De oostelijke grens loopt over de rivier de Marowijne, de zuidelijke over het Tumuchumac- en het Acarai-gebergte en de westelijke over de rivier de Corantijn. Slechts ongeveer een derde deel van bovengenoemde opper- vlakte der Kolonie is doorreizigers bezocht; van het overige deel is niets bekend. 2°. Hoogte. Over eene geschatte breedte van 50 K. M. is het noorde- lijk deel van Suriname bijna geheel vlak en ligt het ter hoogte van het peil van gewoon hoog water en dus beneden het peil der springvloeden. Dit lage deel wordt ten Zuidenbegrensd door eene kromme lijn, loopende van de Marowijne ter hoogte van de Wane- 6 kreek in W. -

Reporting Organization Cultural Survival is an international Indigenous rights organization with a global Indigenous leadership and consultative status with ECOSOC since 2005. Cultural Survival is located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and is registered as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization in the United States. Cultural Survival monitors the protection of Indigenous Peoples’ rights in countries throughout the world and publishes its findings in its magazine, the Cultural Survival Quarterly, and on its website: www.cs.org. II. Introduction The nation of Japan has made some significant strides in addressing historical issues of marginalization and discrimination against the Ainu Peoples. However, Japan has not made the same effort to address such issues regarding the Ryukyu Peoples. Both Peoples have been subject to historical injustices such as suppression of cultural practices and language, removal from land, and discrimination. Today, Ainu individuals continue to suffer greater rates of discrimination, poverty and lower rates of academic success compared to non-Ainu Japanese citizens. Furthermore, the dialogue between the government of Japan and the Ainu Peoples continues to be lacking. The Ryukyu Peoples continue to not be recognized as Indigenous by the Japanese government and face the nonconsensual use of their traditional lands by the United States military. -

Sitting under an arbor, visitors listened to dignitaries interpret the meaning of the Long Walk, explain the four years ofimprisonment at the Bosque Redondo, and discuss the Navajos' return to their homeland in1868. Earlier that morn ing, a small gathering ofDine offered their prayers to the Holy People. l In the past twenty years, historic sites have become popular tourist attrac tions, partially as a result ofpartnerships between state historic preservation departments and the National Park Service. ACTIVITY REPORT 4.1.1 Activity: Meeting on land management and protection with Trio leaders Financed by: Organization of American States Focal group: The Trio indigenous community Execution: The Amazon Conservation Team (ACT); President: Mark Plotkin; ACT Suriname Program Director: Gwendolyn Emanuels-Smith Counterparts: the Trio indigenous communities Date: October 20, 2005 OBJECTIVE The objective of this activity was to develop a strategy for land protection and management for the Trio indigenous community. COORDINATION Activities were coordinated by the ACT Culture Coordinator Beverly de Vries. PARTICIPANTS Participants were the Trio Granman Asongo Alalaparu and his staff in the village of Kwamalasamutu. ACTIVITY REPORT On October 20, 2005, ACT staff convened a meeting with Granman Asongo. The meeting focused on land management and Trio plans for land use in the region. The Granman gave an overview of regional history. The trend in the 1970s was for the indigenous groups that were spread out in Suriname’s border regions to move to larger villages in the interest of centralized healthcare, education, and religious teachings. Kwamalasamutu became such a mega-village of people from all over the region. Recently, however, the people in these mega-villages have seen that trend subside. This change is likely due to several factors such as the increasing distance people have to travel to find ground suitable for their gardens. Likewise, there is an increasing scarcity of game and fish due to the strain on local resources from over-hunting. For the last few years there has been a gradual spread into the region. People accompanied by Kapiteins have set up villages in Alalaparu, Sipaliwini, Vier Gebroeders, Kuruni, Amotopo and Wanapan. -

Chapter The Contribution of Javanese Pharmacognosy to Suriname’s Traditional Medicinal Pharmacopeia: Part 1 Dennis R.A. Mans, Priscilla Friperson, Meryll Djotaroeno and Jennifer Pawirodihardjo Abstract The Republic of Suriname (South America) is among the culturally, ethnically, and religiously most diverse countries in the world. Suriname’s population of about 600,000 consists of peoples from all continents including the Javanese who arrived in the country between 1890 and 1939 as indentured laborers to work on sugar cane plantations. After expiration of their five-year contract, some Javanese returned to Indonesia while others migrated to The Netherlands (the former colonial master of both Suriname and Indonesia), but many settled in Suriname. Today, the Javanese community of about 80,000 has been integrated well in Suriname but has preserved many of their traditions and rituals. This holds true for their language, religion, cul- tural expressions, and forms of entertainment. The Javanese have also maintained their traditional medical practices that are based on Jamu. Jamu has its origin in the Mataram Kingdom era in ancient Java, some 1300 years ago, and is mostly based on a variety of plant species. The many Jamu products are called jamus. The first part of this chapter presents a brief background of Suriname, addresses the history of the Surinamese Javanese as well as some of the religious and cultural expressions of this group, focuses on Jamu, and comprehensively deals with four medicinal plants that are commonly used by the Javanese. The second part of this chapter continues with an equally extensive narrative of six more such plants and concludes with a few remarks on the contribution of Javanese jamus to Suriname’s traditional medicinal pharmacopeia. -
