Fluefamilien Canacidae (Diptera) eller skøjtefluer i Danmark af ERIK RALD (Witha summary: The family Canacidae in Denmark). Familien Canacidae (ofte, men mindre korrekt, stavet Canaceidae), er en lille familie af små acalyptrate fluer, af hvilken der for tiden er kendt 45 arter i hele verden fordelt på 7 slægter (Wirth, 1951, 1954, 1956, 1964, 1969, 1970; Griffiths, 1972). De forekommer næsten alle på havkyster, de fleste ved Stillehavets kyster, tre arter dog ved ferskvand på Hawaii og Java, Larverne til to arter fra Hawaii er kendt (Williams, 1938). I Nordeuropa findes to arter, hvoraf den ene nu er fundet i Danmark. Tidligere var familien ikke kendt fra Danmark, men den står opført på listen over de familier, som forekommer eller kunne tænkes at forekomme i Danmark (Lyneborg, 1960). Der findes ingen eksemplarer af arter tilhø rende denne familie i Zoologisk Museums samlinger. Den 18. august 1975 indsamlede jeg på Skallingen i Vestjylland et ek semplar af arten Xanthocanace ranula (Loew) ( = Dinomyia ranula (Loew)). Dyret blev taget på Skallingende ved nordbredden af den store sø, som står i forbindelse med Ho Bugt, en habitat, som må anses for meget typisk for arten (Brauns, 1959). Eksemplaret har muligvis været dødt ved ind samlingen, da det var i en ejendommelig forfatning; således manglede blandt andet det meste af sugesnabelen. Hos Brauns (1959: 591) findes et kort over artens udbredelse. Her er hele den jyske vestkyst prikket ind og samtidig forsynet med et spørgs målstegn. Der angives ingen konkrete fund fra Danmark, og det må for modes, at signaturen kan anses for at være en tydeliggørelse af Brauns' egne fund umiddelbart syd for grænsen. -

ABSTRACT BAYLESS, KEITH MOHR. Phylogenomic Studies of Evolutionary Radiations of Diptera. (Under the direction of Dr. Brian M. Wiegmann.) Efforts to understand the evolutionary history of flies have been obstructed by the lack of resolution in major radiations. Diptera is a highly diverse branch on the tree of life, but this diversity accrued at an uneven pace. Some of radiations that contributed disproportionately to species diversity occurred contemporaneously, and understanding the relationships of these taxa can illuminate broad scale patterns. Relationships between some subordinate groups of taxa are notoriously difficult to untangle, and genomic data will address these problems at a new scale. This project will focus on two major radiations in Diptera: Tabanus horse flies and relatives, and acalyptrate Schizophora. Tabanus includes over one thousand species. Synthesis focused research on the group is stymied by its species richness, worldwide distribution, inconsistent diagnosis, and scale of undescribed diversity. Furthermore, the genus may be non-monophyletic with respect to more than 10 other lineages of horse flies. A groundwork phylogenetic study of worldwide Tabanus is needed to understand the evolution of this lineage and to make comprehensive taxonomic projects manageable. Data to address this question was collected from two different sources. A dataset including five genes was sequenced from ninety-four species in the Tabanus group, including nearly all genera of Tabanini and at least one species from every biogeographic region. Then a new data source from a next generation sequencing approach, Anchored Hybrid Enrichment exome capture, was used to accumulate a dataset including hundreds of genes for a subset of the taxa. -

Thirteen species of Chloropidae are recorded from the Galápagos Islands, Ecuador. Seven new species are described: Diplotoxa loma sp. n. (subfamily Chloropinae); Conioscinella emphe- ria sp. n.; Gaurax gethosyne sp. n.; Hippelates alyscus sp. n.; Liohippelates baptipalpis sp. n.; Olcella anaclasta sp. n.; Olcella lupina sp. n. (subfamily Oscinellinae). Another species in the genus Apallates is apparently undescribed, but there is insufficient information to justify a for- mal description. Monochaetoscinella anonyma is recorded for the first time from the archi- pelago. Four species previously recorded from the archipelago were also identified: Cadrema pallida; Conioscinella galapagensis; Elachiptera cultrata; Liohippelates galapagensis. Previously published Galápagos records of Liohippelates pusio apparently refer to L. galapa- gensis. A key to the Galápagos species of Chloropidae is given. Geographic affinities of the Galápagos chloropid fauna are similar to those of other Diptera from the archipelago, with few pantropical species, some species also found in the northern Neotropical and southern Nearctic regions, and endemic species apparently with Neotropical sister groups. WIRTII BURtAU OF ENTOMOLOGY AND PLANT QUARANTINr:, AGRICULTURAL Rr:SF.ARCH ADMINISTRATION, UNITED STATr:S DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE INTRODUCTION While I was attempting to rearrange the material in the United States National Museum collections, I noted that several undescribed species were represented among the material from the Pacific which accumulated from collections made during and after World War II. Curran's 1934 key to the genera proved to be inadequate, and further examination of the literature revealed the genera to be so poorly char acterized as to make construction of a good generic key impossible. Furthermore, not a single key to species was discovered. In an effort to improve this situation, new generic diagnoses are here offered, new generic and specific keys are presented, 13 species are restudied and redescribed, and one genus and seven species are described as new to SCience. The Canaceidae is a small family, numbering 32 species in the present list, but it is well distributed around the world. Many aspects of its'distribution and ecology parallel those of the nematocerous sub family Clunioninae (family Tendipedidae). Both groups are aquatic and almost exclusively coastal in habitat, breeding preferably between tide levels on rocks covered with green algae such as Enteromorpha and Ulva. Gercke (4) 1 gives a few notes on the biology of Xantho canace ranula (Loew) in Europe, and Williams (12) gives an account of the life histories of two Hawaiian species. -

This issue is brought to you during the Covid-19 pandemic, with many of you likely cooped up at home, with insect collections worldwide closed for business! Perhaps for this reason this issue is pretty heavy, not just with articles but with images. There were many submissions to the Flies are Amazing! section and the Dipterists Lairs! I hope you enjoy them! Just to touch on an error I made in the Fall issue’s introduction… In outlining the change to “Spring” and “Fall” issues, instead of April and October issues, I said “But rest assured, I WILL NOT produce Fall issues after 20 December! Nor Spring issues after 20 March!” But of course I meant no Spring issues after 20 June! Instead of hitting the end of spring, I used the beginning. Oh well… Thank you to everyone for sending in such interesting articles!
