Twenty to 30, the best in the town. Then there’s that elite group who can spin over 100, who are continually raising the bar, striving to be the very best. Vic Ilg, of Winnipeg, Manitoba, comes to mind. Vic spun 112 consecutive 360s at the EXPO 86 TransWorld Skateboard Championships. Then there’s Richy Carrasco from Garden Grove, California, who holds the Guinness World Record for “The most number of continuous 360 degree revolutions on a skateboard” – 142 spins, set on August 11, 2000. I know that seems unattainable, and yet the unofficial world record is 163, set way back in 1978 by Russ Howell. Is there another skater out there who will join this elite group, and perhaps even set a new record, having their name immortalized by Guinness? Now in its 62nd year of publication, Guinness World Records (formerly the Guinness Book of Records, and called the Guinness Book of World Records in the U.S.) holds a world record itself, as the best-selling copyrighted book of all time. (It’s also the most frequently stolen book from public libraries in the United States.) More than 1,000 skateboarding world records have been set over the years, from the laughable Otto the Bulldog, who recently set the record for the longest human tunnel traveled through by a dog on a skateboard, to Danny Way’s breathtaking Highest Air record, flying more than 25 feet above a quarterpipe lip.

As a gangly teenager nicknamed stickman, he pulled his shorts north of the belly button, walked school hallways holding his cherished skateboard instead of girlfriends' hands and rode every day, rain or shine. He graduated high school as a national champion and member of the Ripping Squad demonstration team with zero social life outside of skateboarding. Pictures torn out of SkateBoarder covered his bedroom wall instead of the expected Farah Fawcett bathing suit poster. Unfortunately for the teenager, his daydreams of becoming a world-famous professional skateboarder were crippled by location, location, location. California was the skateboarding epicenter and Kevin may as well have been winning contests on the dark side of the moon for all the attention Canada received. No legitimate pro had ever emerged from The Great White North. In 1978, when Kevin crushed the unofficial world record of 400 two-board 360s with an official 1,032 rotations, SkateBoarder magazine awarded him a teeny black and white photo. By 1981 there were barely any pros anywhere. The skating bubble burst and stragglers were looked upon with pity, unaware they were obsessed over a deflated loser fad. Kevin's collection of trophies failed to keep him company as he skated alone every night. Paying his own way to California contests, Kevin entered the emasculated international competitive pool as a way to motivate his skating and hang with other enthusiasts. There were so few competitors at a 1982 Del Mar Skate Ranch contest that they mashed the professionals and amateurs together.

    In late 2011, Mark Gonzales was named "Most Influential Skateboarder of All Time" by Transworld Skateboarding. The following year he was inducted into skateboarding's Hall of Fame. But accolades haven't stopped "The Gonz" from continuing to evolve, both as revolutionary skater and prolific artist. Born in South Gate, California in 1968, Gonz entered the skateboarding world at age 13, and by 16, was featured on the 1984 cover of Thrasher magazine. Along with fellow Hall of Famer Natas Kaupas, Gonz was first to skate on handrails, and first to ollie the Wallenberg set, a 19-foot long span of concrete blocks in San Francisco. "I think a lot of it has to do with that adrenaline rush, that kick that makes you feel very alive in that exact moment, and you want to do that more," says Gonz. His video parts, such as in Blind's Video Days, still stand testimony to his limitless and whimsical approach that changed skateboarding forever. Concurrent with his legendary skateboarding career, Gonz has also established himself as a contemporary artist, whose spontaneous and avant-garde visual expressions have been seen in galleries worldwide, used in Calvin Klein ad campaigns and served as graphics for his skateboard company – Krooked Skateboards. Gonz original designs have been long sought after by collectors of all walks, including Donald Trump and Sean Combs. We met up with Gonz at his private art studio in New York City to discuss the future of skateboarding and it's place in the Olympics, hear a dirty story from the filming of Away Days and receive a history lesson on skateboarding's beginnings.
