2.4.2 – Student Services and Curriculum Development

Since passage of the tri-county millage, DIA educators have significantly increased K–12 services in Wayne County and continue to exceed target participation numbers for students and teachers. Field trip options have expanded in response to teachers’ requests. Professional development most often brings together K–12 educators with museum educators to design specific curriculum resources in support of teachers’ student learning outcomes. These collaboratively developed resources create experiences for students that use objects in the collection as resources for learning across the curriculum. Once these resources are designed, implemented, and adjusted if necessary, they are shared on the website for use by all teachers. http://www.dia.org/learn/learning_resources.aspx

Free Student Field Trips with Bus Transportation A total of 34,475 students participated in no-cost field trips to the DIA in 2015, exceeding the 16,000 service agreement.

Attendees were invited to develop public programs influenced by the exhibitions. Resulting community partnership programs were promoted by the DIA via social media, press release, direct mail and printed materials.

DIA Inspired: Diego and Frida

Developed to create connections between the themes of the DIA’s special exhibition, Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo in Detroit, the DIA partnered with The Ford Resource and Engagement Center and Henry Ford Centennial Library on programs that provided transportation to the DIA for lunch and a visit to the exhibition. The participants returned to their local libraries DIA studio instructors focusing on themes of for a discussion and art-making project led by identity.

DIA Inspired: See What I Say

The DIA partnered with InsideOut Literary Arts Project to create original poetry inspired by the exhibition 30 Americans. The multifaceted program included poetry performances and a literary workshop led by InsideOut Literary Arts Project instructors.

The DIA provided a two-day Visual Thinking Strategies training program to the workshop instructors to prepare them to engage students with works of art. At the workshops, which took place in the exhibition space, instructors helped tri-county high school students to look carefully at the images in 30 Americans and use their reactions as inspiration for original poetry.

Students recited their poems in Rivera Court during a performance that concluded the workshops. In addition to on site performances and workshops, InsideOut Literary Arts writers-in-residence used images from 30 Americans in classroom lessons.

30 Americans Student Discussion

Eleven high school sophomores and juniors from across the tri-county participated in a half-day, facilitated dialogue based on select artwork from 30 Americans to spark conversations about relevant contemporary issues. This diverse group of teenagers shared their perspectives on challenging topics such as the fluid nature of identity and the history of race/racism in the . The dialogues were filmed, with select portions incorporated into the exhibition’s app-based multimedia tour, alongside comments from some of artists in the show and members of the DIA’s exhibition team as a means to deepen visitors’ understanding of artworks and themes. Four videos were made from the filmed content, designed to support educators in facilitating similar conversations around issues of identity and race in their classrooms.

Scholastic Art Awards

The Detroit Film Theatre was the site for the award ceremony for the 2015 Southeastern Michigan Region of the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards competition. Staff from the museum’s Learning and Interpretation department partnered with Detroit’s College for Creative Studies (CCS) to coordinate the event, attended by approximately 2,000 students, family members, and guests over two days in celebration of students’ creativity.

Community-Group Art Making

The DIA partnered with human service agencies: Hannan House, Piquette Square, and the John Dingell Veterans Administration Hospital, to bring four sessions of art making and discussions to participants. Their work was exhibited in the DIA's education wing, and the artists spoke about their work at an opening event. Bus transportation was provided by the DIA.

Days  Wyandotte Art Fair  Metro Detroit Youth Day  Art of Resilience in Harmonie Park  Dearborn Homecoming  DPS Student Art Show at  DPTV Summer Smart Event  Quicken Loan Day

Drop in workshops at Senior Centers

The DIA tested an art-making program at Northville Senior Center, providing of five workshops that attracted 91 seniors. Lessons learned from this pilot program will be incorporated in future programs.

Healing Arts

DIA artists visited Children's Hospital of Michigan twice a week throughout the year for bedside art- making programs and an “Art in the Garden” project for patients and their families. In 2015, the program engaged more than 1,150 people in Wayne County.

Inside| Out

Page | 20 4/7/2016

Inside|Out has become the cornerstone of our engagement efforts with Wayne County communities. In 2015, 22 tri-county municipalities applied to participate in the program, exceeding last year’s total. Twenty communities were accepted, including ten that had never participated previously. To accommodate the communities, new images were added to the collection, and the DIA provided training for community volunteers to help facilitate local programming.

Wayne County Inside|Out communities: Hines Park, Osborn, Wayne State University, Grosse Ile, Detroit Community Gardens, Detroit Riverwalk and Flat Rock.

The DIA partnered with Wayne County Parks Chief of Planning and Design Elizabeth Iszler to bring Inside|Out to a 17-mile stretch of Hines Park from Livonia to Northville. Sites were chosen to highlight the park’s many amenities, including fishing docks, playscapes and scenic lookouts.

The growing interest in sustainable food sources and urban gardening inspired the DIA to partner with both Sarah Clark of Southwest Detroit Environmental Vision and Riet Schumack of Neighbors Building Brightmoor to produce an Inside|Out exhibition in Detroit community gardens. Some of these gardens contained small raised beds, such as those in Cadillac Urban Garden in an old parking lot for General Motors executives; the Brightmoor Youth Garden, where young gardeners set up a profit-sharing enterprise; and Beaverland Farm, a large farm that takes up three city blocks.

Complementary programs included a bike tour that attracted more than 80 participants. Another project, in partnership with the College for Creative Studies, focused on how gardens and public art improve the quality of life for residents in blighted neighborhoods.

Minds on Art

In 2015, four six-week sessions were held at the DIA’s Minds on Art program, a partnership with the Alzheimer’s Association of Michigan to bring individuals living with memory loss and dementia (including Alzheimer’s disease) and their care partners for gallery discussions and hands-on art making. (Participation is available to residents in the tri-county area, and the program is free of charge with transportation provided). New this past year, the DIA added seven outreach/off-site art discussions at the Alzheimer Association during winter months, giving a power point presentation with art images.

Art and Authors

Wayne County residents were invited to attend the DIA’s quarterly book discussions and to view great art. Tri-county participants discussed five art-themed books and learned about the DIA’s collection through related guided tours in the galleries. Programming was implemented, through partnerships with libraries across the area including Plymouth District Library and Canton Public Library.
