Worthy School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences, The University of New South Wales Geoffrey Clark Department of Archaeology and Natural History, The Australian National University Introduction This chapter reports the non-fish remains from 10 archaeological excavations on Viti Levu and the Lau Group, including the reanalysis of a bird-bone assemblage from Lakeba Island excavated previously by Simon Best (1984). Bone remains from Natunuku and Ugaga were uncommon and the small assemblages were misplaced during collection relocation after bushfires destroyed the ANU archaeological storage facility in 2003, and these assemblages are not considered further. Three of the non-fish faunal assemblages are from the Lau Group (Qaranipuqa, Votua, Sovanibeka), one is from the north coast of Viti Levu (Navatu 17A), and the remainder are from the southwest Viti Levu region (Malaqereqere, Tuvu, Volivoli II, Volivoli III, Qaraninoso II) and Beqa Island (Kulu). This chapter presents the non-fish fauna from the Lau Group, followed by that from Viti Levu and Beqa Island. Faunal analysis began early in Fiji, with bone remains identified at Navatu and Vuda on Viti Levu by Gifford (1951:208–213). Gifford’s excavations demonstrated that pig, dog, chicken, turtle, fruit bat and humans were consumed during the ‘early period’ of Fiji. The study of archaeofauna declined after this promising start due to the absence of prehistoric fauna in sites such as Sigatoka and Karobo (Palmer 1965; Birks 1973), and the cursory identification of bone remains at sites like Yanuca and Natunuku (Birks and Birks 1978; Davidson et al. -

Wildlife Conservation Society/University of the South Pacific/Fiji Department of Fisheries/Khaled bin Sultan Living Oceans Foundation, Suva, Fiji, 22 pp. Executive Summary This report details findings from a 24 day survey of sea cucumber resources and the status of the fishery from 10 islands (Cicia, Fulaga, Kabara, Mago, Matuku, Moala, Totoya, Tuvuca, Vanua Vatu, Vanuabalavu) in Lau Province, Fiji. The surveys were conducted by staff from the Fiji Department of Fisheries, the Institute of Applied Sciences and the Wildlife Conservation Society as part of the Khaled bin Sultan Living Oceans Foundation Global Reef Expedition between June 2 and 27, 2013. Direct in-water resource assessments were carried out using standardized protocols developed by the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) Regional Fisheries Observatory program. These data were combined with fisher perception surveys, measurements of dried bêche-de-mer processed in villages, and general observations from community discussions to assess the overall status of the fishery. Within species densities of commercially important sea cucumber species across individual islands surveyed ranged from 0 – 132.81 individuals ha-1. Densities were below SPC regional indicator values for all species except for Pearsonothuria graeffei (flowerfish). -

NFMV produced a Sustainable Harvesting Guideline for sago leaves in order to maintain its potential as a financial resource for its dependant families, but also to ensure its Nadi Airport School students with their complementary prize, continual survival. -

BIOPHYSICALLY SPECIAL, UNIQUE MARINE AREAS OF FIJI © Stuart Chape BIOPHYSICALLY SPECIAL, UNIQUE MARINE AREAS OF FIJI EFFECTIVE MANAGEMENT Marine and coastal ecosystems of the Pacific Ocean provide benefits for all people in and beyond the region. To better understand and improve the effective management of these values on the ground, Pacific Island Countries are increasingly building institutional and personal capacities for Blue Planning. But there is no need to reinvent the wheel, when learning from experiences of centuries of traditional management in Pacific Island Countries. Coupled with scientific approaches these experiences can strengthen effective management of the region’s rich natural capital, if lessons learnt are shared. The MACBIO project collaborates with national and regional stakeholders towards documenting effective approaches to sustainable marine resource management and conservation. The project encourages and supports stakeholders to share tried and tested concepts and instruments more widely throughout partner countries and the Oceania region. This report outlines the process undertaken to define and describe the special, unique marine areas of Fiji. These special, unique marine areas provide an important input to decisions about, for example, permits, licences, EIAs and where to place different types of marine protected areas, Locally-Managed Marine Area and tabu sites in Fiji. 7 Site chronology and a review of radiocarbon dates from Fiji Geoffrey Clark Archaeology and Natural History, The Australian National University Atholl Anderson Archaeology and Natural History, The Australian National University Introduction The earliest radiocarbon dates from the Central Pacific were obtained by Edward W. Gifford, on charcoal recovered from excavations at Vunda and Navatu on Viti Levu (Gifford 1951a, b), and the results were later used to outline the first culture sequence proposed for Fiji, by Roger Green (1963). Subsequent investigations by Frost (1970, 1979) and Best (1984) substantially increased the number of 14C results from the archipelago, and allowed a wider range of cultural attributes, such as settlement location, interaction pattern, subsistence economy and stone-tool types, to be age-correlated. This chapter is divided into two sections, with the first section reporting the radiocarbon and thermoluminescence dates obtained by the Early Prehistory of Fiji project (the EPF) between 1996 and 2000. There were 68 radiocarbon determinations from 13 prehistoric sites. Most dated deposits were from coastal or near-coast locations on Viti Levu (n=9), two sites were from Beqa Island, and two excavations were on Mago Island in the Lau Group. Six sites contained ceramics of Lapita style (some mixed with pottery of post-Lapita age), two sites had deposits of mid-sequence antiquity, and five sites had pottery and other items common in late-prehistoric sites dating to the last millennium. Results were used to construct a chronology for each site by assessing the reliability of each determination. In several deposits, the age of the oldest cultural remains was not able to be determined with radiocarbon because of extensive reworking of Lapita remains with more recent cultural materials. -

Its subject is the settlement of the diverse environments in this isolated quarter of the globe by peoples who have maintained their discrete and traditional ways of life into the recent recorded or remembered past and at times into the observable present. Since the beginning of the series, the basic colour on the spine and cover has distinguished the regional distribution of topics as follows: ochre for Australia, green for New Guinea, red for South-East Asia and blue for the Pacific Islands. From 2001, issues with a gold spine will include conference proceedings, edited papers and monographs which in topic or desired format do not fit easily within the original arrangements. Beachrock occurs frequently on the beaches in the zone between mean and high tide levels on most of the islands. They date to the last 4200 years. The present sea level has produced distinct shore marks in the form of under-cut notches, rock-cut platforms and sea-caves in the bedrock, as well as sand accumulations with a clear mean high Ages were determined by 17 C14-dates. A +70cm higher sea level was observed, sampled and dated at AD 1530-1673. It was followed by tide level (HTL). The fieldwork was concentrated in 10 sites. Elevation was measured with a high-precision instrument with respect to HTL. tide level (LTL). Then sea level rose again to its present position, or slightly above, a level, which remained fairly constant over the last 150- 200a significant years.
