As the clock struck 6, eager attendees experienced the excite- ment that was Latino Fest 2007. Unlike preceding years, Latino Fest 2007 included several new aspects: a beauty pageant, poems, singing performances, a silent auction, a comedy show, and of course, those “hips don’t lie,” as some attendees called them, cultural dances. This was notable because the Latino Club constructed the entire event within a single month. Club members devoted time almost every day after-school, working as late as 10:00 p.m. in the last few days. “We had a really short amount of time,” Karla Ortiz, Adv. 902, said. “And the week of Latino fest was a four-day week, so we had practice everyday after school. It was very stressful and tiring. But it definitely paid off in the end.” Indeed, that is what the cheering crowd implied. How- ever, the excitement rippling through the audience could have been initiated by some other element - possibly Mr. Choto. As well as serving as the MC and host for the night, Choto also took part in the tango dance routine and hosted his own stand-up comedy show. “Jose was really charismatic and did a great job,” Jennifer Ceisel, Adv. 800, said. Others also shared Ceisel’s sentiments on Choto’s perfor- mance. “Jose stole the show. He was a really good host and pre- sented the fest very well,” Mr. Teo Gonzalez, Northside staff member and owner of Coco’s Puerto Rican Restaurant, said. Coco’s Puerto Rican Restaurant catered the event. “I just thought about stuff that people could relate to, for example the Spanglish joke,” Choto said. “The feedback from the audience was good. It helps when the audience is respon- sive and motivates you to keep going.” Zainab Bilfaqi, Adv. 804 and Gwendolyn Paris, Adv. 805, took part in the Latino Fest fashion show while Jose An equally exciting part of the show was the Taìno Dance Choto, Adv. 804, MC’ed. Are we smart? The Changing Face of Northside Test scores tell some unexpected stories by Zlatana Alibegovic It is a phrase all too familiar to Northside students: “We are the number one school in all of Illinois.” What does that really mean? In 2007, the Chicago Tribune printed a report on Il- linois school standards in which it compared the standard test results of 26 states and investigated how students in the different states compared. While the report showed a high passing rate in Illinois schools, it also showed that Il- linois has the fourth lowest passing standards. Researches concluded that of the 80 percent of students who could pass a standard math test in Illinois, only 23 percent could pass South Carolina’s standard math tests. In the same year, Illinois high school achievement exams dropped to a new low. High school juniors only passed 52.6 percent of the math, science, and reading ex- ams they took in April—an since the Prairie State Achievement Exam was first administered in 2001, according to Bruno Behrend, a commentator for 1220 WKRS. Where does Northside fit into all of these statistics? Northside remains, to date, the highest achieving high school in Illinois, with higher PSAE scores than any other school. While Northside has been at the top since 2001, there has been a greater threat on the rise. Walter Pay- ton College Preparatory High School has had dramatic increases in PSAE scores since the school first opened, in 2000. From 2005 to 2006, their scores increased by 1.5%, whereas Northside’s scores actually dropped by 0.4%. While Northside’s PSAE scores dropped overall, there were still significant gains in mathematics, where it was evident that Northside not only had more students meet- ing standards, but exceeding them, than Walter Payton did. Northside, in 2006, witnessed dropping scores across the board. Prior to that year, ACT test scores had been on an incline, rising by 1.7 points out of 36 from 2003 to 2004. Then, from 2004 to 2005, they increased by a slightly smaller margin, 1.3 points. In 2006, however, Northside’s average score declined by 0.8. The number of students accepted to Northside has increased over the past years, so the number of lower achieving students could have increased, thereby driving down ACT performance. Likewise, average AP exam results dropped. First they decreased by 0.1 points in 2005, then by 0.2 in 2006. While this may seem like a small margin, given that the AP tests are only out of 5 points, a dip of .2 points Student Council’s greater A fresh face amounts to a 4 percent decrease.
