T: 01554 758171 e:[email protected] | www.stradeyparkhotel.com Mr Ian M. Smith Pastoral Letter Dear Friends, The Christian calendar year finished with Christ the King Sunday. To remind us that our Christmas story of a baby born in manger, to a young girl guided by an angel’s message, is not some soft snuggly night-time tale for little ones, but a very real message of salvation for ALL people of every race and background. As always, November was dominated by our Remembrance services and it is always a privilege be able to take these special services. The response from the people of Kidwelly is always so wonderful that St Mary’s is just about as full as can be each Remembrance Sunday. Now the lovely people from the British Legion are supporting us at Llandyfaelog as well, so that was a very different service this year that will grow in attendance as word gets around about the 2pm start. We now go from looking back in Remembrance to looking forward during Advent as we prepare for the coming of Emmanuel, “God With us”, born as a human babe with a manger for his bed. As well as our Remembrance services, November was special for us as our churches entered into the new LMA of Bro Cydweli which is made up of ten churches. St Mary’s is the main church and I am the LMA Dean. ▪ St. Mary, Kidwelly ▪ St. Teilo, Mynyddygarreg ▪ All Saints, Llansaint ▪ St. Maelog, Llandyfaelog ▪ St. Thomas, Ferryside ▪ St. Ishmael, St. Ishmaels ▪ St. Anne, Cwmffrwd ▪ St. Arthne, Llanarthne ▪ St. Twrog, Llanddarog ▪ St. Cyndeyrn, Llangyndeyrn The Christmas story tells of the long journey that Mary and Joseph had to make to Bethlehem. All the while Joseph must have been wondering if he had done the right thing by marrying a girl already expecting a baby that was not his. At the same time Mary would have been having a hard time travelling on the back of a donkey when she was so late in her pregnancy. When children are all dressed up for nativity plays for Advent, Christingle and Christmas events it is New & Second-Hand Scooters Bought & Sold inc. Mary and Joseph were real people facing real hardship and the possibility of being disowned by their families for doing God’s will. Nobody points the finger at anyone today for having children before they are married, but then it was totally unacceptable. If Joseph had publicly accused her of sleeping with another man when she was promised to him, Mary could have been stoned to death. We may think that we are going through difficult times as our congregations seem to dwindle and grow older with each passing year. We may think that being made to merge our churches into a single grouping called Bro Cydweli is not what you had hoped for, but it is not so great a challenge compared to the task God placed on Mary and Joseph. So, as we sing our wonderful songs of Advent and our joyful Christmas Carols let us also come closer together as a group of Christian people to work together for the betterment of all. Good Fellowship to you this Christmas. May God fill your hearts with love and surround you with friends and the care of loved ones. Let us move forward together caring for each other as Christ would have us do as his people. Let us be ready to share our time, our experience and our resources to make our LMA a place where our King can be greeted with joy and new followers can be found. A very merry Christmas and a spiritually prosperous New Year to you all! From your Priest-in-Charge and now, Dean of Bro Cydweli, Trevor St. Mary’s News Good news!!
