USC Aiken’s original mascot What is a Pacer? was “The Rebel” with the logo depicted as an old “Confederate Man”. But USCA quickly changed to “The Pacer” which more accu- rately symbolized the community. Aiken, SC is a prominent winter training ground for racehorses. Every March, the city hosts the “Aiken Triple Crown” with the Trials on the first weekend, the Steeplechase on the second weekend, and new in 2004, Polo on the final weekend. Pacers, and their cousins-- ously on the sulky with the crop, or Trotters, are horses bred and whip, in hand. A Pacer’s right front trained to race in harness or sulky and back leg hit the ground at the races. The driver sits precari- same time, alternating side to side.
