Are there not hysterical symptoms which, though co-determined by the sexual complex, are predominantly conditioned by a sublimation or by a non-sexual complex (profession, job, etc.)? (Letter 39J)2' Jung's cautious question to Freud in a certain sense reformulates the stake of their longstanding dialogue such as it takes shape in exemplary manner in their correspondence: how sexual is the libido? Can you sustain your (Freud’s) constantly reaffirmed commitment to the sexual character of the libido? Nevertheless, in contrast with what the passage just cited might lead one to suspect, the stake of the discussions between Freud and Jung was not the sexual aetiology of the neuroses so much as that of the psychoses. In this connection, Jung was for Freud a privileged if not dreamed-of discussion partner. Jung not only provided the clinical experience that Freud lacked in the field of the psychoses, but at the same time brought him and psycho analysis into contact with and made them acceptable to, the official German psychiatry of the day. -

On the Postmodern Condition
1 Journal of Undergraduate Research and Scholarly Works Volume 7 December 2020 On the Postmodern Condition Sean Carroll Abstract University of Texas at San Antonio As a cultural movement, Postmodernism begun to solidify itself since the 1970s. Despite what some may say of its necessarily unstructured nature, coherent reflection about it is useful. While there is a growing literature on this topic, the present study, as suggested by David Harvey, seeks to use an historical, materialist framework, as developed by Karl Marx, to interpret postmodern culture. To do this, I began with the studies of the substructures of postmodern culture (political-economic and material conditions), and then sought to find reflective cohesion among its ‘aesthetic’ superstructures (social, philosophical, cinematic, literary, and musical) and their underlying conditions. As a result, from these studies, I found that the aesthetic sentiments of postmodern culture quite neatly map onto the material conditions, which inform its context. These sentiments imply a complicit disposition towards many aspects of late capitalism (such as consumerism and alienation). These findings are significant because it forces postmodernism to take a more honest look at itself, and become self-aware of its implications. My findings imply that if postmodern sentiments truly want to harbor an activism toward the status quo, it must first realign itself with more unifying attitudes. While a single resolution has yet to be concluded, the present study provides some general directions -

Norman O. Brown, 1913–2002
OBITUARY Norman O. Brown, 1913–2002 orman O. Brown was born in New Mexico in 1913 and educated at Balliol College, Oxford, and at the University of Wisconsin. His tutor at Oxford was NIsaiah Berlin. A product of the 1930s, Brown was active in left-wing politics – for example, in the 1948 Henry Wallace presidential campaign – and his work belongs within the history of Marxist, as well as psychoanalytic, thought. During World War II, he worked in the Office of Strategic Services, where his supervisor was Carl Schorske and his colleagues included Herbert Marcuse and Franz Neumann. Marcuse urged Brown to read Freud, leading, in 1959, to Brownʼs most memorable work, Life Against Death. Brown taught Classics at Wesleyan University and was a member of the History of Consciousness Department at the University of California at Santa Cruz. Although Life Against Death made him an icon of the New Left, he successfully eschewed publicity, insisting to the end on his primary identity as teacher. There is still no better introduction to Life Against Death than the one that Brown wrote in 1959. The book was inspired, he explained, by a felt ʻneed to reappraise the nature and destiny of manʼ. The ʻdeep study of Freudʼ was the natural means for this undertaking. His motives, Brown continued, were political in the most profound sense of the term: ʻInheriting from the Protestant tradition a conscience which insisted that intellectual work should be directed toward the relief of manʼs estate, I, like many of my generation, lived through the superannuation of the political categories which informed liberal thought and action in the 1930s.ʼ ʻThose of us who are tempera- mentally incapable of embracing the politics of sin, cynicism and despairʼ, he added, were ʻcompelled to re-examine the classic assumptions about the nature of politics and about the political character of human nature.ʼ How did it come about, at the dawn of the 1960s, that Freud appeared as the suc- cessor to a ʻsuperannuatedʼ, but not yet surpassed, Marxist project? Life Against Death addressed this question. -
Freud and Epicurean Philosophy: Revisiting Drive Theory

This article reviews Epicurean philosophy to expose Freud’s drive theory as overly quantitative and lacking a qualitative dimension. Epicurean philosophy is congruent with fundamental premises in psychoanalysis, and contributes a qualitative and quantitative theory of pleasure. Moreover, Epicurean philosophy is compatible with fundamental tenets within relational psychoanalysis, indicat- ing that drive theory is relevant—and possibly constitutive—to the relational perspective. After reviewing Epicurean philosophy, the article returns to Freud’s conceptualization of drive. Arguments are made against Freud’s hypothesis of a death drive, insofar as Freud believed that organisms are motivated by the pur- suit of pleasure in an isolated individualistic manner. The article maintains that a critical exploration of Epicureanism challenges our tendency to equate classical drive theory with material reductionism. This carries significant implications for contemporary psychoanalysis and its interpretation of the drives. International Journal of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education 2012, Volume 24, Number 1, 76-88 http://www.isetl.org/ijtlhe/ ISSN 1812-9129 Educating the Disagreeable Extravert: Narcissism, the Big Five Personality Traits, and Achievement Goal Orientation Joan Monahan Watson Virginia Tech Despite the fact that longitudinal data have been compiled over the past 30 years among undergraduate students in higher education settings regarding narcissism, the literature is devoid of empirical investigations that explore the relationships between narcissism and learning. Because the data suggest that narcissism scores are increasing each year among this population, an exploration of the relationship between narcissism and learning is timely and warranted. Sampling from university undergraduate students, this study uses the Narcissistic Personality Inventory, the Big Five Inventory, and the Achievement Goal Questionnaire to verify the known relationships between narcissism and the Big Five personality traits of extraversion and agreeableness; to verify the known relationships between the Big Five personality traits of extraversion and agreeableness and goal orientation; and to explore a previously undocumented empirical relationship between narcissism and performance goal orientation. Results of this exploratory study indicate that while narcissism does contribute to a performance goal orientation, it is not a substantial variable in determining achievement goal orientation in general. The study addresses the implications and limitations of this research in addition to areas for additional investigation. When considering those variables that impact contributes to the ambiguity of its definition and its student learning, it is often easy to overlook or empirical illusiveness. Beginning with Ellis’ otherwise discount the significance of individual (1898/2010) description of “Narcissus-like” behavior to personality and its role in the learning process. -

Marshall McLuhan, Leslie Fiedler and Norman O. Brown are the linked triad I would substitute for Jacques Lacan, Jacques Derrida and Michel Foucault, whose work belongs to ravaged postwar Europe and whose ideas transfer poorly into the Anglo- American tradition. McLuhan, Fiedler and Brown were steeped in literature, classical to modern. They understood the creative imagination, and they extended their insights into speculation about history and society. Their influence was positive and fruitful: They did not impose their system on acolytes but liberated a whole generation of students to think freely and to discover their own voices…. My argument is that the North American intellectuals, typified by McLuhan, Fiedler and Brown, achieved a new fusion of ideas—a sensory pragmatism or engagement with concrete experience, rooted in the body , and at the same time a visionary celebration of artistic metaspace—that is, the fictive realm of art, fantasy and belief projected by great poetry and prefiguring or own cyberspace. The dissertation brings together Shakespeare performance studies and the newer fields of the history of emotions and cultural emotion studies, arguing that Shakespeare’s enduring status as the playwright of human emotion makes the plays in performance critical sites of discourse about human emotion. More specifically, the dissertation charts how, since the late nineteenth century, Shakespeare performance has been implicated in an effort to understand emotion as it defines and relates to the “human” subject. The advent of scientific materialism and Darwinism involved a dethroning of emotion and its expression as a specially endowed human faculty, best evidenced by Charles Darwin’s 1871 The Expression of Emotion in Man and Animals. Shakespeare’s poetic, formal expression of the passions was seen as proof of this faculty, and nowhere better exemplified than in the tragedies and in the passionate displays of the great tragic heroes. The controversy surrounding the tragic roles of the famous Victorian actor-manager Henry Irving illustrates how the embodied, human medium of the Shakespearean stage served as valuable leverage in contemporary debates about emotion. -

Lacan’s Écrits Conference (2019) – Conference Abstracts (draft document) Badiou’s theory of a subject: with, against, and or beyond Lacan? Joseph Anderson (Duquesne University) In light of Zupančič’s consideration of Badiou’s Being and Event at the end of What IS Sex? and the recent English language translation of Badiou’s 1994-1995 Lacan seminars, it seems worth revisiting Badiou’s critical appropriation of Lacan’s thought in Logics of Worlds. Badiou positions himself with Lacan (1) against the phenomenology of Sartre and Merleau-Ponty for whom the subject is immediately given, (2) in the incorporation of “the natural body into the body conceived stigmata of the Other,” and (3) in privileging the signified body over the natural body. However, it is precisely at the moment of agreement on a theory of the “two bodies” that division arises. First, the subsumption of the human animal by language, for Lacan, makes the two bodies structurally necessary. Whereas for Badiou, the second body is not necessary but contingent upon the body’s incorporation into a truth-procedure (where body = body-of-truth). Second, Lacan writes that “the object of psychoanalysis is not man, it’s what he lacks.” Not willing to capitulate to philosophy, he goes on to add “not absolute lack, but the lack of an object.” Badiou endorses the former but takes issue with the latter as he wants to retain the category of the absolute. Badiou situates the human animal beyond speech wherein there exists the possibility of a subject’s inclusion in the creative production of life.
