497 KRISTIINA KALLEINEN ”Infernt är det att krig & pest så skall skilja folk & släktingar från varandra.”1 Släkten Nordenskiölds val mellan Sverige och Ryssland den här uppsatsen undersöker jag de mekanismer som ledde till att ett flertal personer ur släkten Nordenskiöld, som i slutet av 1600talet bosatt sig i Finland och senare adlats under de följande Igenerationerna, stannade kvar eller återvände till Sverige med resul tatet att släkten dog ut i Finland år 1936. Bandet till släkten och äkten skapsstrategierna, närmare bestämt giftena mellan kusiner, utgjorde viktiga faktorer. Av betydelse var också tendensen att vilja satsa på en vetenskaplig bana snarare än en karriär inom det militära. Kungens män Det var närmast en ren slump att den släktgren som ursprungligen bar namnet Norberg kom att bosätta i sig i Finland i slutet av 1600talet. I ett slag mot polackerna i juni 1605 undgick hertig Karl (senare kung Karl IX) döden tack vare att den livländske adelsmannen Henrik Wrede, som anslutit sig till de svenska trupperna, försåg honom med en häst – själv miste Wrede livet. Kung Karl IX glömde inte Henrik Wredes uppoffring: hans arvingar fick som gåva 700 daler av tullintäkterna från Åbo och Reval samt 400 gårdar i den dåvarande Borgå socken. Senare fick de motta bl.a. mer än 100 gårdar i Elimä socken, vilket i praktiken innebar att de fick skatteintäkterna från dessa gårdar. Vid den här tiden, liksom senare, var det vanligt att husbönderna skötte sin tjänst på annat håll och att godsen sköttes av förvaltare. Så var det 1. Mats Wahlberg, Sweden 1036 Landskrona, Sibirien and Jeriko Borrowed Place Names in Sweden down the Ages Mats Wahlberg Sweden Abstract Since the Middle Ages, a succession of names has been added to the place nomenclature of Sweden that have been borrowed, ready-made, from other countries. In many cases, these names have the form native to Swedish, e.g., Kina ‘China’ and Sibirien ‘Siberia’. Names borrowed in something closer to their original form have often been reshaped linguistically, once they have been incorporated into the Swedish place- name stock. Borrowed names may sometimes be examples of ‘pure name transfer’, the principal reason for their adoption being the prestige and glory associated with their original bearers. Others may have become attached to the site in question as a result of their secondary associations, e.g., Kina for a yellow house or Sibirien to refer to fields that are remote, exposed to frost or difficult to cultivate. Medieval examples of loan names of German origin are the town names Landskrona and Falkenberg and the common settlement name Rosendal (Ger. Rosenthal). In the 18th century some French and Italian names were introduced. In the 17th and 18th centuries, many smallholdings on large estates were named after foreign places associated with Sweden’s many wars, e.g., Lützen and Narva. A special group of name borrowings consists of Biblical names, e.g., Betlehem and Jerusalem. *** 1. Dynasty in the Making A New King and His 'Old' Men in Royal Ceremonies 1810-1844 MIKAEL ALM As the autumn storms momentarily subsided, former Marécbal of the French Empire and Prince of Ponte Corvo Jean Baptiste Bernadotte crossed the strait on a fleet of carefully ornamented barges, and landed on Swedish soil in Helsingborg on 20 October 1810 as the elected heir to the throne.1 During the spring and summer of the preceding year, the political face of Sweden had changed dramatically. In March — in the midst of war — the reign of Gustavian absolutism was ended by a bloodless coup d'état. King Gustav iv Adolf was formally deposed in May and subsequently deported together with the queen, his ten-year-old son, by birth heir to the throne, and three daughters. A new liberal constitution was inaugurated in June, and the deposed kings uncle, the ageing and childless Charles XIII, was proclaimed king.2 The arrival of Jean Baptiste, henceforth called Charles John, and the ensuing introduction of the new Bernadotte dynasty marked the end of these revolutionary events. The Swedish experience was not unique in a European context; this was an age of revolution, and Gustavian absolutism was by no means the only ancien régime to be overthrown in the wake of the Napoleonic wars. GRANHOLM GENEALOGY Finland/Sweden Historical Wars 1 INTRODUCTION This book describes the historical times of the wars and battles when Finland was still a part of Sweden. It precedes the history of when Finland became independent, which is in the book “Finland’s Independence, the Birth” . I have not included all battles but enough to give a picture of how we have almost constantly been at war. It is also about our relatives at those times. In most cases I mention a person only once, although that person has been part of many other battles. Many of the persons are the Swedish and Finnish rulers and officers when Sweden was a major European power. The following words from the “Tales of Ensign Stål” by Runeberg illustrate the accomplishments of these heroes in the poem set to music in the “March of the Björneborgers”. The poem mentions just four battlefields. In this book I have listed many more from the First Crusade almost 900 years ago to the brief fight in 1854 at Halkokari in my hometown Gamlakarleby in Finland. “Sons of fathers brave who bled On Poland’s sand on Narva’s moor, At Leipzig, Lützen, never stinting.
