II ABSTRACT This study takes as its main objective the establishment of a historical analysis of the French group Socialism or Barbarism, active as autonomous group between 1949 and 1967 whose start dates back to the participation in the ranks of French trotskyism since 1946. The main supporting documentation to be used here will be the forty issues of the magazine published by the group between 1949 and 1965: the Revue Socialisme ou Barbarie. Providing centrality to the relations between the intellectuals studied here and Marxism as revolutionary theory, we will try to allow the study of the development of Socialism or Barbarism criticism considering the experience of Cornelius Castoriadis, Claude Lefort and Jean-François Lyotard within the group. The central hypothesis is that a fair consideration of such authors experience around the group in question involves the necessary understanding of the tensions, crises, controversies effected through their understandings related to the working class organization, the role of the intellectual and the interpretations of the totalitarian phenomenon. The study intends to show, however, how these issues intersect directly with the progressive distancing of the group with marxism as an analytical and political category, mobilizing a trajectory that moves from a critical marxism to a critique of marxism. Keywords: marxism, intellectuals, Castoriadis, Lefort, Lyotard. Agradeço imensamente à Roger Cavalheiro, Lucas Campacci, Lia Raquel, André Fabricio, Maria Franzoni, Clara Cuevas, Mateus “Bolaxa”, Alessandro Andrade, Marília Tanaka, Gabriel Augusto, Guilherme “Xinxa”, Marco Sartori, Daniella Bianchi, Felipe Bianchi, Larissa Brum, Flavia Bortolon, Lorena Brandão, Rodrigo Henrique, Jumara Pedruzzi, Valéria Bini, Daniel Mendes, e especialmente à todos os amigos da Vulvaros. • Roger Garaudy, Abbé Pierre, and the French Negationists
Simon Epstein Roger Garaudy, Abbé Pierre, and the French Negationists The Roger Garaudy affair, was the most famous of the cases of negationism in France in the 1990s. It boosted Garaudy to the rank of chief propagator of denial of the Shoah, following in the footsteps of Paul Rassinier, who made himself known in the 1950s, and Robert Faurisson, whose hour of glory came in the 1980s. In addition, the Garaudy affair marks the point of intersection between negationism and a particularly virulent anti-Zionism. For both of these reasons—its place in the history of negationism in France and its “anti-Zionist” specificity—this affair deserves to be examined in detail, in all its phases of development. Central to such an analysis is the somewhat unusual biography of the chief protagonist. Born in 1913 to a working-class family, Roger Garaudy was first tempted by Protestantism before becoming a Marxist in 1933. A teacher of philosophy at the secondary school in Albi, in the Tarn, he became an active militant in the ranks of the French Communist Party (PCF). He was arrested in September 1940 and trans- ferred to the detention camps of the Vichy regime in Southern Algeria. Elected to the French Parliament after the war, he progressed through the Communist hierarchy and became one of the intellectuals most representative of, and loyal to the PCF. Director of the Center of Marxist Studies and Research (CERM) from 1959 to 1969, he addressed himself to promoting dialogue between Marxists and Christians. He sought to prove that Communism was compatible with humanism, in compliance with the “politics of openness” advocated by Maurice Thorez, the Communist leader.

In a Paris drenched with summer sun, under circum- stances that justify the cliché about reality being stranger than fiction, I hap- pened to speak for five or six hours with an enterprising individual named Pierre Guillaume. Assuming that many of my readers have not heard of him, I had better say a few words about him. When I met him, Guillaume was run- ning a bookstore and publishing house with the interesting name La Vieille Taupe (The Old Mole). Not far from the Pantheon, the burial place of the great figures of the French republic, this institution, which opened and closed and opened again over a period of many years and now no longer exists, was the principal power base of Holocaust denial in France.1 From the late 1960s to the 1990s, Guillaume, his bookstore, and publishing house were the main focus of the activities of the Holocaust deniers. The 1970s and 1980s were their heyday, mainly by virtue of their collaboration with the Lyon literary scholar Robert Faurisson, the best known of the French Holocaust deniers, whose writings La Vieille Taupe published. As a result of that conversation, a nd t h a n k s to t he go o d of fi c e s of M r.

  • During My Sophomore Year of College, I Took a Course with Professor Herf Entitled Twentieth Century European Thought. the Course
During my sophomore year of college, I took a course with Professor Herf entitled Twentieth Century European Thought. The course surveyed the major intellectual and ideological trends of the time, discussing readings of politicians and philosophers such as Joseph Stalin, Theodore Adorno, and Friedrich Hayek. I found reading the essays of the French political Left during the postwar period most fascinating. I wrote my final term paper on the lasting impact of the French Revolution upon twentieth century interpretations of communism, as evinced by French intellectuals Raymond Aron, Jean- Paul Sartre, Maurice Merleau-Ponty, and Albert Camus. The subject matter stimulated my historical curiosity, and I knew that I wanted to further investigate the postwar French Left for my senior Honors thesis. I began my research in the summer of 2012. Professor Herf recommended I start with a historiographical survey of several respectable and established historians such as François Furet, Tony Judt, and Philippe Burrin. McKeldin’s extensive collection of French historiography allowed me to easily access these materials. A collection of essays by Raymond Aron concerning the “Jewish question” in France, published following Charles De Gaulle’s unfortunate pronouncement following the 1967 Six Day War, that the Jews were an “elite people, domineering and sure of themselves,” first introduced me to the topic of anti-Semitism in postwar France. Shortly thereafter, I became interested in the question of Holocaust denial upon reading Elhanan Yakira’s Post Zionism, Post Holocaust,. In his essay on French Holocaust denial, Yakira points to a unique aspect of French Holocaust denial: Paul Rassinier, a man of the political Left, had initiated the first wave of Holocaust denial during the 1950’s, and radical Leftists of the 1970’s beyond continued his legacy.

  • The Hidden Alliances of Noam Chomsky – Werner Cohn
1 THE AUTHOR Werner Cohn was born in Berlin and educated in New York. He currently lives in Canada and is Professor Emeritus of Sociology, University of British Columbia. His research interests have included the sociology of Jews, small political movements, and the relationship between these two. Design and layout by Frances Besner Newman Copyright 1988 by Werner Cohn 2 The Hidden Alliances of Noam Chomsky By Werner Cohn Everyone knows Noam Chomsky of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for his linguistics and his left-wing politics. But the fact that he also maintains important connections with the neo-Nazi movement of our time—that he is, in a certain sense, the most important patron of that movement—is well known only in France. Much like a bigamist who must constantly strain to keep one of his families secret from the other, Chomsky must try to keep his liberal and left-wing American public ignorant of his other, his neo-Nazi following. Chomsky has said that his contact with the neo-Nazis is strictly limited to a defense of their freedom of speech. He has said that he disagrees with the most important neo-Nazi article of faith, viz. that the Holocaust never happened. But such denials have not prevented him from prolonged and varied political collaboration with the neo-Nazi movement, from agreement with it on other key points, nor—and this has proven essential for the neo-Nazis especially in France—from using his scholarly reputation to promote and publicize the neo-Nazi groups. Avram Noam Chomsky was born in Philadelphia in 1928.

Nonetheless, it is the somewhat mysterious nature of these relations that constitute us from moment to moment, whether we judge such relations as high or low, sublime or ridiculous. Such is the real substance of any “work” declared finished. To the many people who have influenced my worldview over the years, and this work in particular, I owe a debt of which this work itself can be considered a (partial) down payment. First, I would like to thank my supervisor, Fiona Jenkins, for sticking by me and this project over the years — in particular her advice and encouragement that helped bring this work to a coherent conclusion. Thanks to Rick Kuhn and Maria Hynes for their strategic enthusiasm regarding the possibility of finishing. Thanks to Alastair Hemmens, for your help with an earlier draft, and your considerable insight into the Situationists — their strengths as much as their limits, and their continuing significance for the present. A Socialisme ou Barbarie Anthology: Autonomy, Critique, and Revolution in the Age of Bureaucratic Capitalism translated from the French and edited anonymously as a public service NOTICE The present volume is offered to readers as a public service in the hopes of encouraging reflection and action aimed at deepening, and realizing, the project of individual and collective autonomy on a worldwide basis in all its manifestations. Neither any website that would make the electronic version available nor any other distributor who may come forward in any medium is currently authorized to accept any financial remuneration for this service. David Ames Curtis (DAC)—who prepared the “beta” translation—and “the anonymous Translator/Editor” (T/E)—who has taken over this translation project when obstruction from former Socialisme ou Barbarie members Helen Arnold and Daniel Blanchard made the project untenable as a print publication that would respect the negotiated terms of signed contracts and agreements—will thus not receive, nor will DAC or T/E accept, any monetary payment or other compensation for their labor as a result of this free circulation of ideas.1 It is recommended that each user contact, by electronic mail or by other means, at least ten (10) persons or organizations, urging them to obtain a copy of the book or offering these persons or organizations gift copies. It is further recommended that each of these persons or organizations in turn make ten (10) additional contacts under the same terms and circumstances, and so on and so forth, for the purpose of furthering this nonhierarchical and disinterested “pyramid scheme” designed to spread knowledge of the group Socialisme ou Barbarie without hindrance.

  • Introduction
Notes Introduction 1. Throughout the chapters, my comments on utopia are reliant on the work of Ruth Levitas (1990; 2003; 2005; 2007; 2013). Defining utopia in a non- restrictive manner, as the desire for a better way of being, Levitas has long argued that utopianism is everywhere, across popular culture, political debates, social thought, and she has insisted on utopian analysis as an indis- pensable method (as archaeology, ontology and architecture) for the human sciences. See, in particular, Levitas (2013). 2. In 1977 Althusser (1978) declared a ‘crisis of Marxism’. See Keucheyan (2013) for an analysis of the period of Left defeat, 1977– 1993. 3. For an insightful, accessible, mordant Gramscian analysis of the various ‘Princes’ before us at this moment – anti- globalist/Occupy, nationalist, reli- gious, austerity/ re- asserted neo- liberal – see Worth (2013). 4. For proximate treatments of this current, see, for instance, el- Ojeili (2003); Prichard et al. (eds) (2012); Rubel and Crump (eds) (1987); Schecter (1994; 2007). Schecter (2007), for example, brings together a range of thinkers and traditions – Marx, Western Marxism, critical theory, syndicalism, council communism, guild socialism, anarchism, the surrealists and the situationists, Italian workerism, and Foucault and Deleuze and Guattari – drawing out ele- ments from each as a way forward for a reinvigorated Left that must combine a critique of political economy with a critique of everyday life and bio- power. 5. As just one instance of this partial quality, we might remark upon the absence from this map of ‘impossibilism’. For a discussion of impossibilism, see Coleman (1987). Similarly, guild socialism, and its major thinker G.
