Self Psychology
Year III, Winter II 2020 Self Psychology Instructors: Holly Blatman and Rafael Ornstein As a post-Freudian psychoanalytic theory, self psychology is continually undergoing changes and transformations. These changes have two major sources: The first is related to the fact that the theory as it was originally articulated by Heinz Kohut over a period of less than two decades, contained ideas the meanings of which could only become clear with time and increasing clinical experience. The best example of this is the selfobject concept: originally a purely intrapsychic concept, the concept now includes intersubjective and relational perspectives. The second major source of changes is related to the fact that there is a continuous, imperceptible influence that all psychoanalytic theories exert on each other. While each theory attempts to preserve its “purity,” discussions of clinical material reveal that analysts’ private theories (Sandler) have multiple theoretical sources. This course of eight, one and a half hour sessions can only be an overview in which we will focus on the most essential features of self psychology. We will aim for a systematic presentation recognizing that all psychoanalytic theories have to meet the criteria of inner consistency: all clinical theories are based on clinical observations (transferences) which have to be supported by a theory of development and a theory of psychopathology. CME Objective: Self-psychology is a clinically focused theory that bridges theory of development, psychopathology therapeutic process and curative action. By demonstrating knowledge of the precepts of this theory participants will be more skilled in treating a wide range of patients with a sophisticated psychoanalytic approach. -
On the Postmodern Condition
1 Journal of Undergraduate Research and Scholarly Works Volume 7 December 2020 On the Postmodern Condition Sean Carroll Abstract University of Texas at San Antonio As a cultural movement, Postmodernism begun to solidify itself since the 1970s. Despite what some may say of its necessarily unstructured nature, coherent reflection about it is useful. While there is a growing literature on this topic, the present study, as suggested by David Harvey, seeks to use an historical, materialist framework, as developed by Karl Marx, to interpret postmodern culture. To do this, I began with the studies of the substructures of postmodern culture (political-economic and material conditions), and then sought to find reflective cohesion among its ‘aesthetic’ superstructures (social, philosophical, cinematic, literary, and musical) and their underlying conditions. As a result, from these studies, I found that the aesthetic sentiments of postmodern culture quite neatly map onto the material conditions, which inform its context. These sentiments imply a complicit disposition towards many aspects of late capitalism (such as consumerism and alienation). These findings are significant because it forces postmodernism to take a more honest look at itself, and become self-aware of its implications. My findings imply that if postmodern sentiments truly want to harbor an activism toward the status quo, it must first realign itself with more unifying attitudes. While a single resolution has yet to be concluded, the present study provides some general directions -

Key to this development has been the restoration of the selfobject from psychic function to personhood with its own subjectivity upon which the patient can have and recognize an impact. Kohut’s conception of the therapeutic action of the acknowl- edging and repair of empathic failure can be expanded and enriched by relational ideas of mutual recognition, impact, complementarity, and the Third. -

Stages of Emotion: Shakespeare, Performance, and Affect in Modern Anglo-American Film and Theatre Emily Lang Madison Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy under the Executive Committee of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2020 © 2019 Emily Lang Madison All Rights Reserved Abstract Stages of Emotion: Shakespeare, Performance, and Affect in Modern Anglo-American Film and Theatre Emily Lang Madison This dissertation makes a case for the Shakespearean stage in the modern Anglo- American tradition as a distinctive laboratory for producing and navigating theories of emotion. The dissertation brings together Shakespeare performance studies and the newer fields of the history of emotions and cultural emotion studies, arguing that Shakespeare’s enduring status as the playwright of human emotion makes the plays in performance critical sites of discourse about human emotion. More specifically, the dissertation charts how, since the late nineteenth century, Shakespeare performance has been implicated in an effort to understand emotion as it defines and relates to the “human” subject. The advent of scientific materialism and Darwinism involved a dethroning of emotion and its expression as a specially endowed human faculty, best evidenced by Charles Darwin’s 1871 The Expression of Emotion in Man and Animals. Shakespeare’s poetic, formal expression of the passions was seen as proof of this faculty, and nowhere better exemplified than in the tragedies and in the passionate displays of the great tragic heroes. The controversy surrounding the tragic roles of the famous Victorian actor-manager Henry Irving illustrates how the embodied, human medium of the Shakespearean stage served as valuable leverage in contemporary debates about emotion. -

Trop and Stolorow for a very interesting paper. I am in basic sympathy with many features of the clinical approach they recommend and describe so clearly and persuasively. I see their perspective as similar and in many respects compatible with other major theoretical traditions, such as interpersonal psychoanalysis and some versions of object relations theories. Taken together, these various relational theories have provided a compelling and comprehensive alternative to the classical model of orthodox psychoanalysis. In my view, the battle against orthodoxy has been largely won; the real vitality and creativity in the field have shifted to efforts, like the present one, to develop postclassical, broadly relational approaches to mind, development, and the analytic situation. Because the battle has been won, it is now less interesting to recount the deficiencies of the classical model than to explore the subtle but quite important differences among postclassical perspectives, and that is what I intend to do in this discussion. Trop and Stolorow's paper on defense analysis in self psychology is largely a set of commentaries and conclusions drawn from a very interesting and elegantly presented case description. In what might be considered an opening transference/countertransference gambit, Alan in some sense elicits and then becomes very sensitive to, and angry about, the analyst's enthusiasm about his heterosexual activity. -

Perspective The Importance of Self-Compassion in Terms of Self Psychology Ming-Yu Claudia Wong Department of Sport, Physical Education and Health, Hong Kong Baptist University, Kowloon, Hong Kong, China; [email protected] Abstract: Self-compassion has fostered a new way to build connectedness with oneself and affirmed the importance of offering compassion to oneself. However, there have been numerous arguments about the similarity with other self-related concepts, yet they have neglected its importance in self-psychology. For instance, self-compassion could be seen as an important element in Kohut’s concept of self in illustrating the self-object and self-experience theory, thus leading to a healthy self. Additionally, the self-schemas (self-esteem and self-efficacy) have been sufficiently shown to be associating with and predicting positive psychological outcomes and have further demonstrated the positive relations with self-compassion. Self-compassion thus demonstrated that similar features have been shared among the self-schemas. Moreover, with the claim that self-compassion was more precise than self-esteem, self-compassion should be emphasized by self-psychology then to develop a new era of “true self-esteem”. “Deviating with Freud: Discussions with George Makari” 21 March 2019, Seikei University (Tokyo) Revolution in esprit français from the mid-1910s to the end of the 1930s: Three episodes1 Tomoko SATO2 I am honored to participate in the workshop on Professor George Makari’s book, Revolution in Mind (RM)3. I thank Professor Endo for giving me this opportunity. Today, I would like to discuss the “Revolution in esprit français from the 1910s to the 1930s.” The “esprit français” means the “French spirit” or “French mind.” My talk is directly inspired by Makari’s book, which consists of three parts, including “Part One: Making Freudian Theory,” “Part Two: Making the Freudians,” and “Part Three: Making Psychoanalysis.” While all three parts are quite informative and interesting, Part Three in particular caught my attention the most since it puts different events, which occurred from the mid-1910s to the end of the 1930s, in the same perspective. Indeed, this periodization allowed the author to clearly define what is at stake for the development of the psychoanalytic movement. This persuasively demonstrated how this movement, carried by Freudians, came to spread with those whom we should call psychoanalysts, rather than Freudians, to the Western world. Taking a cue from Makari’s successful demonstration, I propose examining three cases, which took place during the same period in France, in the context of chauvinistic resistance to psychoanalysis and their decline. Through this brief examination, I will attempt to respond, though indirectly, to the invitation written in the announcement of this workshop, for “re-historicization and re-evaluation of psychoanalysis as a radical ‘anti-psychology’—a persistent and daring resistance to modern institutionalizations of the human ‘mind’—in British, French, American, and Central-European contexts.” I Freud’s theoretical shifts as factors for openness Let us recall some remarks formulated in Part Three of the Revolution in Mind. -

Aikaterini Malichin* National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Faculty of Psychology, Panepistimiopolis, 15784 Ilissia, Athens, Greece and University Paris Diderot, Paris-7, Doctoral School of Research in Psychoanalysis and Psychopathology, Center of Research on Psychoanalysis, Medicine and Society (CRPMS - EA 3522), University Paris Diderot, Paris Sor- bonne Cité, F-75013, Paris, France Abstract: The spectrum of depressing affective disorder countries a crowd of clinical types and cases and summarizes various symptoms, criteria and phenomena that are not explained in their quality and their causality and that potentially are symptomic events and sentimental situations that can oscillate from the neurosis up to the psychosis. It is estimated by epidemiologic researches that the 6% of roughly general population suffers from clinically diagnosed depression. The common point of subjects that suffer or have been diagnosed with depression is the pain of existence, as a complicated emotional, psychical and physical situation, and the inhibition that this involves. The psychoanalytical clinic is based in the decoding of this pain in the particular signifying chain of each subject separately, but also through the localization of mental structure that belongs to each subject. While the depression is not a structure but a hyper- structure, but neither a symptom, it is an affective painful situation which should be treated by the clinical process in its singularity. Thus, through a concise regard of pain in the depressing situations, the pain of existence in the post- modern melancholies, the moral pain of melancholy as psychotic structure, and the intense pain of loss and mourning, presenting three clinical ex- amples, the author concludes and emphasizes the clinical and ethical importance of elaboration of subjective causality of pain and inhibition.
