The Himalayan Mountains

East west extensions -2400km

Their width varies from 400 Km in jammu and kashmir to 150 km in Arunachal Pradesh.

Longitudinal division of Himalaya

Himadri : Average height 6000m and are asymmetrical in nature and core made up of granite

Himachal : composed to altered rocks and have an average height of 3700 - 4500 meters and 50km width.

Shiwaliks : Having average height of 900 – 1100 m and width of 10-50 km.

East- West division of Himalayas

Punjab Himalayas : It lies in between indus and sutluj river

Kumaon Himalayas : It lies in between sutluj and kali river.

Nepal Himalayas : It lies in between kali and Tista river.

Assam Himalayas : It lies in between Tista and dihang river.

Northern plain

It is formed by interplay of three major river system namely Ganga , Indus and Brahmaputra along with its tributaries. It spreads over an area of 7 lakh sq km , it is about 2400 km long and 240-300 km broad. As it is formed by interplay of rivers which make it quite fertile with sufficient amount of water.

Distributaries : Splitting of rivers into numerous channels at its lower course are called distributaries.

Division of Northern plain

Punjab plain : It is the western part of the northern plain formed by indus and its tributaries.It mostly lies in Pakistan

Ganga plain : It extends between Ghaggar and Teesta river and spreads over the areas of , Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and partly Jharkhand and West Bengal.

Bhabhar : The river after descending from the mountain deposits pebbles in a narrow belt of about 8-16 km lying parallel to shiwaliks.

Terai : Streams disappears in the bhabhar belt and remerges and create a wet, swampy and Marshy region called Terai.

Bhangar : It consists of the older alluviam that are brought by river and are found away from the coast.

Khadar : It consists of newer alluviam that are brought by river and are found near to the coast.
