The study focused on the subjects of Language, Culture and Identity in Wales, in the context of devolution. We hope that this visit will be valuable for participants, and that it will contribute to ongoing discussions in Turkey. DPI’s aim is to create and foster an environment in which different parties share information, ideas, knowledge and concerns connected to the development of democratic solutions and outcomes. The objective of DPI’s projects is to facilitate the operation of conflict resolution measures in conflicting societies. This is addressed through creating a platform for participants to meet with international experts, to draw upon comparative studies, as well as analyse and compare various mechanisms used to achieve positive results in similar cases. DPI’s work supports the development of a pluralistic political arena capable of generating consensus and ownership of work on key issues surrounding democratic solutions at political and local levels. DPI focuses on providing expertise, research and practical frameworks to encourage stronger public debates and involvements in promoting peace and democracy building internationally. Within this context DPI aims to contribute to the establishment 7 Language, Culture and Identity in Wales - A Comparative Study Visit Report of a structured public dialogue on peace and democratic advancement, as well as to create new and widen existing platforms for discussions on peace and democracy building. As part of DPI’s role of reaching and securing these aims, DPI focuses on supporting a public atmosphere and environment of inclusion and frank, structured discussions whereby different parties are in the position to openly share knowledge, concerns and suggestions for democracy building and strengthening across multiple levels. DPI’s objective throughout this process is to identify common priorities and develop innovative approaches to participate in and influence the process of finding democratic solutions. DPI also aims to support and strengthen collaboration between academics, civil society and policy-makers through its projects and output. Kerim Yildiz Director, Democratic Progress Institute 8 Language, Culture and Identity in Wales - A Comparative Study Visit Report Sunday 12th January – Welcome and Introduction by Yılmaz Ensaroğlu1 Yılmaz Ensaroğlu: Welcome to you all, and thank you for joining us in Wales. You probably know about the Democratic Progress Institute (DPI) already. We have conducted many visits of this kind, with participants including Members of Parliament from all main parties in Turkey, academics, civil society representatives, and others. Our visits focus on comparative experiences, so we can see how different people have handled different situations and we have benefitted from these points. Visits so far have focused on particular case studies and countries. One issue I have noticed is that during previous visits we have not focused specifically enough on one topic; they have been more general in their approach, looking at conflict resolution and democratisation for instance. This time, we have chosen to focus on language and identity issues. We have visited Wales before, but this time we will look at issues of language, culture and language in education. For us in Turkey, language and education are very political issues, in particular concerning the Kurdish language. Language seems to be a more apolitical, cultural and symbolic issue here, but we shall learn more over the coming days. He is a member of Turkey’s Wise Persons Commission established by Prime Minister Erdoğan. 9 Language, Culture and Identity in Wales - A Comparative Study Visit Report professors from different universities as well as government officials who are interested in the topic. This is how the group was formed. I will now introduce DPI’s Programme Manager Eleanor Johnson who is from Wales herself. Other friends here include İpek Kotan, our interpreter, and Esra Elmas, a Senior Advisor to DPI. We have representatives from the Turkish Economic and Social Studies Foundation (TESEV) who have written reports about the Kurdish language in Turkey. They continue to do excellent work. We have people here from universities, and also those in politics. The mix among us will provide a uniqueness to our discussions, and I look forward to our time here together. We are going to meet government officials and others during the programme. We want to learn something from their example about language and education. I personally do not know much about language, but was invited to accompany you by DPI’s Director, Kerim Yildiz, who was not able to make it. My responses on each of your points are below. Welsh Government support for businesses participating in trade missions Developing new export business requires a certain level of investment of time and money from companies. The Welsh Government contributes to this investment with both free and subsidised advice and support. Companies should not see trade missions as the first step towards exporting. Whilst they are a good way of assessing the potential opportunities in a market, they require a significant amount of advance preparation to ensure companies can maximise the benefit from their time in market. A great deal of support is available to help companies prepare for the trade missions, much of which is free or heavily subsidised. As I mentioned in Newtown, sharing the cost demonstrates a joint commitment and partnership between the company and Welsh Government. The cost of participation is substantially subsidised and, if a company is serious about exporting, then this should not be a barrier to joining a trade mission. There are three different types of intervention to take a company to market which are: Food and Drink Trade Development visits; attendance at major trade shows; and multi-sector trade visits.

Cabinet Members Need to present a new, fresh image – virtually everyone gets a new job Except Kirsty Williams, everyone has been a minister before… Further reshuffle in a year or so to bring in truly new Members? Smaller government – overall number of Ministers reduced, less pressure on Labour backbenchers Housing priorities of the Welsh Government – manifesto commitments We will deliver an extra 20,000 affordable homes in the next term.

The regeneration of Cardiff Bay is now widely regarded as one of the most successful regeneration projects in the United Kingdom.[1] The Bay is supplied by two rivers (Taff and Ely) to form a 500-acre (2.0 km2) freshwater lake round the former dockland area south of the city centre. The Bay was formerly tidal, with access to the sea limited to a couple of hours each side of high water but now provides 24 hour access through three locks[2] . History Cardiff Bay played a major part in Cardiff’s development by being the means of exporting coal from the South Wales Valleys to the rest of the world, helping to power the industrial age. The coal mining industry helped fund the building of Cardiff into the Capital city of Wales and helped the Third Marquis of Bute, who owned the docks, become the richest man in the world at the time. As Cardiff exports grew, so did its population; dockworkers and sailors from across the world settled in neighbourhoods close to the docks, known as Tiger Bay, and communities from up to 45 different nationalities, including Norwegian, Somali, Yemeni, Spanish, Italian, Caribbean and Irish helped create the unique multicultural character of the area.

They link the analysis of tourism and sport to wider public policy and economic development debates, applying economic analytical techniques to sport and leisure in a novel manner and charting the development of new tools which enhance our understanding of the economic contribution of these important activities. A number of the papers contained here focus on the extent to which sporting and leisure activity can further regional and national governments' aspirations for economic development, and at what cost. Two of the papers refine economic impact methodologies to better account for the impacts of discrete sporting and cultural events or facilities, using a high level of primary input data, and placing of the results firmly within the local economic development context.
