B.A. CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY DOMINGUEZ HILLS, 2000 "FUNK IS ITS OWN REWARD": AN ANALYSIS OF SELECTED LYRICS IN POPULAR FUNK MUSIC OF THE 1970s Advisor: Professor Daniel 0. Black Thesis dated July 2008 This research examined popular funk music as the social and political voice of African Americans during the era of the seventies. The objective of this research was to reveal the messages found in the lyrics as they commented on the climate of the times for African Americans of that era. A content analysis method was used to study the lyrics of popular funk music. This method allowed the researcher to scrutinize the lyrics in the context of their creation. When theories on the black vernacular and its historical roles found in African-American literature and music respectively were used in tandem with content analysis, it brought to light the voice of popular funk music of the seventies. This research will be useful in terms of using popular funk music as a tool to research the history of African Americans from the seventies to the present. The research herein concludes that popular funk music lyrics espoused the sentiments of the African-American community as it utilized a culturally familiar vernacular and prose to express the evolving sociopolitical themes amid the changing conditions of the seventies era. THE SOUNDS OF LIBERATION: RESISTANCE, CULTURAL RETENTION, AND PROGRESSIVE TRADITIONS FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE IN AFRICAN AMERICAN MUSIC A Thesis Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Professional Studies by Luqman Muhammad Abdullah May 2009 © 2009 Luqman Muhammad Abdullah ABSTRACT The cultural production of music in the Black community has traditionally operated as much more than a source of entertainment. In fact, my thesis illustrates how progressive traditions for social justice in Black music have acted as a source of agency and a tool for resistance against oppression. This study also explains how the music of African Americans has served as a primary mechanism for disseminating their cultural legacy. I have selected four Black artists who exhibit the aforementioned principles in their musical production. Bernice Johnson Reagon, John Coltrane, Curtis Mayfield and Gil Scott-Heron comprise the talented cadre of musicians that exemplify the progressive Black musical tradition for social justice in their respective genres of gospel, jazz, soul and spoken word. The methods utilized for my study include a socio-historical account of the origins of Black music, an overview of the artists’ careers, and a lyrical analysis of selected songs created by each of the artists. This study will contribute to the body of literature surrounding the progressive roles, functions and utilities of African American music. JOMEC Journal Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies No Way as Way: Towards a Poetics of Martial Arts Cinema Kyle Barrowman The University of Chicago Email: [email protected] Keywords Martial Arts Film Studies Cultural Studies Theory Post-Theory Poetics Abstract This essay explores the history and evolution of academic film studies, focusing in particular on the development of an admirably interdisciplinary branch of inquiry dedicated to exploring martial arts cinema. Beginning with the clash between the auteur theory and the development of a psycholinguistic model of film theory upon film studies’ academic entrenchment and political engagement in the 1960s and 1970s, this essay continues past the Historical Turn in the 1970s and 1980s into the Post-Theory era in the 1990s and beyond, by which time studies of martial arts cinema, thanks in large part to the ‘cultural studies intervention’, began to attract scholars from various academic disciplines, most notably cultural studies. At once diagnostic and prescriptive, this essay seeks to historically contextualize the different modes of thinking that have informed past engagements with the cinema in general while also offering a polemical meta- criticism of exemplars in an effort to highlight deficiencies in the current interpretive orthodoxy informing contemporary engagements with martial arts cinema in particular. This essay endeavors to find a way to allow the larger enterprise of ‘Martial Arts Studies’ to compliment, rather than colonize and cannibalize, the study of martial arts cinema, and this polemic offers as a model for scholars both in and out of film studies a ‘poetics of martial arts cinema’ committed to dialectical, ‘alterdisciplinary’ scholarship. -

The collection documents the span of O'Toole's nearly sixty-year career on stage and screen as well as the research and writing process for his two-volume autobiographical work Loitering with Intent. Dr. Todd Boyd CTCS 564 – The Blaxploitation Era (Fall 2019) Wednesdays 1-3:50 PM (SCA 216) / 4-6:50 PM (Screening in SCA 112) Dr. Boyd ([email protected]) Office Hours: Wednesday/Thursday 12:00-12:45 (Office hours appointments are to be made through the Cinema and Media Studies office: [email protected]/213-740-3334) COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course will explore the often misunderstood, highly contested, yet no doubt compelling and influential urban film movement from the 1970s commonly known as Blaxploitation (“Black Exploitation”). Beginning in the late 1960s, focusing on the historic success of iconic actor Sidney Poitier and the emergence of the ideology often referred to as “black power,” the course will chart the changes taking place in Hollywood and in American society that eventually lead to the birth of a new style of black cinema in the 1970s. From here, the course will focus on a number of significant films that come to define the genre in question during the period immediately following the landmark Civil Rights movement of the 1960s. The course will study the films in question as an opportunity to gain a broader understanding of the historical, political, social, cultural, and stylistic issues that defined America during a significant transitional period, roughly from the late 1960s through the late 1970s. In addition, the course will connect the films to other examples of 1970s popular culture (music, sports, television, comedy) in the interest of defining the period as an overall era. Finally, the course will analyze the resurgence of Blaxploitation beginning in the late 1980s and its influence on contemporary popular culture. -

JOMEC Journal Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies Enter the 2-Disc Platinum Edition: Bruce Lee and Post-DVD Textuality Leon Hunt Brunel University Email: [email protected] Keywords Bruce Lee DVD textuality DVD extras The Big Boss Game of Death Abstract Bruce Lee’s films have moved across not only cultural boundaries, but also different media platforms – film, television, video and an assortment of digital media. DVD and Blu- ray don’t just facilitate ownership of optimum and definitive versions of texts, but also re- define textuality through their secondary materials. As Barbara Klinger argues, ‘DVD acts as an ambassador of context, entering the home complete with its own armada of discourses meant to influence reception, including behind-the-scenes industry information and commentary tracks’. In the case of a culturally contested figure like Bruce Lee, such an armada of discourses might be particularly worthy of study. Moreover, DVD introduces new criteria for determining what makes a ‘perfect DVD movie’, by making use of the audio-visual ‘perfection’ facilitated by the medium or presenting particularly impressive arrays of extras. Bruce Lee is perhaps not an obvious candidate for post-DVD study, compared to such formats as the TV boxed set or multi-disc extended cut of a Hollywood blockbuster. These comparatively low budget films don’t lend themselves to the audio-visual perfection expected of a high-end blockbuster movie. Moreover, most DVD versions of his films (including releases in HK and the US) have been light on extra features. Nevertheless certain releases of Lee films do raise interesting questions in the light of post-DVD debates. -

“Superfly”—Curtis Mayfield (1972) Added to the National Registry: 2018 Essay by Josiah Howard (guest post)* Album cover Label Mayfield What is there left to say about Curtis Mayfield’s seminal work “Superfly,” his soundtrack album for the 1972 Warner Bros. Pictures film? One might start by stating the facts. “Superfly,” a collection of nine songs written, produced and performed by Mayfield, is one of the most critically praised, politically aware, and financially successful blaxploitation cinema soundtrack albums ever made. And it’s no wonder: the album spawned two million-selling Top Ten pop and R&B hits-- “Superfly” and “Freddie’s Dead”--continued the tradition of social commentary in popular black music and served as a subversive dissonant--a counter story to the story being played out on the screen. “I was very influenced by Marvin [Gaye’s] ‘What’s Going On’ album,” Mayfield remembered years later (Gaye’s album was released the year before). “When they asked me to do ‘Superfly,’ I was worried because I thought Marvin had already covered all the social commentary and soul music bases.” He needn’t have worried. It was true that Gaye’s album was a touchstone--even broaching the topic of the environment; “Mercy, Mercy Me (The Ecology).” But it was also true that Mayfield, not Gaye, first introduced and was first credited with afro-centric, black power, “brother” songs that, as it turned out, served as the soundtrack for the Civil Rights movement. Curtis Lee Mayfield was born in Chicago, Illinois, on June 3, 1942. He grew up in the hard knocks Cabrini-Green housing projects--the incendiary backdrop for the blaxploitation favorite “Cooley High” and the African-American TV series “Good Times.” One of five children, his mother encouraged his innate musicality.
