Once the toast of two continents, the British comedy played to packed houses for years from 1858 to 1865 until that bloody night on April 14, 1865, when John Wilkes Booth made his impromptu appearance on stage during the third act. The matinee idol and national celebrity Booth brought down the house by firing two shots from a lady’s derringer into the back of the head of President Abraham John Wilkes Booth Lincoln. Though the Presidential box hung nearly twelve feet above the stage, Booth at- tempted on a melodramatic leap, and “in his long leap to the stage...the assassin caught his foot in the Treasury Guard flag...and broke his leg” (Redway & Bracken 103). John Wilkes Booth managed to make a successful exit off stage, but his fellow Thespians were not so lucky. Harry Hawk, who played Asa Tren- chard, the American cousin, was still on stage when Booth leapt from the Presidential box. -

The time-frame has been selected for two reasons: (1) actresses active after 1870 have been the subject of several dissertations and scholarly studies, while relatively little research has been completed on women active on the American stage prior to 1870, and (2) prior to 1850 there was limited theatre activity in this country and very few professional actresses. A general description of mid-nineteenth-century theatre and its social context is provided, including a summary of major developments in theatre in New York and other cities from 1850 to 1870, discussions of the star system, the combination company, and the mid-century audience. -

"Those That Play Your Clowns:" Comic Actors and Comic Acting on the 19th Century American Stage Barnard Hewitt (Barnard Hewitt's Fellows Address was delivered at the ATA Convention in Chicago, August 16, 1977.) It seems to me that critics and historians of theatre have neglected comedians and the acting of comedy, and I ask myself why should this be so? Nearly everyone enjoys the acting of comedy. As the box office has regularly demonstrated, more people enjoy comedy than enjoy serious drama. I suspect that comedy and comedians are neglected because critics and scholars feel, no doubt unconsciously that because they arouse laughter rather than pity and fear, they don't deserve serious study. Whatever the reason for this neglect, it seems to me unjust. In choosing the subject for this paper, I thought I might do something to redress that injustice. I hoped to identify early styles of comic acting on our stage, discover their origins in England, note mutations caused by their new environment, and take note of their evolution into new styles. I don't need to tell you how difficult it is to reconstruct with confidence the acting style of any period before acting was recorded on film. One must depend on what can be learned about representative individuals: about the individual's background, early training and experience, principal roles, what he said about acting and about his roles, pictures of him in character, and reports by his contemporaries - critics and ordinary theatregoers - of what he did and how he spoke. First-hand descriptions of an actor's performance in one or more roles are far and away the most enlightening evidence, but nothing approaching Charles Clarke's detailed description of Edwin Booth's Hamlet is available for an American comic actor.1 Comedians have written little about their art.2 What evidence I found is scattered and ambiguous when it is not contradictory. -

Upper Ashuelot: a History of Keene New Hampshire
PART IX: 1856-1865 Jim Myers Circus performed on the Roxbury Street grounds dur- ing July 1856; Sands, Nathan and Company's Circus, complete with trained elephants and a steam calliope, played in July 1857 and July 1859. Wambold's Circus visited at the depot grounds near West Street in June 1861. Miss Dollie Dutton, "the smallest girl in the world," gave a series of public "levees" at Cheshire Hall in September 1861; she was 10 years old, stood 29 inches tall, and weighed only 15 pounds. Her program featured songs and spoken pieces. "Blind Tom," a talented blind Negro musician, performed in December 1865. In October 1861 a panorama, "Ancient and Modern Palestine and Scenes in the Life of Christ," was displayed at the Town Hall. These shows consisted of long paintings wound on rollers, which were un- folded slowly while a lecturer described each scene. Sara Jane Lippincott, who published popular works under the name of Grace Greenwood, was a Lyceum speaker in November 1860. Also of a cultural nature was famed French violinist Camilla Urso's concert at the Town Hall in February 1864. There was also a public demonstration of laughing gas staged at the Town Hall in May 1863. By the eve of the Civil War a number of buildings presently standing in Keene's business district had already been built, and more were soon added, replacing the older wooden structures with their out- side stairways to the second story. Between 1856 and 1859 nearly 100 new buildings went up, including many substantial residences. Cen- tral Square was fully developed, the railroad had become a local fixture, and Keene's industrial life was quickening its pace. -

The call number for the collection is PN6111.P5 © 2013 Amherst College Archives and Special Collections Page 1 Plimpton Collection of Dramas INTRODUCTION THE PLIMPTON COLLECTION OF PLAYS by Curtis Canfield Originally published in the Amherst Graduates’ Quarterly, May 1932 Mr. George A. Plimpton, ’76, recently presented to the college a large collection of material relating to the English and American theatre of the nineteenth century. More than 1200 plays are represented in the collection in addition to numerous playbills, programs, libretti, histories, and after-pieces, as well as an autographed photograph of Edwin Booth as Richelieu. The collection seems to have been a part of the extensive theatrical library of Mr. Edward Boltwood of Pittsfield, whose father was born in Amherst in 1839 and moved to Pittsfield in 1870. Mr. Boltwood, although an active member of the Berkshire bar, made the theatre his avocation and found time to write a number of small pieces for the stage, one of which is included in the present collection. He was also instrumental in establishing the William Parke Stock Company in Pittsfield, and continued his connection with this company by writing reviews of its plays. -

Lincoln asked Julia Dent Grant, the wife of General Grant “I suppose you’ll get to the White House yourself, don’t you?” • When Mrs. Grant told her she was happy where she was, Mrs. Lincoln replied “Oh, you better take it if you can get it!” • As a result of these actions, Mrs..
