Dear Friends,

All the Harvest services went really well. Many thanks to everyone who dressed the churches and made them look so wonderful. Diolch yn fawr, to our organists who make our services possible through your playing for us. Thanks to our guest speakers and we were especially blessed with Revd. Helen’s presence at St Mary’s. The school children also did us proud coming into St Teilo’s and St Mary’s for Harvest services. All the food collected has been delivered to Llanelli Food Bank at Myrtle House.

November is another busy month, beginning with the wedding of Carwyn Evans and Zara Williams in St Mary’s Kidwelly on the feast of All Saints. Cerys will be playing our recently refurbished church organ with the new “Gedge Trumpet”, added in memory of David & Hazel Gedge, who did so much to raise awareness of the importance of the organ at St Mary’s Kidwelly and who also raised a lot of money through recitals for the organ to be restored in this way.

This is followed quickly by the inauguration of Bro Cydweli LMA on 6th November. The service will begin at 7pm. Reverend William Lambert, Reverend Heidi De Gruchy, Canon Dewi Roberts and I will lead the ministry team, which will also include Readers and Worship Leaders from all the ten churches in the newly established LMA of Bro Cydweli. Bishop Joanna and Archdeacon Dorrien Davies will lead us through the inauguration service.

We will not get much time to ponder what it is like to be “Bro Cydweli” because we shall be focussing on Remembrance Sunday and the Armistice services. This change from what we have always been to this new LMA is not easy for any of us, but maybe we should be mindful of how much harder things were for those who lived and died in both world wars and in some of the periods in between and even in the time of scarcity and rationing that remained for a long time after 1945. It could be that the services of Remembrance will help us to put our current situation into perspective and help us to be less anxious about how we move forward as this new church group. So, let us put our trust in the Lord. Let us turn to Christ and to each other for support, guidance, help and a kind word when things seem a bit strange, or aren’t as they always have been. There is a continuing budget deficit so unable to make the September Ministry Share payment. Urgent short and long term financial planning is needed. Direct Giving is working well as we have a consistent regular monthly income and this system eases the Treasurer’s workload. It would be good to have more people using this system. The Wardens will be happy to explain how this works.

The organ at St.Mary’s is now fully restored. Ceris Harries, church organist, is to attend a six-session course for organists run by the Royal School of Church Music.

Need to continue fund raising for both the Parish Room improvements and church in general. Future events will be a concert by Band on Saturday, November 9th and by Swansea Excelsior Ladies’ Choir with the children from Ysgol Gwenllian on Monday, December 9th.

Faculties need to be applied for to replace heaters in St. Teilo and for electrical work in St. Mary’s.

A big thank you to Nevin for work on the donations box which is now ultra secure.

With support from the PCC, the Revd. Trevor is to write to the Archdeacon delaying the inauguration of the LMA.

The Parish Magazine annual subscription is to be raised to £5 for 2020.

Fundraising News Don’t Miss! In St. Mary’s church there will be a concert by Burry Port Band on Saturday, November 9th ~ and by Swansea Excelsior Ladies’ Choir with the children from Ysgol Gwenllian on Monday, December 9th.

The Thomas Warne Organ 1762

Work on St Mary’s Organ has now been completed and the organ sounds wonderful. Some of you may have wondered what has been going on and why work needed to be done on the organ? We have been very lucky to have been given the services of Paul Hale, the organist emeritus of Southwell Minster and a highly respected organ consultant, to assess and design the upgrade of the organ. Paul has done this free of charge as a memorial to David and Hazel Gedge. Paul spent many hours, on his visits to Kidwelly, discussing with David what work they would like to do to the organ and, having given recitals on the organ, was well acquainted with its strengths but also its shortcomings, so ‘It’s a devil to start on was well qualified to honour David’s wishes. these damp November Sunday mornings - The Organ is an important part of church luckily we have a worship and should never be seen as “off limits”; sidesperson who with this in mind, we would like to invite works for the AA’ pianists and budding organists to use the organ

for practice. Anyone who would like this opportunity should contact Revd.Trevor Copeland.

Below Paul has written a short piece to explain what has been done.

“The fine organ in St Mary’s was last worked on as long ago as 1976, when Percy Daniel & Co (of Clevedon) restored it. They did an excellent job, though as funds were limited, some ranks of pipes were removed rather than being restored. Hazel and David Gedge were determined to improve the organ once the funds could be found, so over many years they held a summer organ recital series which gradually augmented the organ fund. After Hazel’s death it was realised that sufficient money had been raised to add a rank of Trumpet pipes to the organ in their memory, and to undertake a partial cleaning – there was forty years of dust and dirt sitting inside the organ after all! The successors to Percy Daniel (a firm on which David & Hazel were very keen), Clevedon Organs, quoted for adding the missing Trumpet stop (a rank of 56 pipes, the longest 8ft in length), along with an additional stop-knob for it, and for carrying out the cleaning. Whilst doing the work during September 2019 they discovered that the mechanism for a further rank of pipes still existed, so permission was granted for a further addition of 56 vintage pipes to enhance the sounds available to the organist. The stop called ‘Twelfth’ which was one rank of pipes, is now called ‘Sesquialtera’ and has two ranks of pipes; its stop-knob has been re-engraved. The organ has thus been augmented by 112 pipes (bringing the grand total of pipes to no less than 1,212). Organists will enjoy using the new stops and the organ will sound more colourful and more powerful to the congregation, as well as being able to play Trumpet solos. I’m quite certain that Hazel and David would have been delighted, especially as there are still sufficient funds to ensure the organ is tuned and maintained.”

Our meeting in November will be on Wednesday 11th at 7.00pm when Canon Bryan Witt will be our guest speaker. 1884 TERRIFIC THUNDERSTORM AT KIDWELLY THE PARISH CHURCH WRECKED

Article , now spotted with age, sellotaped into the front of an old St. Mary’s minute book of the PCC.

A violent gale raged here during the whole of Thursday night, culminating about half past two o’clock, in a terrific thunderstorm, accompanied by hail and rain. The peals of thunder, which awakened all the inhabitants, seemed almost to paralyse the strongest nerves, and it was instinctively felt that something serious must have happened. About this time the top of the grand old steeple of the parish church was struck by a thunderbolt, it is believed, and the massive masonry was wrecked to the extent of some 20 or 30 feet and some portions of it hurled a distance of about 300 yards. The damage to the church itself must be very considerable, for the seats &c. were literally smashed to matchwood by the falling debris, and the roof on the north-west side, being completely riddled all the way to the chancel, presents a sorry appearance to those who venture on that side of the graveyard – for it is hardly safe to do so, as a portion of the steeple not removed appears quite loose, and must carry destruction with it when it falls.

The inmates of some of the houses in Lady-street and Causeway-street were naturally much affrighted when huge stones came, they knew not whither, crashing through the roofs. In a house in Causeway-street, occupied by Mr Joseph Edwards, a stone measuring twelve inches long, and weighing about thirty pounds, came with tremendous force and noise through the roof and ceiling into one of the rooms, where two men were asleep, making indentations in the wall, smashing a chair, and striking one of the men slightly on the arm, but, happily, so slightly as not to injure him. A man who slept in another room of the same house was startled by he hardly knew what, and in a moment a stone came crashing through the ceiling, and completely wrecked the bed. The escape of this person was even more marvellous than that of those just mentioned. He stated that he instantly jumped out of bed, and groped his way to what he found was the window, and thinking the best thing he could do was to get out of the room THE RED LION LLANDYFAELOG

as fast as possible, tried to find the door which, when he reached it was blocked by the debris. The roofs of several other houses were damaged, and all by the debris of the church steeple. The portion of the steeple that found its way into Causeway-street and the adjacent gardens, must have been carried over the Town-hall, which escaped all damage excepting a smashed window. The church clock stopped at 2.45, thus indicating the time of the occurrence, and one of the dials of the clock is now a foot lower than before the morning of the 22nd.

It is almost needless to say that the church looks quite disfigured now that the top of the steeple is gone. It is not known whether the steeple will be rebuilt to its former height, or lopped off still more, but certain it is that the inhabitants looked with pride on its lofty spire, which was considered one of the finest in the principality, its height being about 180 feet. But the question of more immediate importance is the removing of the portion of the steeple which, as already stated, is loose. Fortunately, it is likely to fall on the side where it would do the least possible damage and harm. The previous month’s Harvest Happily, there was no loss of life or Festival donation from the injury to limb. That this is the case is Genetic Modification research perfectly marvellous, and the people of laboratory was proving to be a the town in sight of the debris scattered useful stop-gap until the on the streets shrink from contemplating steeple restoration fund what “might have been,” had this reached its target. occurrence taken place in the day-time.

The aid of the coastguardsmen of Burry Port has been sought, and it is hoped the loose portion of the steeple may be removed by means of the rocket apparatus.

Messy Church and Sunday School.

The story at September’s Messy Church was about Jesus welcoming the children - Mark 10: 13-16 and the theme was ‘Listening and learning’. We looked at how we are told to come to Jesus like a child. Why not join us to explore the Bible in a fun, friendly way? Messy Church in November will be on Sunday, 24th starting at 3pm in Trinity Methodist Church Hall. This will be our Christmas celebration. The next Messy Church will be on 26th January, 2020. We will be fundraising for Messy Church and Sunday School with a stall at Gwenllian Hall on Saturday, 16th November, selling wonderful crafts made by the children and helpers and the Knit & Natter group of Kidwelly - all at pocket money prices! We will also be having a Silent Auction for some beautiful donated artwork. Please support us to keep Messy Church free.

The annual raffle draw which took place during the church’s harvest supper on the 4th of October 2019, was a great success with the result totalling £1,083.00. The Friends committee extend their appreciation to everyone who contributed towards this outcome. With thanks for financing the printing of the raffle books, donating the prizes, selling and purchasing the tickets. At our October meeting the chairman, Mr. Ieuan Hughes, reported how rewarding it is to receive such support for our fund raising activities, and that it would be most pleasing to welcome additional friends. The annual membership subscriptions are vital to sustain our objectives. Our next meeting will be in the New Year on Wednesday 29th of January 2020.

In our October meeting we heard that a few of our members were not well, so we hope they have picked up and are feeling better. Best Wishes to members with birthdays this month. We had a lovely trip in September to Cosheston Garden Centre, where we enjoyed coffee and toast in the café before having a walk round. A nicely set out centre and well maintained. Many of us came away with plants and garden ornaments. We then went on to Saundersfoot for lunch and the afternoon, which was warm, enabled us to sit and enjoy the sun and ice creams. Our speaker was Quita Davies from Trading Standards, accompanied by Sandra, and two PCSOs, Trudy and Ffion. Quita gave examples of scams and frauds which are frequently aimed at the elderly. Cold callers who knock on doors offering to renew drives or paint houses and then charge extortionate prices, even driving victims to the bank to draw out cash. Postal scams which state you have won a prize or saying you are in with a chance of winning thousands of pounds but need to buy something to enable you to be put in the draw. Once you reply, you are put on what is unfortunately called a ‘sucker’ list, which then alerts other scammers you are an easy touch. One lady was found with a room full of items not needed, purchased at a cost of literally thousands. Trading Standards are now training Royal Mail staff to spot if people are receiving too many parcels and might be being scammed. Sometimes scammers have leaflets printed with services offered, like home maintenance, but they only include a mobile number so there is no way of knowing where they come from. There is now a government scheme which is called ‘Buy with confidence’, which has a list of reputable names. This can be obtained by phoning the County Council. Phone scams are always being updated; they have latched on to Thomas Cook and are saying they can refund you and ask for your bank details. NEVER give bank or personal details over the phone. If in doubt find your bank phone number yourself, not one that has been given to you by them, and ring the bank. Unfortunately, many people who are scammed are lonely, don’t have daily contact with anyone, and like to receive mail or phone calls. This leads us into another area entirely. Don’t put off that phone call or note! Our next meeting will be on 6th November, 2pm at the Rugby Club.

At the recent A.G.M. of the above committee the presiding chairman Mr. Ieuan Hughes stood down and resigned wholly as a member of the committee, on which he had served for over 12 years, having been appointed chairman for the last 6 years. During this time he acknowledges the opportunities afforded to him in enabling the visits to present numerous cheques from the appeal fund to so many cancer treatment centres. The new chairman of the Ail Gyfle Cancer Committee is Mr. Gethin Davies, Mrs. Janice Davies continues as secretary, and Mrs. Nesta Thomas as treasurer. Mr. Mansel Thomas was elected as President.

The Christmas Coffee Morning of the above committee will be on Thursday 28th November 2019 at 10.30am in the Rugby Club, Kidwelly.

On a personal note Ieuan states “I wish to express my sincere appreciation for the support I have received from the communities of Cydweli and Mynyddygarreg in relation to fund raising events for Ail Gyfle. The generosity, sponsorship and commitment of you all have resulted in substantial monies raised and already have been donated to various cancer units throughout South Wales, thus amounting to almost £85,000.00. The past year has been difficult for me with the loss of my great friend, Derek Dalton, who would always be a pillar of strength for me in my aims for the organizations I served. Also due to family health problems I have reluctantly decided to reduce my community commitments, to devote more time for family needs. I wish Ail Gyfle every success for future events, and that the support from the community will continue for all fund raising ventures. There is such a lot to share this month that I don’t know where to begin. October saw us celebrating harvest with a fine display of fruit and veg. Mary Stanfield had also made a Harvest Sheaf which was admired by all (such a clever woman our Mary. She can turn her hand to anything!). We have had increase in numbers in both Mynydd-y-Garreg and Lanelli with visits from Social Workers, Clinical Psychologists, Occupational Therapy students and an Occupational Therapy Technician, all of whom have shown great interest in the work of Ty-Golau and will hopefully refer people to us in the future. We also had a visit from Therapy Dogs on a Thursday afternoon which was a great success with lots of stroking and cuddling being evidenced. Mary and myself started our first Sunday afternoon outreach session in Penygroes and (although nervous initially) we were delighted with the feedback we received from the good crowd present. These sessions will continue once monthly and we are hoping that someone can be trained to take Ty-Golau into Penygroes in the future. On 12th September we attended the 50+ event in the National Botanic Gardens of Wales and manned a table on which information, photographs, posters and flyers were displayed. We were able to talk to many people, introduced Ty- Golau and received positive feedback as to the work we are doing. On Thursday 24th October we have been asked to give a presentation at Waterfront Museum in Swansea at the ‘Making changes in the community’ event which is being organised by the team of the Older People’s Commissioner for Wales. We are delighted that Ty-Golau is recognised as “an example of good practice” On the evening of the same day, we give our ‘War Years’ session at the meeting of the local branch of the W.I. So much to do, so little time! Janet Lewis ( Manager).

Over 50's Club. Our chairperson, Mrs. Jean Fox, opened the October meeting with the Lord's Prayer. Get well messages and birthday greetings were announced. The raffle was won by Dorothy Hughes, and the bingo won by Carol Smith. A delightful afternoon was spent with our guest speaker, Pat Evans, giving a talk on food preserving in general, and disclosing some useful tips she had learnt from her grandmother in the art of jam and chutney making. Horeb Chapel / Capel Horeb held their Harvest Thanksgiving Service on Tuesday 8th October at 7.00pm, the guest preacher being the Rev. Eirian Wyn Lewis of Mynachlog-ddu. Rev.Eirian Wyn led a beautiful service and gave the most interesting of sermons. He also spoke of how, this month, he is celebrating 40 years in the Baptist ministry, being only the fourth Minister of Horeb, Maenclochog since opening in 1870. He is also Minister of Bethel, Mynachlog- Ddu. He is about to embark on his eleventh visit to Patagonia, a country and people very dear to his heart.

Sympathy is extended to the family of the late Mr David Phillips, Burry Port, formerly of Upper Mill, who passed away last month. The funeral was held at St Mary's Church, Cydweli, with the Revd. Trevor Copeland officiating.

Harvest Thanksgiving Services at Sant Teilo saw Ysgol Mynyddygarreg visit in the afternoon when they presented their own service with Hymns and Prayers and Rev. Copeland giving the address. A collection was taken and once again, the money goes to the Luhimba Project, Tanzania, which the school supports generously. The evening service was very well attended and the guest preacher was the Venerable Dennis Wight. Organist in the absence of Jean Peace, who was attending the wedding of her grandson in Germany, was Ceris Harries, as always, very willing to step in. Diolch yn fawr i ti Ceris, i ni gyd yn Sant Teilo yn gwerthfawrogi dy gefnogaeth bob amser. This was followed by the Harvest Supper prepared by members; a delicious meal with an array of fresh puddings. The Vicar said in his sermon the next Sunday how versatile our little Church is in that it can accommodate such an event, and the joy and fun in eating together in the Church makes it a true Harvest supper in sharing our food, and of course, a thank you to everyone who donated and prepared this food so willingly. St Teilo members and friends are once again collecting for the Food Bank at Myrtle House, Llanelli, and should you wish to donate any items of food or toiletries, the appeal will remain open for the rest of the month. Diolch yn fawr.

Sant Teilo's Christmas Carol service will take place on Sunday 8th December at 7.00pm. This will be followed by Mince Pies and Mulled Wine. A collection will be taken in aid of Church Funds. Lifting the baton and in charge of the evening will be Ioan Hefin, with Jean Peace at the organ. Guest artistes will be 'Only Mynydd Aloud '. We look forward to your company.
