to look for books or documents relating specifically to limeburning in Worcestershire, there were none, and this intrigued me. So, in short, this document is the result of my endeavours to gather together both documentary and physical evidence of a long forgotten industry in Worcestershire. In the course of this research I have received the help of many kind people. Firstly I wish to thank staff at the Historic Environmental Record department of the Archive and Archaeological Service for their patience and assistance in helping me develop the Limekiln Database, in particular Emma Hancox, Maggi Noke and Olly Russell. I am extremely grateful to Francesca Llewellyn for her information on Stourport and Astley; Simon Wilkinson for notes on Upton-upon-Severn; Gordon Sawyer for his enthusiasm in locating sites in Strensham; David Viner (Canal and Rivers Trust) in accessing records at Ellesmere Port; Bill Lambert (Worcester and Birmingham Canal Trust) for involving me with the Tardebigge Limekilns Project; Pat Hughes for her knowledge of the lime trade in Worcester and Valerie Goodbury -

Planning policies should identify opportunities for villages to grow and thrive, especially where this will support local services. Where there are groups of smaller settlements, development in one village may support services in a village nearby.” During the production of the South Worcestershire Development Plan (adopted 2016), Worcester City Council, Malvern Hills District Council and Wychavon District Council, the South Worcestershire Councils (SWC) in 2012 conducted a Village Facilities and Rural Transport Survey (VFRTS). It was first collected in 1693 and continued to be collected until 1963. Before 1780 Land Tax Assessments are rare but from then until 1832 duplicates of the Land Assessments had to be lodged with the Clerk of the Peace and are to be found in County Quarter Sessions records. In 1798 the tax was fixed at 4 shillings in the pound and this was made as a permanent charge on the land. The landowners were given the choice of paying 15 years of tax in a lump sum and by 1815 one third of landowners had taken this option. Worcestershire Land Tax Returns can give: Rental value of the owner’s property. Names of owners and copyholders. Names of occupiers. Names or description of property or estate. The amounts of tax levied. Those owners exonerated from paying the tax annually. -

DOVE AND PIGEON COTES IN, WORCESTERSHIRE Study by J. C. Pridham, MRTPI, MIMunE County Planning Officer County Buildings Worcester Study Team G. Gooderham, RIBA, Group Leader - Architectural and Conservation J.K. Cornelius - Photography D. Holland-Bowyer - Processing March 1974 1. Most of the buildings mentioned in this book are in private ownership . Anyone who wishes to visit them should therefore gain permission from the landowners beforehand. 2. Information about any dove or pigeon cotes not mentioned in this selection will be welcomed by the County Planner, also notice of any action which may place one in danger. Correspondence should be addressed to: County Planner, Hereford and Worcester County Council, Farrier House, Farrier Street, Worcester. The dovecotes and pigeoncotes of Worcestershire have long been an important part of the Worcestershire countryside. This has been shown by the fact that fifty are listed by the Department of the Environment as of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. However, the condition of the cotes varies from good to ruinous and although several retain their original use, many have been converted to cottages, playrooms or stores and some are unused. The Planning Officer has, therefore, prepared this illustrated report of a selection of the Worcestershire Cotes and it is hoped that perhaps with help from the County Council the great majority will be preserved. Where a cote is deteriorating and is considered to be one of the better ones in the County, approaches are being made to the owners by the -
