Vienna Secession Collection COLLECTORS’ EDITIONS Tel: 609-520-1669 Post Office Box 7005 [email protected] Princeton, N.J. 08543-7005 Carol S. Fruchter Catalogue 64: THE VIENNA SECESSION The Vienna Secession was one of the revolutionary artistic movements that ushered in Modernism. It was founded in 1897 and opened its Secessionist building in central Vienna the following year; the credo proclaimed on the façade translates as: “To the age its art; to art its freedom.” The progressive reach of its concepts and styles would influence fine and graphic arts, architecture, decorative and applied arts. Otto Wagner, Josef Hoffmann, Josef Maria Olbrich, Gustav Klimt, Carl Moll, Dagobert Peche, Josef Urban, Koloman Moser and others were among its innovative talents. The Wiener Werkstatte, established in 1903, was within the movement’s artistic zeit geist. This catalogue includes books, prints, ball souvenirs, periodicals, exposition and exhibition catalogues, an original textile drawing, and ephemeral material. Original material from the movement has become increasingly scarce as the importance and brilliance of its artists and designers has found widespread public recognition. 1. • Art Nouveau Ukrainian Architecture in a Global Context
Art Nouveau Ukrainian Architecture in a Global Context Author(s): Nelia Romaniuk Source: Kyiv-Mohyla Humanities Journal 6 (2019): 137–148 Published by: National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy http://kmhj.ukma.edu.ua/ Art Nouveau Ukrainian Architecture in a Global Context Nelia Romaniuk Zhytomyr National Agroecological University, Department of History Abstract The article is dedicated to Ukrainian Art Nouveau architecture, which became a unique phenomenon in the development of late nineteenth and early twentieth-century architecture. Along with the reality that architecture in Ukraine evolved as a component of the European artistic movement, a distinctive architectural style was formed, based on the development of the traditions of folk architecture and ornamentation. This style produced much innovation in the shaping, decor, and ornamentation of buildings. Significant contributions to the development of architectural modernism in Ukraine were made by Opanas Slastion, Vasyl Krychevskyi, Yevhen Serdiuk, Oleksandr Verbytskyi, Serhii Tymoshenko, Oleksandr Lushpynskyi, Ivan Levynskyi, Dmytro Diachenko, and others. Ukrainian Art Nouveau architecture was represented by five main architectural styles: modernist, folkloric, rationalist, neo-baroque, and Vienna Secession. Due to an attainment of the possibilities embodied in the constructions, developed techniques, and in the design of interior space and external features — such as walls, roofs, doors and windows, columns and balustrades — this style formed its own expressive system, which included a significant number of socially significant types of buildings (dwellings, schools, hospitals, warehouses, government buildings, places of worship). The styles of Ukrainian architectural modernism have not exhausted their potential and may yet have a continuation in contemporary architecture and that of the future.

Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106-1346 yscit5 7'0S23 Abstract Secession has been noticeably absent from International Relations theory although its role in the creation and recognition of states is clearly relevant. Traditionally, the dominant perspectives in IR have not questioned state formation and this has effectively barred secession as a topic since it cannot be thoroughly treated without looking across the inside/outside divide of state sovereignty. Secession must be placed in its historical context — as a phenomenon only possible in the modem era and only perceived as a global threat in this century. Theorists from other disciphnes who have discussed secession have rehed on a problem solving theoretical perspective which has kept them from considering secession as an outcome of problematic assumptions about identity and territory in the international system.

  • Klirnt and Schiele Stephan Kleinschuster May 6, 1997 AR592
The Evolution of Expressionism In Turn-of-the-Century Vienna: Klirnt and Schiele Stephan Kleinschuster May 6, 1997 AR592 1 1 Until 1897, Classicism in Viennese high art had served as a mimetic construct of the elite society who were both art's staunchest supporters and the purveyors of moral and philosophical values that served as it's staple of judgment. In the following years, from 1898 to 1918, were revolutions of both natures, political and philosophical. The artistic transformation from the Classicism of the Habsburg Monarchy to the expressionism of the Cafe "Nihilism" could be seen most obviously in two of Vienna's foremost artists of the time, Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele. This paper seeks to compare and contrast the works of these two artists who seem to crystallize the moral, social, political, and artistic upheaval of early Twentieth Century Vienna. It lS fitting that Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele died six months from one another, both of the Spanish influenza, and both in 1918. It is important to note that even though stylistic variables call for their ultimate contrast, they loved and admired one another, and they both stood for the values that defined Secessionism. Their proximity in philosophy makes it all the more profound to discover their differences. In Klimt came classical objectivity housed in a contemporary conceptual framework. In Schiele came the shift to brutal subjectivity that pushed the limits of this framework. Even though, as will be discussed, the similarity of the subject matter seems to remain a constant, the execution becomes the variable upon which the change becomes dependent.

  • A House in the City – in the Context of Secession Aesthetics
MaRia MaLzacheR* a hoUse in the citY – in the conteXt oF secession aesthetics DoM MieszkaLnY w MieŚcie – w kontekŚcie estetYki secesYjnej a b s t r a c t a new image of the house in the city is presented against the background of the secession aesthetics as a manifestation of new attempts, concepts and modernist trends in early 20th-century architecture and denial of the stylistic principles of jaded historical forms of art. the search for a new expression of buildings and achieve- ment of “architectural unity” indicate the dualistic challenge of creating a form os- cillating between utility and aesthetics. the means of expression of the secession aesthetics associated with the aspects of visual perception, as carriers of ideas, sym- bols and semantic connotations in the creation of new transformations of the archi- tectural urban space are analysed on the bases of selected examples: houses in cities and towns of autonomous Galicia. Poszukiwania nowego wyrazu budowli i osiągnięcia „architektonicznej jedności” ukazują dualistyczną dążność kształtowania jej formy oscylującej pomiędzy jej użytecznością a estetyką. Środki wyrazu estetyki secesyjnej związane z aspektem percepcji wizualnej, jako nośniki idei, symboli i konotacji znaczeń w kreowaniu nowej transformacji przestrzeni architektonicznej miasta, zanalizowano na wybra- nych przykładach – domów mieszkalnych ośrodków i miast autonomicznej Galicji. Słowa kluczowe: dom mieszkalny, architektura secesyjna, estetyka * PhD.
