Technical communicators often use visuals within the documents they are writing and formatting. Visual rhetoric goes beyond the signs used for assistance; it's everywhere. One such example is album covers. Album covers are considered cultural images, but when looked at as a product, they travel through the cultural circuit. The cultural circuit looks to bridge the gap between cultural studies and technical communication. For this paper, the Beatles' album covers were used because of the great influence the band had on both music and visuals. Through a textual analysis of three Beatles' album covers; With the Beatles, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band and The Beatles ("The White Album") and the other six top selling albums of those years (1964, 1967, and 1969, respectively), were analyzed to learn if the Beatles covers were visual examples of Mikhail Bakhtin's monoglossia, heteroglossia and polyglossia. This is important to discover since this theory is ubiquitous in society (i.e democrat vs. republican, comedy vs. tragedy), and can be applied to images as well as texts and ideologies. Living Objects: African American Puppetry Essays. 13. https://opencommons.uconn.edu/ballinst_catalogues/13 “It’s Not Easy Bein’ Green”: Greenface and the Jazzy Frog Trope by Paulette Richards Manohla Dargis, who reviewed The Princess and the Frog for The New York Times on November 25, 2009, opens by quoting the title of the 1970 lament Joe Raposo composed for Kermit the Frog: “It’s not easy being green, the heroine of The Princess and the Frog discovers.” Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, Diana Ross, and other African American performers of the 1970s took this Sesame Street standard and made it into a reflection on black experience and identity. Louisiana poet Jericho Brown’s poem “Letter to Kermit from the Swamp” extends this reflection. “But to judge from how this polished, hand-drawn movie addresses, or rather strenuously avoids, race,” Dargis continues, “it is a lot more difficult to be black, particularly in a Disney animated feature.” Many of the reader responses rejected Dargis’s comments as “cynical.” Yet cartoon representations of African Americans and African American cultural forms have long generated troubling images because American animation is rooted in blackface minstrelsy.

In the twentieth century, puppeteers began to explore puppetry’s capabilities, producing challenging and innovative theatrical work in a distinctly American style. Puppetry was given a stage as popular broadcasting content on the newly invented television. In this media environment, Jim Henson pioneered new techniques, becoming the most famous puppeteer in history. His success enabled him to serve his field as a spokesman and sponsor. In 1982, he established the Jim Henson Foundation, a non-profit organization to support puppetry artists. The Jim Henson Foundation is the only organization in the United States devoted to funding puppet theater and its mission reflects Jim Henson’s commitment to the community of artists who make American puppetry the vivid panorama it has become. Without the Foundation, puppetry in the United States would not be experiencing the explosion of creativity and exposure it currently enjoys. To present a picture of puppetry in the United States and Henson’s work, a brief history of puppetry in America as well as an in-depth scrutiny of Jim Henson’s career is provided.

  • Library of Congress Collection Overviews: Television and Video
    COLLECTION OVERVIEW TELEVISION AND VIDEO I. SCOPE This overview of the Library's collections deals with television and video, while motion pictures are covered separately. There is some overlap because many early television broadcasts were recorded on motion picture film. II. SIZE With passage of the Copyright Reform Act of 1976, Congress broadened the Library’s collecting mandate by founding the American Television and Radio Archives (ATRA), directing the Library to acquire and preserve for posterity television and radio broadcasts. No other archive has a governmental directive to collect, and to collect as broadly, as the Library. The collections of the Motion Picture, Broadcasting and Recorded Sound Division include approximately 350,000 television and video programs. Television programs have been acquired by the Library of Congress since 1949, primarily via copyright deposit. Approximately 14,000 of these programs are listed in a now out-of- print guide, Three Decades of Television; a catalog of television programs acquired by the Library of Congress from 1949-1979, prepared by Sarah Rouse and Katherine Loughney. III. GENERAL RESEARCH STRENGTHS The size and scope of the Library’s television and video holdings are unparalled in the United States. The vast majority of these holdings have been received as copyright deposits; MBRS continues to receive approximately 30,000 video items every year. Due to the copyright law, MBRS is particularly strong in American network and cable news and entertainment television. The Library has also actively pursued television collections. Retrospective collections include those from NBC (over 20,000 kinescope reels dating from 1947), NET/PBS (an ongoing collection now numbering more than 60,000 items), and game shows from Goodson-Todman Productions.
