Software suggestions
Here are some software suggestions compiled from Global Game Jam and other sites with some of our additions. It is highly recommended that you install and try out the tools before the actual game jam. You are of course free to use any kind of software you want to; just remember that all the games made in the game jam are uploaded to GGJ site have to be under Creative Commons license*.
Programming environments

Eclipse http://www.eclipse.org/ The complete programming environment primarily intended to develop Java applications. It can however be used for development in another programming language.

Adobe Flash http://www.adobe.com/products/flash/ Flash is a multimedia platform. There is a free trial available on the website.
Box2D http://www.box2d.org/ Box2D is an open source C++ engine for simulating rigid bodies in 2D.
Construct http://www.scirra.com Open-source tool / design environment for developing games (easy as GameMaker, but technologically more).

Gamemaker http://www.yoyogames.com/make Gamemaker is a very simple, but flexible editor developed by Mark Overmars. It's 2d, but you can make fake 3d games in it.
GameSalad http://gamesalad.com/ GameSalad allow game creators to visually create games by composing actors and behaviors in to scenes. It's available for Intel based Macs. LOVE http://love2d.org/ Cross-platform framework for 2D game programming in LUA.

QuArK http://quark.sourceforge.net/ QuArK stands for Quake Army Knife and is a game editor for Quake and many other games. It can edit maps and models, import sounds and textures, create pak-files and run compilers.
SexyApp Framework http://sourceforge.net/projects/popcapframework/ Libraries for game development engine at PopCap.
Silverlight http://silverlight.net/ Microsoft Silverlight is a web application framework that provides functionalities similar to those in Adobe Flash. It is compatible with multiple web browser products used on Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X operating systems.

Unity 3d http://unity3d.com/unity/download Unity is commercial 3d editor & engine for Mac and PC. It's a medium sized editor that can function with most file-formats and can export to PC, Mac OS X, Windows 2000/XP/Vista, Apple Iphone, Nintendo Wii & webbrowsers. They offer their software for free.

All participants and all games entered for GGJ must agree to a Creative Commons, share, alter, no sell license.
