Maldives

This amazing collection of coral within the heart of the Indian Ocean is the closest thing to heaven on earth. The Maldives boast stunning lagoons, beautiful white sand and dazzling underwater coral gardens.

Making the Most of Your Stay

Amazing sights...

Being an island country made up of tiny atolls, it makes sense that many of the most memorable sights are water-related. The Maldives offers some of the world’s best diving, so be sure to enjoy highlights such as turtles, shipwrecks, rays and reef sharks. Another not-to-be-missed opportunity is to ride a traditional dhoni fishing boat to see the unexplored beaches of tiny, uninhabited islets, and really feel like Robinson Crusoe!

Experiences to remember...

Not only does The Maldives have wonderful beaches, there is also the vibrant local life on offer. Spend some time exploring Malé, with its colourful buildings, grand mosques and National museum. Otherwise, go island-hopping to experience authentic Maldivian villages. Enjoy the traditional Maldivian cuisine which revolves largely around fish and is often hot, spicy and flavoured with coconut – delicious and fresh.

Something to treasure forever...

If you’re looking for the perfect beachwear then this is the place to come. Look for finely woven feyli sarongs that are made in Baa Atoll and other islands; onyx ornaments; semi precious local gemstones and lacquerware; and ‘thuda kuna’ – charming Maldivian mats woven from coconut leaves and reeds.

Transfer Information

The Maldives is made up of thousands of tiny atolls scattered over a large area. Each of our are set on their own resort island, making the transfer to your island one of the best parts of your holiday. The map alongside shows the transfer option available for each resort. There are two main options:

Speedboat Transfer

The closest island to the international airport in the capital Malé will feature a speedboat transfer. These depart directly from the airport, and darting through the waves is an exciting way to travel. The view of your resort island when you arrive from the sea will be fabulous.

Seaplane Transfer

One of the highlights of a holiday in the Maldives is the opportunity to be transferred by seaplane during daylight hours from the international airport in Malé directly to your resort island. This dazzling journey combines a convenient and exciting transfer with a scenic flight over the island country of the Maldives. The view over the jewel like atolls in the azure sea is simply breathtaking, and the thrilling landing at your resort island is the perfect way to start your holiday.

Seaplane transfers are included in the price of many holidays and, if not, you may have the option to add a seaplane journey as an optional extra – see the relevant hotel pages for details.

Please note: Seaplane transfers operate during daylight hours only so it might be necessary to stay overnight in Malé on room only basis. Seaplanes are limited to 20kg luggage allowance (plus 5kg hand luggage), even if your international flight allowance is more. Fabulous Resorts

Kuredu Island Resort: Kuredu Island Resort is the home to a PADI 5-star Instructor Development Centre. Kuredu is located at the nothern tip of the Lhaviyani Atoll - an area famous in the Maldives for its abundant marine life. Kuredu provides an excellent base form which to explore over 45 dive & snorkel sites, catering for those discovering the underwater world for the first time, and those looking to push their diving and snorkelling experiences to the next level. See page 56.

Equator Village: The Addu Atoll boasts a spectrum of unspoilt colourful coral, a stunning house reef and a variety of diving such as drift, drop off, cave and deep dives. With more than 30 dive sites the boats depart morning and afternoon so there is plenty of opportunity for you to discover the local marine life such as ribbon eels, big mouth trevallies, leaf fish, huge turtles and bump head parrot fish as well as groupers and napoleon fish. One of the highlights is the ‘British Loyalty’, the largest wreck in the Maldives, this oil tanker that was torpedoed and finally sank in 1946 is popular with divers. See page 65.

Vilamendhoo: The reef around Vilamendhoo is spectacular and very close to the beach. It is a wonderful experience to see the reef and its marine life. The waters around Vilamendhoo are well known for whale sharks. You may also see white tip, grey, silvertip, nurse, guitar and zebra sharks. Hawksbill and green turtles may also be seen from time to time. Spinner dolphins are commonly seen, usually from aboard a boat because the dolphins are shy creatures. A variety of PADI Scuba courses are available. See page 57.

Chaaya Reef Ellaidhoo: Ari Atoll is listed as one of the best dive destinations of the world. Here you can meet the big fish like whale shark and manta ray, reef sharks, napoleons and turtles. The house reef of Ellaidhoo is in a channel and the dives are along the south or the north side of the island. Many PADI courses are available at the Dive School including mastering additional skills and experience in practical dives in different specialty areas like wreck diving, night diving and deep diving. See page 61.

Important Information

All of the dive schools are required to follow international safety standards, and are affiliated to organisations such as PADI, CMAS or NAUI. If you have booked either an advanced course or dive package, please ensure you take your log book and certificate with you as proof of qualification. Most dive schools require at least 30 logged dives. The cost of log book, certificate course book and other course materials are not included and should be paid direct to the dive school on successful completion of the open water course. The cost is approximately US$200 per person. Prices in the Maldives do not include transfers to and from the dive site by boat, a small fee is payable locally for this.
