Drawing upon extensive manuscript research, it focuses on the reign of Mary I (1553-1558), when the official return to Roman Catholicism was accompanied by the prosecution of Protestants for heresy, and the reign of Elizabeth I (1558-1603), when the state religion again shifted to Protestantism. I argue that the cognitive dissonance created by these seesaw changes of official doctrine necessitated a society in which religious mutability became standard operating procedure. For most early modern men and women it was impossible to navigate between the competing and contradictory dictates of Tudor religion and politics without conforming, dissimulating, or changing important points of conscience and belief. -

Abstract My thesis explores the way in which the Italian language and literary culture contributed to John Milton’s early development as a poet (over the period up to 1639 and the composition of Epitaphium Damonis). I begin by investigating the nature of the cultural relationship between England and Italy in the late medieval and early modern periods. I then examine how Milton’s own engagement with the Italian language and its literature evolved in the context of his family background, his personal contacts with the London Italian community and modern language teaching in the early seventeenth century as he grew to become a ‘multilingual’ poet. My study then turns to his first published collection of verse, Poems 1645. Here, I reconsider the Italian elements in Milton’s early poetry, beginning with the six poems he wrote in Italian, identifying their place and significance in the overall structure of the volume, and their status and place within the Italian Petrarchan verse tradition. -

Synopsis This thesis consists of a transcript and edition of Fynes Moryson's unpublished Itinerary c.1617 - 1625, with introduction, text, annotations, bibliography and index. Moryson was a gentleman traveller whose accounts of journeys undertaken in the 1590s across much of Europe as far as the Holy Land in the Ottoman Empire provide contemporary evidence of secular and religious institutions, ceremonies, customs, manners, and national characteristics. The first part of Moryson's Itinerary was published in 1617. Some of the second part was transcribed in 1903 by Charles Hughes as Shakespeare's Europe, but this is the first transcript and edition of the whole manuscript. The work has involved investigation of the historical, classical and geographical sources available to Moryson, of Elizabethan secretary hand, and of travel writing as a form of primitive anthropology. -

The mature limes and horse chestnuts provide a green island closely surrounded by housing, though the names of Honey Hill and Pound Green recall a more rural past. During the spring and early summer it is a colourful haven of wild flowers. This church has always been set in a poor neighbourhood and Castle End has a definite country feel to it. The domestic architecture, whether of the 17th century on either side of Northampton Street, or of more recent building in local style and materials in Honey Hill, all contribute to this rural atmosphere, unlike the grander buildings of the colleges in the centre of the city. In the middle years of the 20th century St Peter’s was known as the Children’s Church, and more recently it has been supported by a loyal band of friends and helpers who have cherished the tranquillity of this building – the smallest medieval church in Front cover: Exterior from the south-east Cambridge. -

Balliol College Lending Registers LibA6 and LibA7 Biographical Index of Borrowers Baron, John. As John Jones notes in Balliol College: A History, John Baron rose almost from the bottom of Oxford University to the top; he was admitted as a Servitor at Balliol in 1686, elected a Fellow in 1691, and became Master of the College in 1704. He also served as Vice Chancellor of the University between 1715 and 1718. Bernard, [Unknown]. No obvious Balliol match for a “Dr Bernard” has been identified. Blake, William. The only possible match Joseph Foster provides in his Alumni Oxonienses for a “Mr Blake” at Balliol in the 1670s is one William Blake, who matriculated in June 1676, aged 17. He was awarded a B.A. in 1680. Blinman, John. Foster notes that John Blinman matriculated in July 1678 aged 18. Bradford, John. John Bradford matriculated as a gentleman undergraduate in October 1697. He gained a B.A. in 1701 and an M.A. from 1704. He was a Fellow of the College from 1700 and was later rector of Black Torrington 1712-37. Brydges, William. William Brydges was admitted as a Fellow-Commoner to Balliol in 1701, and went on to study for the bar-at-law at Gray’s Inn. He was also a clerk at the Chancery from 1709-13. Letters exchanged between his tutor, John Baron, and his father, Francis Brydges (Balliol 1677), show that he became a studious scholar in his short time at Balliol, after what Jones describes as a “turbulent adolescence.” That a Fellow as senior as Baron was allocated to tutor Brydges might explain why he was permitted access to the library. -

THE ELIZABETHAN PROTESTANT PRESS: A STUDY OF THE PRINTING AND PUBLISHING OF PROTESTANT RELIGIOUS LITERATURE IN ENGLISH, EXCLUDING BIBLES AND LITURGIES, 1558-1603. By WILLIAN CALDERWOOD, M.A., B.D. Submitted for the Ph.D. degree, University College. (c\ (LONBI 2 ABSTRACT Uninterrupted for forty-five years, from 1558 to 1603, Protestants in England were able to use the printing press to disseminate Protestant ideology. It was a period long enough for Protestantism to root itself deeply in the life of the nation and to accumulate its own distinctive literature. English Protestantism, like an inf ant vulnerable to the whim of a parent under King Henry VIII, like a headstrong and erratic child in Edward's reign, and like a sulking, chastised youth in the Marian years, had come of age by the end of the Elizabethan period. At the outset of Elizabeth's reign the most pressing religious need was a clear, well-reasoned defence of the Church of England. The publication of Bishop Jewel's Apologia Ecclesiae Anglicanae in 1562 was a response to that need and set the tone of literary polemics for the rest of the period. It was a time of muscle- flexing for the Elizabethan Church, and especially in the opening decades, a time when anti-Catholicism was particularly vehement. Consistently throughout the period, when Queen and country were threatened by Catholic intrigues and conspiracies, literature of exceptional virulence was published against Catholicism. But just as the press became an effective tool for defenders and apologists of the Church of England, it soon was being used as an instrument to advance the cause of further reform by more radical Protestants. -

This paper looks at the educational milieu that produced his pioneering work, following him from his Wiltshire gentry background through school at Blandford Forum, Dorset, to Trinity College, Oxford, the Middle Temple, and beyond as a young gentleman with a scientific turn of mind in Commonwealth London. It substantially clarifies and revises previous estimates of the extent and nature of his education and offers a case study in the early training of a Restoration "virtuoso". Keywords: Antiquarianism, Education, Oxford, Rota, Science John Aubrey (1626-1697) is well-known for his contributions to the intellectual life of the early Royal Society, prehistoric archaeology in Britain, and other scientific and antiquarian disciplines.1 His education, however, has been comparatively neglected. Since Anthony Powell’s 1948 biography, there has been no full-scale study of the young Aubrey within his scholarly contexts.2 Historically, there existed a perception of Aubrey as a dilettante, an amateur with superficial knowledge of many subjects but who lacked the will, or the ability, to become master of any.3 While that tradition has been exploded by the work of Kate Bennett, Michael Hunter, Rhodri Lewis, and William Poole, more recent studies have focused on Aubrey's major scholarship, rather than its educational underpinnings.4 This paper explores those underpinnings by reconstructing his intellectual development up to his election to the Royal Society in 1663. -

Histories of criticism too often neglect critical identity, fastidiously tracing the development of such concepts as imitation yet taking for granted the idea of the critic as stable and transparent. This study complicates that idea by historicizing it in the very period when the word critic first began to signify an expert in literary judgment. Revising reductive assessments of this era of criticism as the sum of its classical parts, I argue that the idea of the critic in early modern England was negotiated in a discourse equally responsive to classical precedent and to the economic, political, and religious circumstances of a rapidly changing national landscape. Such pivotal moments as the erection of public theaters in London, the Marprelate controversy, the tide of anti-intellectualism rising from what Gabriel Harvey called “the world of business,” and the English chapter of the scientific revolution forced English critics from Sidney to Jonson to reevaluate the basis and scope of critical authority. -

Love’s Labour’s Lost: IV.2 VIDENCE of the literacy of the William Shakespeare of Stratford-upon- Avon is minimal. It is suggested that perhaps the so-called “hand D” in the play Sir Thomas More in the British Library is Shakespeare’s (Schoen- baum 214), while in 1949, McLaren suggested that the annotations in a 1551 Halle’s Chronicles were in Shakespeare’s hand (10). According to which scholar you read, he may or may not have attended petty school. According to Nicholas Rowe (1709), he attended a free school (Butler 7) which may or may not have been the grammar school and he may or may not have left at about age thirteen when his father was beginning to have some financial problems (Muir 1). According to Rowe, “the narrowness of his circumstances and the want of his assistance at Home forc’d his Father to withdraw him from thence.” Later scholars such as Park Honan see Shakespeare still at school aged fifteen (47). Views vary so widely, of course, because there are no records whatsoever that give place names or dates for his pre- sumed education nor do the records at Oxford and Cambridge mention him. -
