Brief Description of Item An important Glasgow School Clock, 1896, designed by Margaret Macdonald (1864-1933) and Frances Macdonald (1871-1921), sponsored by Thomas Ross and Sons. The clock face with repoussé decoration depicting infants clutching at dandelions to signify the passing of time, the weights depicting owls and birds respectively. Silver, white metal and walnut. Clock face: 28.5 x 28 cms Mark of T.R. & S. Glasgow hallmarks for 1896. Condition: Good, the surface slightly rubbed commensurate with use. 2. Context Provenance. MODERNISM PRESS RELEASE VIENNA 1900 BIRTH OF MODERNISM FROM 16TH MARCH 2019 The exhibition Vienna 1900. Birth of Modernism has been conceived as the Leopold Muse- um’s new permanent presentation. It affords insights into the enormous wealth and diver- sity of this era’s artistic and intellectual achievements with all their cultural, social, political and scientific implications. Based on the collection of the Leopold Museum compiled by Ru- dolf Leopold and complemented by select loans from more than 50 private and institutional collections, the exhibition conveys the atmosphere of the former metropolis Vienna in a unique manner and highlights the sense of departure characterized by contrasts prevalent at the turn of the century. The presentation spans three floors and features some 1,300 exhibits over more than 3,000 m2 of exhibition space, presenting a singular variety of media ranging from painting, graphic art, sculpture and photography, via glass, ceramics, metals, GUSTAV KLIMT textiles, leather and jewelry, all the way to items of furniture and entire furnishings of apart- Death and Life, 1910/11, reworked in 1915/16 ments. The exhibition, whose thematic emphases are complemented by a great number of Leopold Museum, Vienna archival materials, spans the period of around 1870 to 1930. They received their training at the Glasgow School of Art and became known for their contribution to "the Glasgow Style," Scotland's answer to Continental Art nouveau and Symbolism. Although they inherited their visual vocabulary from the male-dominated language of the fin-de-siècle. they produced representations of women that differed from those made by their male colleagues. I suggest that these representations were informed by the female exper,i*nce and that they must be understood as such if we, as historians, are to discuss their art. -

The exhibition examines Klimt’s role as founder and leader of the Vienna Secession, a progressive group of artists whose work and philosophy embraced all aspects of arts and craft. It features key works from all stages of the artist’s career alongside fellow Secessionist artists such as Josef Hoffman, Carl Moll, Bruno Reiffenstein, and Koloman Moser. This pack will help educators focus on specific areas of this large-scale exhibition with suggested activities and points for discussion that can be used in the classroom and in the gallery. 1 The Vienna Secession (1897-1939) At the turn of the TTTwentiethTwentieth CenturyCentury,, the city of Vienna was one of Europe’s lleadingeading centrescentres of culture. The rising middle classes sought to free themselves from the past and explore new forms of expression in art, architecture, literature and music. The Vienna Secession was founded in 1897 by a group who had resigned from the Association of Austrian Artists, as a protest against the prevailing conservatism of the traditional Künstlerhaus . The movement represented a separation from the art of the past and the establishment of modernism in Austria. The younger generation sought to bring about a renaissance of arts and crafts, uniting architects, designers, Symbolists, Naturalists and craftsmen, from metalworkers to engravers. -

SECESSION The Vienna Secession is an exhibition space that occupies a unique position in the history of modern art, combining a contemporary, forward-looking program with a building whose architecture is an icon of the spirit of adventure around 1900. This architecture has aged well and as a result, its functionality and aesthetic elegance continue to offer excellent conditions for today’s artistic and exhibition practice. The Secession is designed to be used in many different ways, a challenge taken up by artists who engage with both the inside and the outside of the building, producing an ongoing series of specially developed artistic ideas and concepts. Artists have often engaged with both the façade and the dome composed of 3000 gold-plated iron laurel leaves. The magnificent Hauptraum (main gallery) with its glass roof, one of the very first “white cubes,” is particularly well suited for interventions on account of its flexibility. With the Grafisches Kabinett (print room) on the upper floor and the three- room gallery in the basement, this ensures a wide range of options for exhibitions. In keeping with the motto that adorns its facade—“For every time, its art. For art, its freedom.”—the Secession hosts an international program that explores current forms of artistic expression in solo and themed exhibitions. It is a sounding board for the aesthetic and critical discourses on art, culture, and society that define our era, and for the political significance accruing to them. The Secession is an important forum for young experimental art, but its concept also includes prominent, already established positions. -

Having lived at Crinan for 40 years, Macdonald’s painting is based on her intimate understanding of the landscape around her. Her knowledge of sailing informs her of approaching weather patterns, and she captures fleeting Hebridean sunshine alongside the winter squalls with equal immediacy. Peploe and Cadell’s paintings of Iona cast a long shadow in Scottish art history, yet Macdonald has established herself as a worthy heir to the tradition started at the end of the 19th century. Like Peploe and Cadell she finds delight in the juxtaposition of angular rock and white sand. Her use of the palette knife creates a dynamism and animation in each painting. She works her paint across the canvas in angular lines; her assured marks arrived at through careful elimination of aesthetic non-essentials. It is bravura painting, her means perfectly suited to capture the broken skies and raging seas in full force, with rocks transformed into cubistic patterns. For this, her third exhibition at The Scottish Gallery, she has looked at new subject matter: sketching the flora and fauna of the Galapagos where she visited in November, and the South of France where she often visits. -
