The Lebanese & Syrian
Texans One and All The Lebanese & Syrian Texans descended from those who came from the present-day areas of Lebanon and Syria number some 50,000 and have established some of the most lasting communities. Perhaps the first Syrian to come to Texas was Hadji Ali, born Orthodox and raised Moslem, who landed in Indianola in 1856. Among his shipmates were 33 camels. The Syrian was a caravaneer employed by the United States Army then experimenting with the use of camels for transportation in the Southwest. Hadji Ali stayed in Texas only a short time but did pick up a new name: Hi Jolly. He moved on to Arizona, where he lived for more than 50 years. He is buried under a small stone pyramid with an iron camel on top. Most Arabic-speaking emigrants came between 1880 and World War I. Many of the first arrivals were Christians, who abandoned their homelands because of religious persecution. Few of the earlier individuals were Moslem, but after 1945 hundreds of Moslems came as a result of military conflict in the Middle East. The first individuals and families either entered Texas through Mexico or Annie Swia Casseb with baby George and came after entering the United States at New York. Originally from the Solomon (Sr.), c. 1900— Solomon established Ottoman Empire's provinces, the immigrants were simply called “Syrians” the first supermarket (c. 1923) in San Antonio. until Lebanon became a nation in 1919. Referring to the history of the eastern Mediterranean, many of them—even today—appropriately consider themselves of Phoenician descent. -

These uprisings were attempts by the Arab peoples to over throw their governments and bring freedom and change to their societies in order to live in dignity and grace. These populist uprisings produced powerful poetry that of cuses on the corruption of Arab governments and the rampant economic social prob lems. -

Edin Muftić Homer: An Arabic portrait1 Homer is rightfully seen as the first teacher of Hellenism, the poet who educated the Greek, who in turn educated Europe. But, as is well known, Europe doesn’t have a monopoly on Greek heritage. It was also present in the Islamic tradition, where it manifested itself differently. Apart from phi- losophy, mathematics, astronomy, medicine and pharmacology, Greek poetry, even if usually not translated, was also widely read among the Arab-Islamic intellectual elite. The author analyses the extent to which Homer’s works circulated, how well known were his poetics, and the influence his verses exerted during the heyday of Classical Arab-Islamic civilization. Keywords: Homer; translation movement; Al-Biruni; arabic poetry; Al-Farabi; Averroes INTRODUCTION The Greek and Arab epic tradition have much in common. Themes of tribal enmity, invasions and plunder, abduction of women, revenge, heroism, chivalry and love feature prom- inently in both traditions. While the Greeks have Hercules, Perseus, Theseus, Odysseus, Jason or Achilles, the Arabs have ʻAntar bin Šaddād (the “Arab Achilles”), Sayf bin ī Yazan, Az-Zīr Sālim and many others. When it comes to the actual performance of poetry, similarities be- Ḏ tween the two traditions are even greater. Homeric aoidos playing his lyre has a direct coun- terpart in Arab rawin playing his rababa. The Arab wandering poet often shares the fate of his Greek colleague (Imruʼ al-Qays, arafa and Al-Aʻšá, and Abū Nuwās and Al-Mutanabbī are the most famous examples). Greek tyrants who were famous for hosting poets like Ibycus, Anacre- Ṭ on, Simonides, Bacchylides or Pindar, while expelling others like Alcaeus, have a royal counter- part in An-Nuʻmān bin al-Mun ir, the ruler of Hira. -

More specifically, this study examines the significance of Arabic to the Arab immigrant and ethnic community in Dearborn in particular, but with reference to meanings generated and associated to Arabic by non- Arabs in the same locale. Although this study addresses questions similar to research conducted on Arab Americans in light of anthropological and sociological theoretical constructs, it is, however, unique in examining education and Arabic pedagogy in Dearborn from an Arab American studies and an educational multi-cultural perspective, predicated on/and drawing from Edward Said’s critique of Orientalism, Paulo Freire’s ideas about education, and Henry Giroux’s concern with critical pedagogy. In the American mindscape, the "East" has been the theatre of the exotic, the setting of the Other from colonial times to the present. The Arab and Muslim East have been constructed to represent an opposite of American culture, values and life. -

The current cultural scene is comprised of a mainstream group and a large number of subcultural enclaves. The coexistence of these groups leads to tensions between the mainstream culture and the various subcultures, in this case, the immigrant ones. Transformation of the ethnic enclaves occurs over generations of interchange with the mainstream environment and results in specialized communities that are a hybrid of the immigrant's culture and the prevailing American one. -

B O A R D H I G H L I G H T S Highlights from the December 16, 2020 Regular Meeting(s) of the Wayne RESA Board of Education. The Board received a pre-recorded virtual student choir performance from “The Voice of Victory” of the David Ellis Academy. Introductions were made by Kenya Hildreth, School Administrator and Talana Perry, Principal of Curriculum and Instruction. Also, the Detroit Youth Choir Director, Anthony White, shared a conversation with board members. The Board received an in depth presentation regarding the work occurring to support Wayne County Special Education students during COVID-19. The presentation highlighted requirements under the law to meet the needs of students with special needs; what unique things districts are doing to meet these requirements in both virtual and adjusted school learning environments; what Wayne RESA is doing to support local districts in these efforts. Karen Howey, Assistant Superintendent of Special Education, and Lois Vaughn-Hussain, Special Education Consultant spoke to the many details.
