DON VAN VLIET JO NOVEMBER 1911 THROUGH 19 JANUARY 1919 SAN FRANCISCO MUSEUM OF MODERN ART A SERIES OF RECENT WORK BY YOUNGER AND ESTABLISHED ARTISTS DON VAN VLIET living on a cliff overlookingthe Pacific since the early eighties amid the redwood forests and wildlife. Don Van Vliet has embraced painting with the same controlled passion that made him. as the avant-garde rock composer and performer Captain Beefheart. a cult figure of conspicuous influence and one of the genuine musical geniuses of the past twenty years. Self-trained as a painter and knowing relatively little about the history of art or the current scene, he is a modernist primitive but also an artist whose remarka ble intuitive gifts and love of nature have combined to create highly charged paintings that are at once jolting as well as lyrical. The essence ofVanVliet's sensibility is a longing for an artistic expression that is direct. intuitive, and bewitching. In the philosoph ical tradition of the eighteenth-century French writer Jean Jacques Rousseau. he is critical of the current. corrupted state of society. Seeking to reaffirmhumanity's inherent virtues like Rousseau,Van Vliet advocates embracing nature and relocating man in a position that stems from natural order rather than an imposed hierarchy. His paintings-most frequently indeterminate landscapes populated by forms of abstracted animals-are intended to effect psychological. spiritual, and magical force. In discussing his musical compositions with a critic, he also affirmed the role of the artist as wizard, saying. "You see. I don't think I do music. I think I do spells:· 1 Image-making to him seems to be an act of reassurance.

RADU AURELIAN PANAIT COMMUNICATION THROUGH MUSIC AND ITS NUANCES CASE STUDY: MAYNARD JAMES KEENAN Radu Aurelian Panait Babes-Bolyai University, Cluj, Romania Email: [email protected] Abstract This essay is an analytical and descriptive perspective on the ways in which communication can be achieved through music. I expand on this point of view by taking into account the direct (verbal) as well as the indirect communication, in the instances in which it appears in the context of music. As follows, I set out to present the genealogy of the creative process behind the American singer Maynard James Keenan, as well as the projects in which he is involved. I will take into account the appropriateness of semiotic principles on the subject at hand, as well as the different aesthetic and philosophical levels relevant to the topic. To begin with, I propose a brief introduction into Keenan's life. Next, I explore the communication and aesthetics of his lyrics in two different ways (corresponding to the main musical projects that he is part of). Finally, I highlight his relevance and influence by means of artistic and philosophical insight. Keywords: music, communication, Maynard James Keenan, semiotics, aesthetics.

The British bands changed the way rock'n'roll was played. At the same time, USA folk-singers were changing the way rock'n'roll was "consumed". The fusion of music and politics that occurred in the early 1960s had lasting effects on the very nature and purpose of rock music. Rock music became a primary vehicle for expressing dissent within the Establishment, and therefore one of the most relevant aspects of the "counterculture". Even when the political element was not predominant, rock music came to adopt a stance that was "countercultural" in nature. Rock'n'roll had been discriminated against. Protest folk-singers had been discriminated against. There was a tradition that made rock music an "underground" phenomenon by nature. The youth of the USA was still searching for an identity, the process that had begun with rock'n'roll. Underground music provided several ways to achieve that goal. Fans of underground music repudiated the passive kind of listening that was typical of pop music (humming the melodies that are played often on the radio, hailing the star that is publicized by the media) and adopted a more independent and critical judgment of music.
