An uncle encouraged her to study medicine and she graduated from Albert Ludwig University with a doctorate in 1929. She took academic and research positions with the University of Kiel and then the University of Leipzig, but left academia for private pediatric practice in 1932 because of rising anti-Semitism. She had already begun a career in pediatric physiology before she left Germany in 1933 after Hitler came into power. She then spent a year in England, where she worked at the East End Maternity Hospital, which served a Jewish community in an impoverished part of London. She moved to the United States in 1934 and worked at the Babies’ Hospital at the Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center in New York City. She obtained her American medical license in 1935 and, in 1937, began research on childhood obesity, the beginning of her career studying eating disorders. She became an American citizen in 1940. From 1941 to 1943 Bruch studied psychiatry at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore before returning to New York to open her own psychiatric practice and teach at Columbia University. She took a position in psychiatry at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston in 1964 and remained in Houston for the rest of her life. She died on December 15, 1984. Scope and content The Hilde Bruch, MD papers contains reprints, books, office files, patient records. The early gift of books and reprints, and the posthumous donation of books and papers have been integrated into the larger group McGovern Historical Center, Texas Medical Center Library Page 3 MS 007 Hilde Bruch, MD papers of office records, making the total size of the collection 56 cubic feet. The processor of the papers has for the most part left Dr. Bruch's own arrangement intact. The arrangement includes office files, patient records dating from the 1940's, correspondence from colleagues as well as hundreds of letters from lay persons acquainted with Dr. Bruch's work on eating disorders. There are reprints from colleagues, correspondence with publishers, family and friends. Also included is same correspondence from Dr. Bruch's family in Germany and the Netherlands, and memorabilia from her long career in America. Dr. Bruch's papers offer important insights into psychiatric trends in the second half of the twentieth century, particularly into the treatment of psycho-social illness. They also detail in the life history of an individual, the personal and cultural crises precipitated by exile from Nazi Germany, and the struggle of women for greater participation in science and medicine, both significant phenomena in the history of this century. The collection equals 56 cubic feet consisting of 84 boxes. Notes Title notes Physical condition Materials are in good condition. Immediate source of acquisition Dr. Hilde Bruch presented her papers to the McGovern Historical Collections and Research Center over a period of years; one portion, 213 reprints and nine books arrived in 1978. This collection was greatly augmented and expanded in 1983 when Dr. Bruch closed her office and gave her office files and patient records to the HRC. After her death in December 1984, her family completed the collection with their donation of some of books, reprints and journals from, her home.     Overview 2008–2020 Karina-Sirkku Kurz Karina-Sirkku Kurz is fascinated by the human body, both its physicality together with its sensorial awareness — its capacity as an object and a subject simultaneously. In her work she approaches this phenomenon and explores how people experience human form. Kurz’ photographic gaze is neither fattering nor judg­ mental but akin to an adaptive lyricism. Her images, which may carry visual perplexity, oscillate between expressions of dis­ comfort and tenderness. Photography remains her primary medium, however, be­ sides its visual delivery an underlayer of its sculptural aspects coexists. In this regard, the occasional hand­built objects and surface of the photographs reveal her work's haptic potential. When Kurz is exhibiting, she is carefully considering different printing methods and a respective type of presentation for her work, which emphasises the physicality and the materiality of every single piece. Karina-Sirkku Kurz is a German-Finnish artist and photographer. She studied in Bremen, Lahti, and Helsinki, where she earned her Master’s degree from the department of photography at Aalto University. Currently, she lives in Berlin. 2 2015–2019 SUPERNATURE The photographic work in SUPERNATURE centres on the concept of the body as a malleable, sculptural entity. In this manner, aesthetic plastic surgery serves as an important context — a highly invasive practice, which revolves around designing and restructuring one‘s physical appearance according to specifc visual ideals. How does reshaping the appearance of the body affect one‘s self­image? Additionally, how are these corporal inter­ ventions experienced — which indelibly alter internal tissue, membrane, and fesh? Kid Rex: The Inspiring True Account of a Life Salvaged from Anorexia, Despair and Dark Days in New York City (2008) by Laura Moisin is one of many recent publications touching upon the subject of eating disorders penned by and depicting the life of young upper middle class big city women. First notable books of this kind appeared around 1980, while since the beginning of this century we have been observing a steady increase in this respect, resulting in the proliferation of these personal narratives in popular culture. In accordance with the research suggesting that the incidence of eating disorders is higher in urban areas, publications of this kind all seem to refer to such environments; however, the aforementioned book could be considered special here as it portrays the deep-reaching relations between witnessing the events of September 11 attacks and the development of the disease.

Bagwell with Dr. Jessica Elfenbein HIST 300-001 Spring 2020 Hilde Bruch was a German-American researcher and psychologist most revered for her contributions to the study of eating disorders in America. Throughout her eighty years of life, Bruch helped her family escape Nazi Germany, made significant contributions to the study of obesity in children, and pioneered an innovative and rebellious approach to the treatment of anorexia nervosa in patients. The first section of this paper offers a biographical sketch of Bruch, paying special attention to her upbringing, education and life as a researcher in the early- to-mid-twentieth century. The second section of this paper highlights Bruch’s contributions to the study of eating disorders, beginning with her work in childhood obesity and finishing with her seminal work in anorexia nervosa. The third section of this paper places special emphasis on the significance of Bruch’s contributions to the study of eating disorders in America in the late- twentieth century. Hilde Bruch was born on March 11, 1904 in the town of Dülken, Germany, the third of seven children born to Hirsch and Adele Bruch. Bruch’s father was a successful cattle dealer and her mother was an active member of the Jewish community. Bruch and her six siblings were all educated in a small Jewish elementary school.
