Examination Announcement

It is the policy of the Pohnpei State Government that employment consideration shall be based on qualifications, regardless of sex, age, religion, ancestry and family. Preference shall be first given to a qualified legal resident of Pohnpei and second preference shall be given to other citizen of the Federated States of of for other countries for which no qualified legal residents of Pohnpei are available

Position & Salary: Police Sergeant PL-15/1 $370.24 bw + COLA

This is the minimum salary rate at step one of the grade. Higher steps not to exceed step four (4) may be authorized in cases of hard-to-fill positions where it is appropriate to the qualifications of the appointee.

Examples of Duties: (Illustrative Only)

Supervises and participates in the activities of a detective unit in the state police force. Assigns detectives to conduct criminal investigations on crimes reported in the specialized area. Interviews complaints, witnesses, suspects to gather information about crimes committed. Assists in evaluating and preparing complaints to be prosecuted in court. Conducts surveillance on suspected criminals. Prepares written investigation reports. Investigates cases of felonies and misdemeanors such as Homicide and Larceny. Executes arrests, search warrants, and stakeouts. Performs crime prevention activities. Renders assistance to uniformed police and fireman on urgent calls. Testifies in court as a Government witness. Discusses with parents, guardians, and teachers the handling of juvenile delinquencies. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements of Work:

Good knowledge of state and local laws and departmental rules and regulations. Good knowledge of the law with particular reference to the apprehension, arrest and prosecution of accused persons. Good knowledge of court procedures. Good knowledge of modern methods and practices of criminal investigation and identification. Ability to apply law enforcement principles, practices, methods and techniques. Ability to deal courteously but firmly with the general public. Ability to supervise the work of subordinate detectives. Ability to present clear and concise testimony in court. Ability to use firearms, radios, motor vehicles, and fire-fighting equipment. Ability to prepare accurate and informative reports.

Minimum Education & work Experience: Graduation from four (4) years College or University in Police Science or Criminal Justice plus four (4) years and police investigation work, two (2) years must be in Detective work. Successful completion of Police Supervisory Phase I and II and training through the FSM Public Safety Academy.
